The Angra do Heroísmo Museum presents Oasis by
Nuno Sá | Wildlife Photography at the New Bedford
Whaling Museum
The MUSEU DE ANGRA DO HEROÍSMO presents the exhibition Oasis by Nuno Sá | Wildlife Photography, at New Bedford Whaling Museum, from January to June 2016, within the
partnership with that North-American institution, aiming to narrow the bonds between the
Azores Islands and the USA east coast community.
The exhibition displays 24 large print underwater photos that show the splendor, the
oddness and the beauty of the multiple creatures that live in the vastness of the Azorean sea
and turn it into an unexpected oasis, known
just by a few.
This exhibition, which was held at MAH
Sala do Capítulo and at Fórum Terceira from
June to October 2014, was deposited at the
Museu de Angra do Heroísmo, that has assured its itinerancy through the archipelago and
also across borders, in the understanding that
its documentary and artistic value is a great
mean for the Azores touristic promotion.
With its opening scheduled for January 7th,
counting with the presence of the author, Nuno
Sá, a photographer from Madeira Island and
the director of Museu de Angra do Heroísmo,
Jorge A. Paulus Bruno, this exhibition reasserts the maritime connection of two communities
that are part of whaling history. In fact, a lot of
Azoreans were engaged as crew in the North-American factory boats that sailed to Azores in
the 18th and 19th centuries searching for those
who Melville faced as “the best whale hunters”.
As a way to pay a tribute to the role of the
Portuguese and over all the Azorean in the
whaling industry, the New Bedford promotes
also a mini-marathon, within the celebration of
the Moby Dick public reading 20th anniversary
in which will be presented the Portuguese version of this book, with the participation of the
director of Museu de Angra do Heroísmo.
