Eco labelling: Promoting sustainable fisheries and
aquaculture – Friend of the sea certification of Sri
Lanka seafood
“Friend of the Sea is a non-profit nongovernmental organization (NGO) for the
conservation of marine habitat by means of certification and promotion of
sustainable seafood and products from sustainable fisheries and
aquaculture.Friend of the Sea originates from the Earth Island Institute’s
Dolphin-Safe Project – the precursor of all sustainable seafood certification
schemes. The Dolphin-Safe Project has saved millions of dolphins from
getting killed by the tuna fishery in the Eastern Tropical Pacific.
Friend of the Sea is one of the main sustainable seafood certification schemes
and the only one which certifies, with the same seal of approval, products
both farmed and wild-caught. This approach has allowed Friend of the Sea
project to grow fast and gather enthusiasm. More than 100 companies from
all over the globe participate to the project, including some of the main
producers, such as Stolt Sea Farms, Calvo, Norway Prawns, Panapesca, Clean
Seas, Omega Proteins and also traditional small scale fleets and farms. The
Sri Lanka yellowfin tuna fishery using bottom set multi-hooks as been
approved. Several Sri Lanka producers have joined Friend of the Sea.
Sustainable products and their origins are audited onsite, by internationally
accredited certification bodies (Aqua, Bureau Veritas, FCI, SGS), against
Friend of the Sea criteria.
Friend of the Sea follows the FAO – Guidelines for the Eco-labeling of Fish and
Fishery Products from Marine Capture Fisheries. In particular, Friend of the
Sea Criteria fulfil also Art 30 of the Guidelines, allowing certification only of
products from not overexploited stocks.
Products from all the main commercial species have been certified Friend of
the Sea. Among these: anchovies, caviar, cockles, cod, halibut, kingfish,

lobster, mackerel, mussels, salmon, sardines, shrimps and tuna. Friend of the
Sea also certified fish meal, fish oil, fish-feed and Omega-3 supplements
Certification criteria for products from fisheries require that the target stock
be not overexploited; the fishing method must not generate more than 8%
discards and must not by- catch endangered species; fishing gear cannot
impact the seabed; fishery must be compliant with all regulations, including
Total Allowable Catches, minimum size, mesh size, etc.
Friend of the Sea certification criteria for products from aquaculture
production have been recognized by the EU as being equivalent to the EU Bio
aquaculture requirements.
Friend of the Sea has deployed a network of onsite monitors which
continuously verify the sustainable origin of the certified products. Monitors in
Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Philippines constantly monitor the fisheries, vessels,
harbours, warehouses and processing sites. The program is rapidly expanding
to other areas such as Africa and South America.
Friend of the Sea is the only scheme of its kind to ensure full time on site
origin verification, providing further guarantee for retailers and consumers.
The onsite origin verification is complemented by transparency agreements
with some of the main cargo carriers worldwide.”
