West Middle School Student
Wins County Spelling Bee
On March 11th, Dylan Olster
was crowned champion of the
Scripps Broward County Spelling
Bee. Dylan spelled the word
“suffragette” to win and earn his
ticket to Washington DC in May
for the National Scripps Spelling
Bee.
There were over 150 students
representing all schools in the
county, and after a written test,
27 finalists took to the stage to
battle it out. After
approximately 25 rounds and
over 400 words spelled, only
three contestants remained.
Each student had a chance to
win the championship at least
once, but Dylan came out the
winner in the end.
Congratulations Dylan!!

Central Band News
The Central Middle Advanced
band attended the Florida
Bandmaster’s Annual Evaluations
at Hollywood Hills High School.
Under the exceptional direction of
the 2014 Teacher of the Year,
Mrs. Edie Shendell-Frankel, the
band was awarded a Superior
rating for the 12th consecutive
year! This is the highest rating a
middle school band can earn. We
are so proud of the students’
dedication and work over the past
three years in the Central Campus
Band Program. The band parents
are to be commended for their
support and dedication to the
program, without which this
program’s success would not be
possible. Go JAGS!!!

“It Starts With You” Tour
Anti-Bully Project
The Central and West Middle
Schools were selected by Disney
Club Penguin, in partnership with
Free the Children, to participate in a
special anti-bullying project, It
Starts With You tour. Both
schools were invited to have their
students participate in a schoolwide multi-media presentation on
April 10, 2014. Additionally, 15
student ambassadors were selected
from each campus as
representatives to participate in a 3
hour interactive workshop and
action planning session towards
combatting bullying. In addition, the
teachers will receive bullying
prevention curriculum resources.
This is a wonderful opportunity for
our middle school students and
teachers. This program is a $2000
value being offered to the school
through a Club Penguin grant. We
are grateful and thrilled to have
been selected, as this program is
aligned to the school’s existing AntiBullying Initiative, operating via the
school’s Connection and Bullying
Academy programs; these
presentations and student trainings
will help to support the school’s
program goal to continue to ensure
a bully-free school!
