LISBON WAS CONCEIVED AS A RECREATION OF
THE MEMORY OF THE 18TH CENTURY LISBON, OF ALL THE AREA
ALTERED BY THE EARTHQUAKE, THE TSUNAMI, THE FIRE AND
THE REBUILDING PLAN.
 SECOND LIFE®/OPENSIMULATOR TECHNOLOGY WAS THE
CHOSEN DIGITAL TOOL.
 THE PROJECT IS A RESULT OF COLLABORATIVE WORK BETWEEN
THE CENTRE FOR HISTORY OF ART AND ARTISTIC RESEARCH
(CHAIA), OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ÉVORA, AND THE COMPANY
BETA TECHNOLOGIES.

WHY LISBON?
• ON
1ST NOVEMBER 1755 LISBON SUFFERED A MAJOR EARTHQUAKE THAT PROFOUNDLY CHANGED THE
COURSE OF THE CITY’S DEVELOPMENT AND HISTORY.
• RESEARCHERS OF THE HISTORY OF LISBON PRIOR TO THE 1755 EARTHQUAKE WERE ALWAYS CONFRONTED
WITH THE SAME PROBLEM:
 THE INSUFFICIENCY OF DOCUMENTARY SOURCES;
 THE LACK OF URBAN AND ARCHITECTURAL REMAINS - WHAT WAS NOT DESTROYED BY THE EARTHQUAKE,
THE TSUNAMI AND THE FIRE, DISAPPEARED WITH THE RECONSTRUCTION OR WAS ASSIMILATED BY IT.
• ON ITS RUINS, A RETICULAR, REGULAR PLAN GAVE SHAPE TO A NEW CITY.

WHY LISBON?
• DECADES OF RESEARCH PROVIDED A SUBSTANTIAL BODY OF INFORMATION FOR THE STUDY OF LISBON.
• YET, A GLOBAL VISION OF THE CITY WAS STILL MISSING.
• IT WAS THUS CRUCIAL TO CARRY OUT A SWIFT AND RELIABLE COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ALL THE EXISTENT
PICTORIAL, ON PRE-EARTHQUAKE LISBON.
• DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY PROVIDED THE NECESSARY TOOLS.

THE PROJECT
 THE
SCOPE OF THE PROJECT IS QUITE AMBITIOUS: OUR AIM IS TO RECREATE THE SPATIAL, ARCHITECTURAL, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL
ASPECTS OF EARLY 18TH CENTURY LISBON.
 THEREFORE, IT WILL INCLUDE:
 THE URBAN DESIGN AND THE ARCHITECTONIC FABRIC OF THE WHOLE AREA.
 THE INTERIORS OF SOME OF THE MOST NOTEWORTHY BUILDINGS.
 AUDIO AND ANIMATION COMPONENTS IN ORDER TO PROVIDE THE BACKGROUND
OPERA PERFORMANCES AND OTHER SIGNIFICANT LISBON EVENTS OF THE TIME.

RECREATION OF A LOST URBAN REALITY WHOSE STUDY HAS UNTIL NOW RELIED ONLY ON
NARRATIVE DOCUMENTS AND TWO-DIMENSIONAL DATA, SUCH AS MAPS, DRAWINGS AND
ENGRAVINGS.
• CROSSING
THE CONCEPTUAL AND PHYSICAL BOUNDARIES OF THE TRADITIONAL MUSEUM,
THE LOST CITY CAN NOW BE SEEN AND VISITED AS A VIRTUAL REALITY.
• THE MEMORY OF
A CITY THUS BECOMES A PARTICULAR AND GENUINE EXPERIENCE WHICH
BROADENS THE METHODOLOGICAL AND EPISTEMOLOGICAL CONTEXTS OF HISTORICAL
RESEARCH.
