JORGE SANTOS Autumn House began by being a scrapbook with magazine clippings and photographs taken by the artist. After filling all the pages of the book, Jorge Santos felt that the project was still incomplete. He then decides to make another version, in slideshow, and exhibit it in a double projection format. This work would reveal itself decisive in his artistic production, because it closed his painting period and opened the beginning of his luminic research work. What was physical in the pictorial surface became ethereal in light association with the projected image. This is also a determinant moment in his artistic growth because it is also the beginning of a dialogue with the space where the work is to be exhibited. In Autumn House, this relationship, which would later become a structuring element in his work, obtains a special prominence. Just as the title unveils, Autumn House focuses on the idea of house, or at least on an established idea of what a house should be. Let us recall here that many of the images are clippings from interior decoration magazines. The sequence of projected images leads the observer to wander around a certain space, to walk through it infinitely. This becomes a kind of place without place, for it only exists in the crossing of photographed reality and the observer imagination, and is thus transformed into an essential element for the construction of the work of art. He/she is asked to draw out meanings from what he/she sees. The narrative dimension is also crucial for the dynamics of Autumn House. The concept of the work installation as a scenic device evokes a cinematographic experience in which narrative is structure (the work itself uses in its construction the cinematographic language and, implicitly, narrative) This is a work on memory, on the visualisation of memory and fiction. The images gathered by the author, the experiences they stand for as symbols, fixate on a both individual and collective memory. The house shown in the work stands on a crossway between the author personal memories and their fiction (by the intersection with images of “perfect houses”). This autobiographical feature is condensed in the occasional appearance of the silhouette of the artist himself. The collective memory dimension emerges when Jorge Santos incites in the spectator a comparative movement between his/her own house and the work’s fiction house.
