This is survey talk on Monge’s mass transportation theory and Kantorovich relaxation and their relationship with Aubry–
Mather theory. Me make special emphasis on the finite dimensional formulation of Kantorovich optimal plans. The dual
formulation in the continuous offers a route towards Mather theory.
