He is the son of that Angola of Sunday dandies
– the day of the week when men used to get
all dressed up. At just 5 years of age, he wore
his first tailor-made suit. With scissors in hand,
he began to cut through the world of fashion
design until he reached London, where
he weaved the project Art Comes First.

Art Comes First é o projecto fundado pelo angolano Sam
Lambert e pelo britânico Shaka Maidoh

‘A
Arte é a mãe de todas as coisas”, porque faz parte da natureza humana
criar, face às necessidades. E Sam
Lambert cria peças de vestuário, porque todos precisam de se vestir, e alguns de se vestir bem.
Com raízes na província angolana de Uíge, Sam começou o seu percurso internacional em Luanda,
onde partilhou a infância com a máquina de costura
do pai, alfaiate à moda antiga, e cresceu a talhar
tecido. Passou por Portugal e Espanha, antes de
dar os primeiros cortes no universo da alfaiataria moderna. Apaixonou-se pela estética vintage,
e começou a costurar o seu guarda-roupa personalizado, recriando-o à sua medida. Comprou um
livro de moldes-padrão e decorou os princípios
básicos do design.
Com o sangue de alfaiate talhado nas veias, rumou
à Suécia – morada da sua loja ‘Solo y Único’ durante cinco anos. Mas Londres viria a ser a sua última paragem – para já. Sam mudou-se de malas e
tecidos para a capital inglesa, onde começou oficialmente a costurar a sua carreira como designer de moda. O seu talento foi adoptado pela The
Savile Row Co., situada na rua com o mesmo nome,
a ‘royal mile’ da alfaiataria inglesa: “Acrescentei
cor e um estilo diferente aos seus tecidos clássicos. A marca estava familiarizada com os tecidos,
mas não com o estilo. Primeiro aprendemos as regras, só depois podemos quebrá-las”.
Elegante ao seu gosto ecléctico, Sam nomeia o
seu estilo de ‘sArt core’. Tudo começa com a escolha de um chapéu e de um par de sapatos – e o
conjunto ganha vida com pequenos pormenores,
como um lenço na lapela, uns suspensórios ou uma
gravata padronizada. Juntos, constroem a estética de um dandy dos anos 60.

rt is the mother of all things’ because it’s
part of the human nature to create things,
in order to meet our deeper needs. And Sam
Lambert creates clothing because everyone needs to wear clothes, and some feel
the need to dress especially well.
With his roots in the Angolan province of Uíge, Sam’s first
steps towards an international career began in Luanda,
where he spent much of his childhood with the sewing
machine that belonged to his father, an old time tailor.
He grew up cutting cloth. He passed through Portugal
and Spain before putting his scissors to work in the world
of high-end suit making. Falling in love with the vintage
look he then began to sew his own, personalised wardrobe, creating it solely to suit himself. He later bought
a book about pattern-cutting and memorised the basic
principles of design.
With the blood of a tailor stitched into his soul, he wandered off to Sweden where he opened and ran his own
shop, ‘Solo y Único’ for five years. But London would be
his next stop – so far. He packed up his bag and moved
to the English capital, where he began to officially piece
together his career as a fashion designer. His talent was
adopted by The Savile Row Co., on the street that shares
its name, the ‘royal mile’ of English tailoring: ‘I added color and a slight design twist to their classic fabrics; the
fabric was familiar to them, the twist was not. First you
have to learn the rules; only then can you break them.’
Elegant within his eclectic style which Sam himself calls
‘sArt core’. Everything starts with the choice of a hat and
a pair of shoes – and the outfit begins to take shape with
small details such as the handkerchief in the pocket, suspenders or a patterned tie. All together they epitomise
the aesthetics of the 1960s’ dandy.

The man behind the designer is inspired by the culture
all around him, by the people he passes by in the street.
‘I get a lot from other people, and the best way to give
back is through my designs.’ The ephemeral nature of
fashion fascinates him. ‘You have to create a personal
trend that might be taken up by the world.’
Sam Lambert is the creative half of an artistic clockwork orange called Art Comes First. The other half is
his workshop mate, Shaka Maidoh. The mutual admiration of these two contemporary dandies for the tradition of the art and the craft of manufacturing, led them
in 2008 to begin a project. Art Comes First is more than
a brand – it’s an artistic community, a family of creative
tailors. The group defines itself by the words “sartorial”
– the tailoring tradition that they intend to keep alive;
“alchemy” – the transmutation of different forms of art
that come together; and “progression” – the desire to
keep on evolving artistically.
The latest men’s collection by Art Comes First carries
the name ‘Avec Ces Frères’ on the label. Sam Lambert
and Shaka Maidoh, as creatives ‘who live from their suitcases’ designed a line that’s sophisticated, yet minimalist for the modern, adventuresome tourist. ‘Created by
travellers, for travellers’, Avec Ces Frères has travelled
the world within the bags of these two designers, with
exhibitions in Florence, Paris, New York and Las Vegas.
Soon to come, Art Comes First is preparing two new projects – ‘Bleed for Tweed’ and ‘Rude Boy to Roots Boy’.
In the meantime, before Art comes the Artist.

O homem por trás do designer inspira-se na cultura que o envolve, nas pessoas com quem se cruza
na rua: “Recebo muito dos outros, e a melhor forma de o devolver é através dos meus designs”. A
efemeridade da Moda fascina-o: “Uma pessoa tem
o poder de criar uma tendência pessoal que pode
ser seguida pelo mundo”.
Sam Lambert é a metade criativa de uma laranja
mecânica artística, intitulada Art Comes First. A
outra metade é o seu companheiro de ofício, Shaka
Maidoh. A admiração dos dois ‘dandies’ contemporâneos pela arte da tradição e pelo ofício da manufactura deu origem, em 2008, a um projecto de
moda intemporal. Art Comes First é mais do que
uma marca – é uma comunidade artística, uma família de alfaiates de criatividade. O colectivo define-se pelas palavras ‘sartor’ – a tradição da alfaiataria que procuram manter viva; ‘alchemy’ – a
alquimia entre as diferentes formas de Arte que
combinam; e ‘progression’ – o desejo de continuar
a evoluir artisticamente.
A última colecção masculina lançada pela Art Comes First tem na etiqueta o nome ‘Avec Ces Frères’. Sam Lambert e Shaka Maidoh, como criativos “que vivem dentro das suas malas de viagem”,
desenharam uma linha sofisticada no seu minimalismo, para vestir o homem moderno, aventureiro
e turista. “Criada por viajantes, para viajantes”, a
Avec Ces Frères já percorreu o mundo na bagagem dos dois designers, com exposições em Florença, Paris, Nova Iorque e Las Vegas.
Para apresentação no futuro próximo, a Art Comes First está a preparar os projectos ‘Bleed for
Tweed’ e ‘Rudeboy to Roots Boy’. Entretanto, antes da Arte, vem o Artista.
