2016 Sacatar Residency Fellows Announced
Public Invited to Meet Artists at "Conversas com Sacatar"
March 31 at the Goethe-Institut in Salvador
Itaparica, Bahia & Pasadena, California (March 21, 2016) – Continuing the established
tradition of quarterly announcements of the award of Sacatar Fellowships for creative
individuals from throughout the world, Sacatar is honored to share the names of the six
selected Sacatar Fellows who will participate in a two-month residency session at Instituto
Sacatar on the Island of Itaparica, Bahia, Brazil from March 21 to May 16, 2016:
animator/filmmaker Elisabeth Zwimpfer (Switzerland/Germany), photographer Gordana
Hajinovic (Serbia), visual artist Luciana Magno (Brazil, winner of the 2016 PIPA Prize), visual
artist Lauren Adams (USA), choreographer/dancer Maureen Fleming (USA), and filmmaker
Meredith Lackey (USA). This is Ms. Fleming’s second Sacatar Fellowship award.
With the exception of PIPA Prize winners, all Sacatar Fellows are selected through a highly
competitive open call solicitation process that is conducted annually and semi-annually and
reviewed by a panel of experts and past Sacatar Fellows. Application for a Sacatar Fellowship
is open to creative individuals from throughout the world.
The public is invited to meet the awardees at an interactive artist talk called “Conversas com
Sacatar” on March 31, 2016 at 4pm at the Goethe-Institut located at Av. Sete de Setembro,
1809, in the Vitória neighborhood of Salvador, Bahia. Admission is free.

The PIPA Prize is offered through a partnership between IP Capital Partners and the MAM-Rio
and includes a Sacatar Fellowship as part of the award. It is the most prestigious award in
Brazilian visiual arts and artists are nominated for it by a nominating committee organized by

About Sacatar
Sacatar was established in 2000 as a non-profit organization to provide creative individuals
from around the world the time and physical space to create new work within an international
community of artists influenced by the unique culture of Bahia, Brazil. Since 2001, Sacatar has
awarded more than 300 Residency Fellowships to individuals from over 60 different countries
and has directly supported more than 500 community educational and cultural programs and
events in Brazil and abroad. In 2016, Sacatar anticipates hosting 25 creative individuals in four
separate 8-week sessions at its oceanside estate, the Instituto Sacatar, on the island of
Itaparica, a short ferry ride across the Bay of All Saints from the city of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.

“Conversas com Sacatar” is a quarterly series of interactive artist talks given by
recipients of Sacatar Residency Fellowships. The talks give Sacatar Fellows the
opportunity to share their past work while also engaging the audience with their plans
while in residency at Sacatar. At the talk, each Fellow will clarify her goals for her
residency and tell the audience what she seeks in collaborating with the local
community. Previous 'Conversas', allowed a Sacatar Fellow who was an
internationally noted hip-hop artist to connect with and hire dancers and a
cinematographer for a short film. Not all the Sacatar Fellows are in the financial
position to pay collaborators, but all welcome the opportunity to engage with and
learn from members of the local community.
The dates and locations of future "Conversas with Sacatar" will be announced with the
announcement of additional 2016 Sacatar Fellows.
Elisabeth Zwimpfer

Elisabeth has studied Graphic Design and Fine Arts at AdBK Nürnberg and Illustration
and Animation at the School Arts Kassel. Her work has been exhibited in solo and
group shows in Germany, Switzerland, South Korea, and Austria, including at the
prestigious contemporary art exhibition documenta in 2015. Her recent twelve
minute animation piece, "Ships Passing in the Night," was inspired by drawings made
by young refugees in Kassel, Germany, who came to Europe by boat.
In Salvador / Itaparica, Elisabeth would like to create a storyboard based on the wishes
and dreams of local street children which may become a graphic novel or an animated
movie.
She´s open to collaborating with the other Sacatar Fellows and is curious about
African influences in Bahian culture.
Gordana Hajinovic
Serbia

Based in Belgrade, Gordana has exhibited her work widely in solo and group
exhibitions in Italy, Slovenia, Spain, and Serbia and has received numerous awards in
international photo competitions.
The project Gordana seeks to pursue while in Bahia is research on several aspects of
documentary photography, including the limits of spontaneity and directing in
documentary photography. Gordana’s work explores the question of whether the
mere selection of a frame that a photographer makes represents a spontaneous
moment or the mere choice of some kind of directed reality.
She uses a mirror in her practice of photography. She is interested in exploring the
idea of decomposition - composing by decomposing - simultaneous photographing
what is in front and behind - mirroring environment and the people who are not even
aware of themselves reflected in it.
Lauren Adams

Lauren has exhibited at the North Carolina Museum of Art (Raleigh), the Warhol
Museum (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), an ex-Turkish bathhouse in Belgrade, Serbia,
Nymans House National Trust (England), Royal NoneSuch Gallery (Oakland, CA), The
Mattress Factory (Pittsburgh, PA), EXPO Chicago (with the Contemporary Art
Museum St. Louis), Contemporary Applied Arts (London) and CUE Art Foundation
(New York). She attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, has held
a residencies at the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans, La Cité internationale des
Arts in Paris, France, and Back Lane West in Cornwall. She is the recipient of the Joan
Mitchell Foundation MFA Award and a Puffin Foundation Grant. She holds an MFA
from Carnegie Mellon University and a BFA from the University of South Carolina at
Chapel Hill.
Best known for her works on paper and painted installations, Lauren facilitates
connections that further our understanding of empire, race, and labor. At Sacatar,
Lauren will continue her investigations into colonial relationships among and between
Brazil, the Netherlands, and Portugal. She is particularly interested in the expression
of political ideology in historical ornament, focusing on the tradition of azulejos (blue
tile).
Luciana Magno

PIPA Residency Prizewinner 2016

Widely exhibited throughout Brazil since 2007, Luciana is the 2016 PIPA Prize
awardee. A graduate of UNAMA – Universidade da Amazônia, she holds a Master’s in
Contemporary Art from the Universidade Federal do Pará. Her work can be found in
the permanent collections of Fundação Rômulo Maiorana, Museu Casa das Onze
Janelas, Museu de Arte Contemporânea do Rio Grande do Sul, Santander Cultural,
Museu da Universidade Federal do Pará, and Museu de arte do Rio de Janeiro/ MAR.
She was winner of the 10th edition of the National Network Programme Funarte
Visual Arts with the project Cordless Phone, which crossed the country from North to
South on highways and waterways, from which she created a video and audio file
about the cultural, historical and geographic Brazil. The integration of the body in the
landscape and the environment is a key and recurring element in her works.
At Instituto Sacatar in Bahia, she intends to observe the natural landscape and its
surrounding relationships while attempting to insert herself in the changes /
appropriations created by it. She also wishes to deepen her knowledge of “bilro,” the
handmade lace developed in several coastal cities of Brazil, especially in the
Northeast.
Maureen Fleming

Maureen is the Artistic Director/Performance Artist and Founder of the Maureen
Fleming Company. After extensive study in Japan with Kazuo Ohno, co-founder of
Butoh, an avant-garde movement developed in postwar Japan, Maureen went on to
perform with his son, Yoshiro Ohno, and to tour internationally with performance
artist and choreographer Min Tanaka. Maureen continued her training in the United
States as a scholarship student under the Cecchetti master Margaret Craske. In 1984
she became an artist-in-residence at La MaMa ETC in New York. She has completed
residencies at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, The Seoul Institute of the Arts, and The
Juilliard School. This is her second Residency Fellowship at Sacatar. Connecting
cultures and art forms, Fleming is renowned for her original form of visual theatre.
Her solo and group works have received international acclaim in such venues as
Japan's 1990 Butoh Festival, Italy's 1995 Spoleto and 1993 Milan Oltre Festivals,
Venezuela's 1994 Encuentro International, Mexico's 1995 Jose Limon Dance Festival,

and 'Decay of the Angel' and ‘Waters of Immortality’ and ‘B. MADONNA’ included
collaborations with playwright David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly), composer Philip
Glass, and light and visual artist Christopher Odo.
During the Sacatar Residency, she will create original choreography for her new
evening length work inspired by the mysteries of the iconic Black Madonna and the
miracles associated with her across cultures. She will give a presentation of the results
of her research at the culmination of the residency in a site in Itaparica. She will also
give workshops and classes in Fleming Elastxx, an original training method for
dancers.
Meredith Lackey

Filmmaker

As a filmmaker and artist, Meredith has shown her work in exhibitions and film
festivals throughout the world, including the New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center,
Ann Arbor Film Festival, and the Edinburgh International Film Festival. She received a
BA in Philosophy and Film/Video from Hampshire College and an MFA in Moving
Image from the University of Illinois Chicago. She is the recipient of the UFVA Carole
Fielding Grant and is a 2014 Princess Grace Foundation Honoraria winner.
Meredith Lackey will be shooting a short film and is looking for local non-actors to
appear in front of the camera. She would also like to hire someone with good English
skills to translate / guide / assist with equipment.
In addition, she is interested in connecting with the local youth media nonprofit,
Kaboom, or similar youth oriented NGOs. She would like to meet the organizers of
such groups and teach or assist with workshops and would like to connect with local
artists or political activists who are interested in politics and representation.

Trimestralmente fazemos a divulgação dos artistas do mundo todo que foram selecionados
para a residência artística do Sacatar. Temos a honra de compartilhar com vocês os nomes
das seis artistas selecionadas que participarão da próxima sessão de residência de dois meses
no Instituto Sacatar na Ilha de Itaparica, Bahia, Brasil, de 21 de Março a 16 de maio de 2016: a
Animadora e cineasta Elisabeth Zwimpfer (Suíça / Alemanha), fotógrafa Gordana Vojinovic
(Sérvia), a artista visual Luciana Magno (Brasil, vencedora do Prémio 2016 PIPA), a artista
plástica Lauren Adams (EUA), a cineasta Meredith Lackey (EUA) e a coreógrafa e dançarina
Maureen Fleming (EUA), que pela segunda vez vem ao Sacatar.
Com a exceção de ganhadores do Prêmio PIPA, todos os artistas do Sacatar são selecionados
através de um processo de seleção aberto e altamente competitivo, que é realizado
anualmente ou às vezes a cada seis meses, por um painel de especialistas e ex-residentes do
Sacatar. Inscrições para as residências artísticas do Sacatar estão abertas pessoas criativas do
mundo todo.
O público está convidado a conhecer os artistas selecionados durante um bate-papo
entitulado “Conversas com Sacatar” que acontecerá na quinta-feira dia 31 de março, das 16 às
18h no Goethe-Institut / ICBA localizado no Corredor da Vitória em Salvador. Entrada Franca.

Sobre o Sacatar
A Fundação Sacatar foi criada em 2000 como uma organização sem fins lucrativos que tem a
finalidade de fornecer a artistas do mundo todo tempo e espaço físico necessários para criar
novos trabalhos dentro de uma comunidade internacional de artistas influenciados pela
cultura única da Bahia, Brasil. Desde 2001, a Sacatar já concedeu mais de 300 residências para

Através de “Conversas com Sacatar”, realizado durante a primeira semana da
residência dos artistas na Bahia, a comunidade artística local tem a oportunidade de
conhecer o trabalho, as propostas e as necessidades de cada artista participante.
Neste evento os artistas esclarecem as suas metas para a residência e divulgam aos
ouvintes o que lhes falta para realizá-las. Por exemplo, durante uma edição anterior
de ‘Conversas’, uma artista de hip-hop quis contratar dançarinos e um diretor de
fotografia para um pequeno filme. Ela conheceu 20 dançarinos e contratou cinco
entre eles com a verba que ela tinha trazido à Bahia para realizar o trabalho. Nem
todo o artista que vem para o Sacatar tem verba para contratações, mas todos têm
interesses diversos e a plateia local pode ajudá-los, ao compartilhar as suas sugestões
e dicas.

Elisabeth estudou Design Gráfico e Belas Artes na AdBK em Nürnberg e Ilustração e
Animação no Arts Kassel School. Seu trabalho tem sido exibido em exposições
individuais e coletivas na Alemanha, Suíça, Coreia do Sul e na Áustria, incluindo a
prestigiada exposição de arte contemporânea “Documenta” em 2015.
Seu último curta de 12 minutos de duração chamado "Navios Passando na Noite" tem
por inspiração os desenhos de crianças refugiadas que vivem em Kassel, na Alemanha,
e que vieram de barco para a Europa.
Em Salvador / Itaparica, a artista gostaria de fazer um projeto sobre desejos e sonhos,
que podem ser de uma história em quadrinhos ou um filme de animação.
Ela pretende colaborar com as outras artistas residentes do Sacatar. E está curiosa
sobre as influências africanas na Bahia.
Gordana Hajinovic

Morando atualmente em Belgrado, Gordana já expôs seu trabalho amplamente em
exposições individuais e coletivas em Itália, Eslovênia, Espanha e Sérvia e recebeu
inúmeros prêmios em competições internacionais de fotografia.
O projeto no qual ela deseja trabalhar na Bahia é uma investigação de vários aspectos
da fotografia documental, tais como:
- O limite da espontaneidade e direção da fotografia documental - se a simples
seleção de um quadro que fotógrafo faz representa um momento espontâneo ou a
mera escolha representa algum tipo de realidade dirigida?
Ela geralmente usa um espelho nas suas fotos. A ideia que ela quer trabalhar é a
decomposição - compor decompondo - fotografando simultaneamente o que está na
frente e atrás através do reflexo de meio ambiente e as pessoas que sequer estão
conscientes das suas imagens refletidas nele.

Lauren já expôs no Museu de Arte da Carolina do Norte (Raleigh), o Museu Warhol
(Pittsburgh, Pensilvânia), numa antiga casa de banhos turcos em Belgrado, Sérvia, no
Nymans House National Trust (Inglaterra), no Royal NoneSuch Gallery (Oakland, CA),
na The Mattress Factory (Pittsburgh, PA), na EXPO Chicago (com o Museu de Arte
Contemporânea de St. Louis), na Contemporary Applied Arts (Londres) e na Fundação
de Arte CUE (Nova York). Ela frequentou a Escola Skowhegan de Pintura e Escultura,
participou de residências no Joan Mitchell Center, em Nova Orleans, La Cité

com as conexões que promovem nossa compreensão do império, raça e trabalho. No
Sacatar, Lauren vai continuar suas investigações sobre as relações coloniais entre o
Brasil, os Países Baixos e Portugal, incluindo a expressão de ideologia política no
ornamento histórico, focando em particular a tradição de azulejos portugueses.

Já apresenta seu trabalho pelo Brasil desde 2007, Luciana é a ganhadora Prêmio PIPA
2016. Se formou pela UNAMA - Universidade da Amazônia, ela possui um Mestrado
em Arte Contemporânea da Universidade Federal do Pará. Sua obra pode ser
encontrada nas coleções permanentes da Fundação Rômulo Maiorana, Museu Casa
das Onze Janelas, Museu de Arte Contemporânea do Rio Grande do Sul, Santander
Cultural, Museu da Universidade Federal do Pará e Museu de Arte do Rio de Janeiro /
MAR. A integração do corpo à paisagem e ao entorno é um elemento determinante e
recorrente em suas obras. Foi ganhadora da 10ª edição do Programa Rede Nacional
Funarte Artes Visuais com o projeto Telefone Sem Fio, que cruzou o país do Oiapoque
ao Chuí por rodovias e hidrovias, a partir do qual se constituiu um arquivo de vídeo e
áudio acerca da diversidade cultural, histórica e geográfica do Brasil. Vive e trabalha
entre Belém e Fortaleza.
No Instituto Sacatar na Bahia, pretende, além de observar e tentar se inserir na
paisagem natural e suas relações do entorno, modificações / apropriações, aprofundar
conhecimentos sobre o bilro, renda artesanal desenvolvida em várias cidades
litorâneas do Brasil, em especial na região nordeste.

Maureen é a Diretora Artística / Artista de Performance e Fundadora da Maureen
Fleming Company. Depois de extenso estudo no Japão com Kazuo Ohno, co-fundador
do Butoh, um movimento de vanguarda desenvolvida no Japão pós-guerra, Maureen
passou a trabalhar com o filho dele, Yoshiro Ohno, e fazer uma turnê internacional
com o artista e coreógrafo Min Tanaka. Maureen continuou a sua formação nos
Estados Unidos como estudante do mestre Cecchetti Margaret Craske. Em 1984, ela

visual artist Christopher Odo.
Durante a residência no Sacatar, a artista pretende criar uma nova coreografia para o
seu trabalho inspirado nos mistérios da icónica Madona Negra e os milagres
associados a ela através das culturas e fazer uma apresentação da sua pesquisa no
final de sua residência em um local de Itaparica a ser definido. Também pretende
trabalhar no “Fleming Elastix”, um método de treinamento para dançarinos através de
aulas e workshops.

Como cineasta e artista, Meredith tem mostrado seu trabalho em exposições e
festivais de cinema em todo o mundo, incluindo o Festival de Cinema de Nova York,
no Lincoln Center, Ann Arbor Film Festival e no Festival Internacional de Cinema de
Edimburgo. Ela é bacharel em Filosofia e Cinema / Vídeo do Hampshire College e tem
um mestrado em Imagem em Movimento da Universidade de Illinois em Chicago. Ela
ganhou prêmios da UFVA Carole Fielding e da Princess Grace Foundation, em 2014.
Meredith Lackey irá fazer um curta-metragem e está à procura de não-atores locais
para atuar no filme. Ela também gostaria de contratar alguém com bons
conhecimentos de inglês para traduzir / guia / ajudar com equipamentos.
Além disso, ela está interessada em se conectar com a Oi Kaboom, uma organização
local sem fins lucrativos ou outra ONG que também trabalha a juventude carente. Ela
gostaria de conhecer os organizadores de tais grupos e promover oficinas. E também
gostaria de encontrar com artistas locais engajados e ativistas políticos para conhecer
o trabalho e trocar ideias.
