AQUÁRIO DO GUARUJÁ
(ACQUA MUNDO)
Acqua Mundo has emphasized
education, research and entertainment
since its inauguration.
It offers 49 enclosures to the visitors
(freshwater, seawater, terrariums and
water terrariums) with samples from
various terrestrial and marine habitats.
The main attraction is the Ocean, a
tank with 800 thousand liters of seawater,
especially built for the exhibition of fish
shoal and fish from the open sea, such as ocean sharks.
Acqua Mundo shows several species of aquatic animals, representing
different environments and zoological groups – sharks, penguins, and other
aquatic birds, freshwater and seawater fishes, turtles and reptiles such as lizards,
crocodiles and snakes. In total there are 235 species and 8,000 animals exhibited
among
invertebrates,
freshwater
and
seawater fishes, birds and mammals.
In order to have a natural behavior,
animals are kept in enclosures which are a
replica of their natural habitat – like the
mangrove swamp, coastão*, coral reef,
flooded Amazon Forest, Pantanal, sand
beach, and Contact tank where the visitor can
touch hedgehogs, starfishes and baby sharks.

BARRA BONITA
Our aim is to understand the operation
and importance of a lock for Rio Tietê (river).
Lock Barra Bonita
The Best definition for a lock is “water
elevator”. This is its main function: to raise and
lower boats between stretches of water of
different levels on the river.
Locks are built in order to make a river
or canal more easily navigable where natural geological features such as
waterfalls, rapids, etc make it impossible to navigate.
One of the most famous locks in the world which connects the Atlantic and
the Pacific oceans is the Panama Canal.
The lock in Barra Bonita is very similar to the one in the Panama Canal and
it was the first in Latin America. It is 12 meters wide and 142 meters long, which
are necessary to overcome a gap of 26 meters.
One of its main advantages to the state of São Paulo is the enlargement of
the navigable course of Rio Tietê, making it an important waterway and
facilitating the transport of products such as sugar and ethanol fuel.

BERTIOGA – WATER CYCLE
During this itinerary we will
visit the place where the water is
collected and distributed for the
consumption of Riviera de São
Lourenço, in Rio Itapanhaú (river),
inside the area of Parque Estadual
da Serra do Mar.
Next, we will head to the
Wastewater treatment plant and
finally we will visit the Sewage
treatment plant, as well as the place where the water returns to Rio Itapanhaú.
This way, we believe to raise the student’s awareness for the fact that the
water, although being a renewable source, is
becoming each day scarcer. By getting to know all
the consumption cycles and reinforcing the
knowledge about the importance of water for
human beings, students become more responsible
consumers and can multiply their conscious
behavior.

BIBLIOTECA MONTEIRO
LOBATO
The Biblioteca Infantil Municipal was created on April,
14, 1936 as part of a vast project to increment culture. This project
was elaborated by a group of intellectuals lead by Mário de
Andrade, director of the Municipal Department of Culture at the
time.
It is the oldest children’s library in Brazil and an
inspiration for other similar ones that followed in the capital as well as in the
country side of the state of São Paulo. Thanks to the educator Lenyra Camargo
Fraccaroli, who, besides managing the library until 1960, also encouraged and
supervised the building of several children’s libraries in many neighborhoods of
the capital.
It is known that the writer Monteiro Lobato used to come to the library to
tell stories to the children.
The place became small to hold all visitors and in 1945 the library moved to
the old house of Senator Rodolfo Miranda, on Rua General Jardim, where we
can find nowadays the square of the library.
At this new place the activities were expanded and in 1947 a room for the
blind children was created, the Braille section which is working at Centro
Cultural São Paulo these days. Next to this
building the current library building was
constructed, on Rua General Jardim, 485 –
launched on December, 24, 1950.
In 1955, the library received the name
of Monteiro Lobato in honor of the writer
that so much enchants the children, young
people and adults.

CAMINHOS DO MAR
(THE WAY TO THE SEA)
In the middle of the Atlantic Forest, among
Trumpet trees, Mastic trees, Guatambus
(Balfourodendron riedelianum), Cecropias and
other native species, the old road to Santos – once
called Age of Majority road – is an important part
of Brazilian history.
Privileged for being only 45 km away from
São Paulo downtown, “Caminhos do Mar” is
more than just a tour option.
Besides being a place that combines different types of landscape it is also
historic, environmental, cultural and technological heritage, declared by
UNESCO as a biosphere reserve.
There are 9 monuments spread out in the area, 8 of them built in 1922 as a
celebration of Brazil’s Independence Centenary. The oldest one, Calçada do
Lorena built in 1792, is a stone paved road built over the way of an old trail used
by Native Brazilians who used to carry goods between the high plain of São
Paulo and the coast.
We suggest a 9 km-walk along the old road of
Santos, amongst the Atlantic Forest, through river
sources and by the historic monuments built in
1922,
reaching
the
monument
Cruzeiro
Quinhentista, in Cubatão. As we get down, we can
walk along a trail until a pool in Rio Perequê
(river), where we have the opportunity to refresh
ourselves with pleasant dives.

SERRA DA CANTAREIRA - SP
Serra da Cantareira (mountain range),
Green Belt of São Paulo, is a part of what
remains from the tropical forests found at
the time when Brazil was discovered. For
this reason, this biosphere reserve has been
declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage
site.
There, we can visit Núcleo Pedra
Grande, located next to Horto Florestal, in
the north part of the city of São Paulo, and
we can walk along the trails, to develop activities related to Science, Biology and

COFFEE FARMS
Fazenda Ibicaba, in Cordeirópolis,
preserves almost its entire architectural
complex from the 19th Century, when it used
to be the largest coffee producer in the
country. Founded in 1817 by Senator
Vergueiro, Ibicaba was one of the pioneers to
replace slavery by labor work which was
done by European immigrants (using the
partnership system) 40 years before the
Abolitionism, housing up to 700 colonial families.
This itinerary enables to approach the following topics: History of Brazil / 19th
Century; rural aristocracy with its political, economic and cultural aspects;
slavery and slaves’ way of living in the farms;
coffee economy and its production aspects;
European immigration and the main populations
which immigrated to Brazil, the colonial life in
the farms; etc.
Located near Campinas, Fazenda Monte
D’Este is another very interesting option for
didactic purposes.

MONTEIRO LOBATO
Taubaté and Pindamonhangaba
During this itinerary our aim will be to
broaden our knowledge about Monteiro
Lobato, one of the greatest names of Brazilian
Literature.
We will begin our tour with a visit to
Museu Monteiro Lobato, in the city of Taubaté,
located in the farm where the author was born
and lived part of his life.
The property has, nowadays, a green
area of 18 thousand square meters, with a dozen of large rooms, wooden
windows, walls of rammed earth, and the T letter format, typical farm-type
building of the so called “coffee cities”.
Next, we will go to Parque Reino das Águas Claras, in the city of
Pindaminhangaba, located in a calm area of Rio Piracuama.
This river, which in Native language means Fish Hole does not present any
sign of pollution.
The origin of the name “Reino das Águas
Claras” (literally: Kingdom of Crystal Clear
Waters) comes from the writer’s literary work.
For this same reason, the park has been
exhibiting artistic ceramics sculptures of the
characters from Sítio do Pica-Pau Amarelo (one
of Monteiro Lobato’s most famous work pieces).

OFNER
Confeitaria Ofner was founded in 1952 by the Hungarian immigrant Anna
Ofner. Anna started her business in Brazil by making sweets for the family,
friends and neighbors and, because of her success, she opened her first shop and
a small factory on Rua Barata Ribeiro in the neighborhood of Bela Vista in São
Paulo.
This factory remained there until 1985 and then a new branch of 5000m2
was launched in 1986, on Rua Olivia Guedes Penteado, in the neighborhood of
Socorro, São Paulo, where it remains up to these days.
There, students will be able to get to know about how a food factory works
and the process of making sweets; “get down to work” and taste the sweets they
make.

PARANAPIACABA
Paranapiacaba is a small village emerged from
the necessity to connect the country side of São
Paulo to Porto de Santos (The Port of Santos) for the
handling of the coffee production in the 19th
Century. During that time English people were
famous for developing and building railways in
various places in the world. That is why they were
hired for this construction in Serra do Mar
(mountain range).
Paranapiacaba is, nowadays, an important historic architectural complex,
supported by the City Hall of Santo André and listed by CONDEPHAAT
(Council for the Protection of Historical, Artistic, Archaeological and Tourist
Heritage).
We will walk along the “English village” and appreciate the details of its
buildings and most important places.

PRAIA BRANCA – GUARUJÁ
With an extraordinary variety of ecosystems of unique scenery, Brazil is a
country that features a lot of opportunities to the study of the coast.
Furthermore, the coastal area is a result of three geomorphologic elements: air,
water and reefs.
However, mankind puts enormous pressure on the coast ecosystems,
occupying them in a disorganized way for several reasons: whether they are
industrial, touristic or recreational.
The tour to Praia Branca – Guarujá – SP helps us know about different
natural environments typical of a coastal area, such as mangrove swamps,
costão rochoso*, beaches, dunes and the restinga (moist broadleaf forests). The
access to this small beach is through a trail along the Atlantic Forest, where we
will be able to get in touch with its typical flora and fauna.
The study comprises subjects such as: Biology (the study of ecosystems,
species’ natural selection, and ecologic concepts), Geography and Geology (the
formation of the systems, notions of oceanography, and the physical
environment) and History (mankind exploitation).

The main aim of this itinerary is to rescue the importance of the Bandeiras
(literally: “flags”) in the history of the state of São Paulo regarding the inscribed
signs on historic heritage and on the economic and political development as well
as to contrast the several representations of Bandeiras movement towards the
identity of paulistas (people of São Paulo).
Furthermore, we will be able to observe the different forms of land
settlement and discuss the transformations occurred in the region.
Related to the subject of Geography, students can develop their abilities of

SALESÓPOLIS
In 1953, the Brazilian Geographic
Association determined the exact place of the
source of Rio Tietê (river), 25 km from
Salesópolis - SP, in a farm named Pedra
Rajada in the west side of Serra do Mar
(mountain range), 840 m high.
Different from all the other rivers in the
state, Tietê runs to northwest towards inner
land until it flows into Rio Paraná (river). Its
course takes approximately 1050 km and has
an average production of 600 m3/s
in its mouth.
In the Metropolitan area of
São Paulo, Rio Tietê has an average
discharge of 40 to 50 m3/s and in
addition, as its main tributaries, it
has Tamanduatei and Pinheiros
rivers.

SANTANA DO PARANAÍBA
AND EMBÚ DAS ARTES
This itinerary will provide us with the study
of the colonization of the city of São Paulo through
the recognition of local architecture and the
influences from the Portuguese and Jesuits. We will
visit 2 cities, Santana do Parnaíba and Embú das
Artes.
The strategic location of the first, due to Rio Tietê and
the ancient native route, way to the backlands of
Goiás and Mato Grosso, gave it the upgrade status to
the category of a Village in 1625, causing disputes
with the Villages of São Paulo and Santo André da
Borda do Campo. After the Civil War in São Paulo, many of the Seigneurs came
to reside in this Village.
In Embu das Artes, the catechized Native Brazilians, who belonged to the
tribe of Tupi-Guarani, were distinguished farmers, musicians and artisans. In
this century, the history of Embú is connected with the recovering of the art of
the Natives. At the end of January 1969, right in the middle of the hippie
movement, the artcraft fair began and it takes place every Saturday, Sunday and
holidays ever since.

SANTOS
Santos is located on the coast of the state
of São Paulo, 70 km from the capital city.
Since settling times the city has been
known as “the place of provision”. Throughout
time, it has played an important role in
different moments of Brazil’s history, from our
Independence and abolishment of slavery
towards the change to Republic. Nowadays the
Port of Santos is the largest in Latin America.
During this itinerary we will visit Santuário Nossa Senhora de Monte Serrat,

Pinacoteca / Estação Pinacoteca / Mercado Municipal
During this itinerary we intend to get to
know more about the history of the city of São Paulo
via its main museums, monuments and buildings.
Among these, we highlight Pinacoteca do
Estado, Mercado Municipal, Jardim da Luz and
Estação Pinacoteca.
Pinacoteca do Estado is the oldest museum
of the city. The building was initially constructed to
be an art gallery together with Liceu de Artes e Ofícios. Nowadays it offers one
of the most broadening panoramas of Brazilian Art from the 19th / 20th centuries.
Mercado Municipal was projected by Ramos de Azevedo and opened on
January 25, 1933. It was built alongside Rio Tamanduateí (river) arising from the
needs to attend the demands of the emerging “Coffee Metropolis”. Parque da
Luz (originally Jardim da Luz) was created in the 18th Century and it is the
oldest botanic garden in the city of São Paulo. In
1825, it was open to the public as Jardim Botânico
da Luz, becoming the first leisure space for the
people of São Paulo. Estação Pinacoteca was built
in 1914 and projected by Ramos de Azevedo as
well. It has recently been refurbished and with
around 8,000 m² of area, it offers a new approach to
its use, related to the cultural life of the city.

SERRA DO JAPI
Serra do Japi represents one of the last areas of
continuous forest in the state and it is an example of
exuberant fauna and flora which were present in most of
the Southeast region. Occupying 354 km2, it includes
four cities: Jundiaí, Cabreúva, Pirapora do Bom Jesus and
Cajamar. One of the fewest mountain ranges in the
country preserved as Historic Heritage, Serra do Japi is
considered nowadays as a biosphere reserve – world’s
preservation area recognized by the UN. Its flora features
ferns, bromeliads, orchids, enormous trees and flowers
full of colors with different shapes and perfume, presenting the visitor with a
