18 JULY
NELSON MANDELA
INTERNATIONAL DAY
It was with joy mingled with sorrow that the world marked Nelson
Mandela International Day on 18
July, the 95th birthday of South
Africa’s historic leader.
Through General Assembly
resolution A/RES/64/13, the United
Nations paid tribute to Nelson
Rolihlahla Mandela’s dedication to
the service of humanity, as a humanitarian, in the fields of conflict
resolution, race relations, promotion
and protection of human rights,
reconciliation, gender equality and
the rights of children and other
vulnerable groups, as well as the
upliftment of poor and underdeveloped communities.
On that day member countries recognise his contribution to
international democracy and the
promotion of a culture of peace in
the world.
The world organisation recalls
the MADIBA, as he is known,
devoted his life to the struggle for
human rights and social justice,
which is why the UN, together with
the Mandela Foundation, called on
people all over the world to dedicate
at least 67 minutes of their time to
community service on that day •

Ambassador Miguel Neto
congratulates President José
Eduardo dos Santos
The history of humanity and of every nation marks the memorable dates of
outstanding world leaders and personalities whose deeds, in the course of their
lives, have contributed decisively to the all round progress of science, humanity,
societies and their citizens.
I
n Angola, 28 August is such a
date, the historic dimension of
which transcends its frontiers
to mark the birthday of one of
its finest sons, who was able, through
his own merit, to gain the respect and
admiration of the most developed
countries in the world, firmly and calmly standing out among world statesmen in the struggle for human development, giving clear proof of being
a charismatic leader who, in the most
troubled times of Angola’s historical
trajectory, has been able to interpret
the supreme will of his people in the
struggle to win peace.
Thus, on marking another birthday
of His Excellency the President of the
Republic, Angola’s Ambassador in the
United Kingdom, on his own behalf,
that of his family and of the staff of
his diplomatic mission, expressed his
profound support and dedication to
the fundamental ideals of the Angolan
nation “wisely led by Your Excellency,
whose firmness enables us to renew
our hope in a better future, and we
take this solemn opportunity to wish
you, on this festive day, a long life, a
happy birthday and much happiness,
as well as to your esteemed family” •

The London Array wind farm will

An oil economy on the way
to diversification
The Deutsche Bank (DB) recently published a study on the Angolan economy in
which it highlighted the reforms being made for diversification.
Entitled “Angola: An oil economy on the way to diversification”, it forecasts that
growth in Angola will be about 7% in the next few years, after an average of
11% over the past decade and a forecst of more than 8% in 2012.
Noting that diversification is on the agenda, the DB
considers that the €3,700 million available in Angola’s
Sovereign Fund launched in October “should help to isolate the economy from volatile oil prices”.
“Representing about half of Gross Domestic Product,
95% of exports and 75% of revenue, Angola’s oil industry
(the second biggest in Africa, after Nigeria) is the most
Angola: Oil production may attain two million barrels a day by 2015
dynamic in sub-Saharan Africa, owing to continuous exploration and a favourable regulatory climate,” the DB stresses.
Oil production should attain two million barrels a day
by 2015, well over the 1.75 million barrels a day in 2012.
The study forecasts that “if pre-salt reserves recently
discovered prove similar to those found in Brazil, Angola
could become the biggest oil producer in Africa” •

African Women’s Day
According to an African proverb, ‘When you
educate a woman, you educate a people’. An African
women indeed has great responsibilities! She
works hard, she provides... even when the soil and
drought are against her! She cares for and heads
the house... To children, young people and the
aged... she offers care.
African Woman! Often forgotten, denigrated,
citizen without voice... Woman who knows
how to bind family links... indissoluble... Who
extends blood links, uniting nuclei into a greater
whole! Symbol of redemption, hope, culture, peace,
reflection!
Though never demanding her rights, she is
sublimated on a throne of power! Never giving
priority to dreams, her ardent wishes are however:
rain to fertilise the land, abundant provision,
a glut of peace, love... Multiply hoe, subtract
suffering; divide happiness, add value...
Valiant women! Nationalists, ambassadors,
princesses, queens... Women of gigantic continents...
of culture, resistance, fortress.. Women bridges,
landmarks.. of the Past and great matrix of the
Present... African Woman, I pay a tribute to you.
You were and always will be eloquent!...
