Working together to prevent
Animal Cruelty Seminar
Portimão – 13th April 2016
As result of the considerable interest in the first Animal Cruelty Prevention Seminar held at the Conrad Hotel in
February, and in response to requests to hold a second one in the Western Algarve, a second seminar is being held by
Safe Communities Algarve. Senior government officials and Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Portugal will be among those
attending.
The event will take place at the Auditoria of the Tempo Teatro, Portimão on 13th April from 1500 to 1900 hours. Under
the theme: “Working together to prevent animal cruelty”, the objective of the seminar is once again to create
awareness of this issue, an understanding of the work of the various entities involved and how through working
together improvements can be made.
The event will be opened by Exmº Presidente da Câmara Municipal de Portimão, Dra. Isilda Maria Prazeres Varges
Gomes; Deputy Presidente of Associação de Municipios do Algarve (AMAL), Dr. Rui André; PSD Algarve Deputado Cristovão Norte; Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Portugal, Mrs. Kirsty Hayes; and David Thomas President Safe
Communities Portugal.
A panel of government and non-government expert speakers will present various topics, namely:








Dr.ª Cristina Ferradeira, Direção de Serviços de Alimentação e Veterinária da Região do Algarve
Tenente Pedro Fernandes, Adjunto do Comandante do Destacamento Territorial de Silves GNR;
A representative of the Publica Segurança Policia (PSP)
Dr.ª Ana Silva, Médica Veterinária, Municipal Monchique
Dr. Osvaldo Mateus, Médica Veterinária, Municipal Portimão
Dr.ª Maria Pinto Teixeira – President Associação Animais de Rua
Angela Morado - an animal rescue volunteer
Beverley Gibbons – Pine Trees Riding Centre
The subjects to be covered include: the work of the GNR SEPNA and PSP concerning the rescue of animals and
enforcement of laws; an overview of the responsibilities and procedures of the DGAV Faro; animal welfare in
Monchique; the workings of a municipal kennel, the work of an animal rescue volunteer, the equine perspective,
dealing with horses. Following this there will be a panel discussion in order that those attending can ask questions.
The event will be in English and entry is free. It is open to everyone who has either interest in or who work with
animals. As for the first seminar and with a number of officials and key speakers it is likely to be heavily
subscribed.

riverside where there is free parking and walk about 10 minutes.
