Present: Mr DJ Jessett (Chairman), Mesdames EM Anfield, H Fitsell, JB James, J Jessett, and FH Graham, J Johnston, GI Pickering, WJ Turner, and Olr M Rodger. o Pickering, and Messrs RG Freemantle, 1. The Minutes of the meeting held on 24 June 1999 (copies circulated with the agenda) were, as slightly amended, agreed as a true record and signed by the Chairman. 3. Correspondence: The Chairman reported a letter from the Town Council about a new Town Guide. RESOLVED that the Chairman produce a suitable item about the Association for insertion. 4. International Reunion at Kiskunfelegyhaza: (a) Mrs Anfield reported on the successfulvisit made by 7 members of the Association and 11 Footballers. Messrs Graham and Turner gave supplementary information. RESOLVED that Mrs Anfield be thanked for organising the travelling arrangements. (b) Football Competition: The Chairman reported a letter from Phil Barnett. There had been many complaints about foul play and the poor standard of refereeing, such that the Belgians were not keen to continue participating in the Competition. The Newbury team had played well, but unsuccessfully. There seemed to be some confusion as to the venue for the Competition in 2000. RESOLVED that (i) The Chainnan reply to Phil Barnett to thank him for his hard work and to offer reimbursement by the Association for any items presented at Kiskunfelegyhazafor which Phil had paid out of his own pocket; (ii) Mr Johnston confirm with the French that the next Competition would take place during the 2000 International Reunion at Bagnols-sur-ceze; (iii) The rules of the Competition, particularly with regard to the participation of professional teams, and the standard of future referees, be raised at the next International Committee. 5. International Committee Meeting 1999: The Chairnlan reported that the French would be combining this with the reciprocal celebration of the 50th anniversary of the twinning with Braunfels during the weekend of 18-22November 1999. RESOLVED that the Chairman, Mr Johnston, Mrs Anfield, and Miss Fitsell represent the Association. Cllr Rodger was invited to join the party if he could do so. 6. Finance: The Treasurer reported on the Current and Deposit Accounts' balances (copy filed with these Minutes). Income included Subscriptions, Bank Interest, and social events receipts. Expenditure included Bank Charges due to additional cheques, hire of Coaches, and payments for social events. 7. Membership: There were 5 members whose subscriptions were still outstanding, 4 of which would be struck off the list. Youth for Europe had produced 2 new members. There was 1 other new member. (a) (i) (ii) Braunfels: Mrs Anfield rep011edwith regard to Schools exchange - 6 pupils and 1 teacher would go to Wetzlar between 22-31 October 1999; Schools visits - her proposed visit to Turnpike School to talk at a lunchtime assembly had been postponed until the start of the new Trinity School. (b) (i) Bagnols-sur-ceze: Mr Johnston reported with regard to Schools Exchange- the visit by French children (16-28 July) had been very good. 25 pupils and 2 teachers had gone to Bagnols-sur-ceze (20 August - 1 September) using the TGV. Mme Medard and Mr Plagne had been interviewed by the magazine 'Berkshire Life' in which they had expressed concern at the fall from about 95 in 1989to 25 this year, in the number of pupils taking part in the exchanges. He had agreed, in an interview by Thames Valley FM, with the French concern, and had talked about the benefits of the exchanges. Fresco for the Ecole Jules Ferry - despite a call by Mrs Higden of Falkland School to the (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) (d) (i) (ii) Ecole, and a call by him to Mme Bernardet, no further progress had been made. Both he and Mrs Higden would pursue the matter when the Ecole reopened. Junior Football Competition - At the request of Mr Ken Seward, Wash Common Wanderers, he would find out whether an International Competition was still being run. Don Juan in the Millennium - he was pursuing ideas suggested by Mr Turner as to how this might be tackled, and about 6 'actors' would be needed; He had given information on contacts to Southern Sinfonia which was considering a concert tour to Bagnols-sur-CCzeand, possibly to the other Twin Towns. Feltre: Mrs Pickering reported with regard to the young Italian chef who had worked successfullyat The Vineyard Hotel. the duplicate twinning ceremony with Braunfels (the weekend of 10 - 12 September 1999). She had discussed this with Giancarlo Scopel. ClIr Rodger confirmed he would attend. The Hon Secretary reported those members interested in attending. RESOLVED that Mr & Mrs Barnett, and Mr Graham represent the Association. 9. Youth for Europe: Miss Fitsell reported that a successfulgathering at Feltre had been attended by 35 young people, 9 from Newbury. Nobody had come from Denmark, Hungary, or Spain. The meeting next year would be at Eeklo. Due to her University studies, she would not be able to attend most future meetings, but would do what she could. The Chairman thanked her for the work she had done so far. 10. Flag-pole Flags: The Chairman, Mrs Anfield, and Mr Freemantle each reported no progress. The Chairman would seek local assistance. 11. Widening the Circle of Twin Towns: The Hon Secretary reported an invitation from the Town Clerk to address the Town Council on Monday 6 September 1999. The Chairman outlined, mainly for the benefit of Cllr Rodger, what would be involved. Cllr Rodger made some helpful comments about points to emphasise. RESOLVED that the Chairman and Hon Secretary be the principal speakers, and that other Committee members could attend to answer questions, if any, raised by Councillors. 12. Social Events: Mrs J ames reported that 21 people had attended the meal The Bunk on 19 July. The service was poor so the proposed service charge was not paid. The Hon Secretary and Mrs James reported the likely attendance at the proposed barbecue on 3 September 1999. Mrs Turner would provide food. The Chairman would provide drinks. RESOLVED that (a) the proposed trip to Bruges be not pursued; (b) the proposed meal at the Sun in the Wood on 21 November 1999 be cancelled; (c) Mrs James book a table at The Madagascan Gin Palace on 27 September 1999; (d) Mr Turner book seats for The NOS production of Camelot on Friday 12 November 1999. (e) if available, a Quiz for groups of 6, organised by Mr & Mrs Pickering, be held at St Francis de Sales Hall, on 22 October 1999,with a Fish & Chip Supper. 13. Millennium Celebrations: Mr Freemantle reported that he had written to the Millennium Committee about the Web Site presentation of the Programme, which he did not consider satisfactory. 15. Tourist Information: Cllr Roger reported that the Town Council intended to up-date the information which the Tourist Information Office issued about the Twin Towns. 17.
