The mission of El Camino College is to meet the educational needs
of our diverse community and ensure student success by offering
quality, comprehensive educational opportunities.
Equipment, Furniture, and Supply Funds Allocated
Using the 2010-11 planning process, approximately $3.4 million of prioritized items are being funded in the
current year to support our instruction and student support service programs. The funds will be used to purchase
new instructional and non-instructional equipment identified through the planning process. Measure E bond
funds will provide $2.1 million in equipment monies. The additional $1.2 million is being allocated from Fund 15
and the unrestricted general fund. The $1.2 million will be used to purchase equipment, supplies and classroom
furniture. About $75,000 from the block grant fund is also being allocated to buy instructional equipment.
The funding is the end result of the linkage between planning, budgeting and the program review process.
All of the equipment and classroom furniture were identified through program plans and via program review
recommendations completed in the past three years. The process involves students, faculty, classified and
administrators.
A Frighteningly Fun Celebration!
The Student Activities Center was alive with the
Halloween “spirit” at the Classified Service Awards
celebration on October 26. The Halloween theme was in
full force throughout the event, which featured a grand
entrance by ECC’s “Phantom of the Opera,” fantastic
décor, “table treats” and a costume contest recognizing
incredible disguises. Winners include: Creepiest, Steve
Camper; Funniest, Rita Bruce; Most Creative, Christine
Saldana; Most Fierce, Nina Velasquez; and Best Overall,
Luukia Smith.
Many thanks to emcee Harold Tyler; the Human
Resources Department for organizing, planning and
decorating; and Campus Food Services, for providing
delectable refreshments.

Welcome New Staff
Our newest staff members were officially welcomed at
our Classified Service Award celebration, and introduced
by Harold Tyler (dressed as a cool biker dude). Many
attended the fun and fantastically frightening event, and
took a moment to take this group photo with ECC’s
“Phantom of the Opera.”
Welcome: Board of Governors
Our warmest welcome to the Board of Governors (BOG)
of the California Community Colleges who visited our
college on November 8-9. The board meets once per year
at a local community college, and we are pleased that they
selected El Camino College for 2010.
The BOG visit included a tour of El Camino College
on Monday afternoon; and a tour of Compton Center on
Tuesday morning.
In Appreciation: Nathaniel Jackson
We wish the best to Dr. Nathaniel
Jackson, a longtime member of the
El Camino College Board of Trustees
who will vacate his board seat at the
November 15 meeting. Dr. Jackson’s
contributions to the board and the college
cover four decades, beginning with his
tenure as a Special Services Coordinator in 1971. He taught
psychology and human behavior at ECC, and served as a
dean for four departments by the time he retired in 1990.
After his retirement, Dr. Jackson was elected to serve the
college as a board member in 1995.
The holder of a doctorate in human psychological
behavior and education leadership from United States
International University, Dr. Jackson also has a bachelor’s
degree and two master’s degrees from California State
University, Los Angeles. In addition to his service to the
college, he is widely known for his dedication to a variety
of professional and service organizations.
Accreditation Steering Committee
Accreditation Steering Committee (ASC) members
met for the first time October 25, joining co-chairs
Compton District CEO Larry Cox, ECC Compton Center
VP Barbara Perez, and Acting President, Faculty Council
Estina Pratt. Accreditation Liaison Officer (ALO) ECC
VP Francisco Arce conferred the meeting.
The group discussed the importance of developing a
“culture of evidence” and a “culture of accreditation” that
must be present for accreditation to be successful. The
ASC was also asked to help share accurate and updated
information about accreditation progress. Members of
the ASC include: Alisha Harrell, Jo Ann Higdon, Andrew
Krynicki, Joseph Lewis, Jeanie Nishime, Saul Panski,
Estina Pratt, Rachelle Sasser, Chelvi Subramaniam and
Pieter Van Niel.
ASC members were provided with the 21 eligibility
criteria set forth by the Accrediting Commission for
Community and Junior Colleges and a copy of the
Accreditation Handbook. To be eligible to apply for
accreditation, all 21 criteria and the Standards for
Accreditation must be met.
The ASC is in the process of forming five subcommittees
to assess and respond to the 21 eligibility criteria
for accreditation. Members will also gather relevant
evidence demonstrating that the Compton Center meets
each one of the standards. Subcommittees will address
the following areas: Organization, Instruction/Faculty,
Student Services/Public Information, Financial Integrity,
and Planning and Evaluation.
Those interested in serving on one of the subcommittees
should contact Barbara Perez or Lawrence Cox. Members
of the subcommittees must regularly attend meetings and
actively participate in the work of the committee.
