6 [email protected] CHUVA Project – The GoAmazon Campaign CHUVA, meaning “rain” in Portuguese, is the acronym for the Cloud processes of tHe main precipitation systems in Brazil: A contribUtion to cloud resolVing modeling and to the GPM (GlobAl Precipitation Measurement). The CHUVA project has conducted five field campaigns; the sixth and last campaign is in isnide the GoAmazon campaign. CHUVA's main scientific motivation is to contribute to the understanding of cloud processes, which represent one of the least understood components of the weather and climate system. CHUVA Project – The GoAmazon Campaign X Band radar – all data available in CHUVA database (web access) – UF format volscan and RHI and level 1 – attenuation correction Radar Strategy for First IOP The X-Band radar scanning strategy for the Manaus campaign will produce one volume scan with 15 elevations (varying from 0.5 to 30 degrees), 7 elevation scans and 1 azimuth scan. All the scans is within a 10 minute window. a) The 15 elevations in the volume scan provide a detailed tri-dimensional look of the weather system structures. Precipitation and reflectivity CAPPIs is derived from this volume and is available at real time on the CHUVA experiment web page. b) 6 fixed-azimuth elevation scans will be performed, starting at 200 degrees and ending at 350 degrees, with an interval of 30 degrees, with a range of 180 degrees in elevation, as pictured below. This 200 degree orientation angle is necessary since our main instrumentation site is located 10 km and 200 degrees from the T3 site. c) The azimuth scan will be used to check the ZDR offset, since the antenna will be pointedal most vertically (89 degrees). Second IOP – Proposal to run the same strategy, but special scan will be perfomed during flight and important weather situation.
