The most investigated phenomenon is coral bleaching, the loss of zooxanthellae algaeliving in symbiosis with coral reefs, which is the result of natural (climatic changes) and/or anthropic causes. This work aims at identifying spectral patterns of coral reefs on different stages of health (healthy, bleached and dead),and use this data as an environmental monitoring tool through remote sensing and image processing. We here present some results from the endemicMussismiliabrasiliensis, a species quite important in the formation of coral reefs in Bahia. Measurements from healthy and bleached individuals kept in aquaria were taken using FieldSpec® 3 Hi-Res Portable Spectroradiometer (450-2500nm) / A100590, and analyzed with the software ENVI 4.7 for the transformation of the spectra in graphical signatures. The analysis of the graphics display differences in the characterization of the reflectance patterns on the investigated health stages. The spectra of dead M.brasiliensis(0.65-0.70) display high reflectance typical of white bodies, whereas the other stages have low reflectance (0.20-0.30) in the visible range. Within this range the dead coral reef ascendsfrom 0.3 to 0.7in a relatively regular way, whereas in bleached and healthy coral reefs there are variations between 0.05 and 0.30 in the form of two peaks, separating bleached and healthy coral reefs in a third feature below 500 nmin the form of absorption and reflection peaks respectively. When comparing individuals within its health stages there is is a noticeable spectral pattern that apparently defines their signature, however it should be noted that still there is not a data set statistically sufficient for their determination.
