ALTERITE IS THE STAR
ON OPENING DAY
Lot 188 Alterite (Literato), who was bought for
€1,100,000 by Emmanuel de Seroux (Narvick International)
The sales caravan continued on from Tattersalls to its
French destination of Deauville for the final European sale
of the year, the Arqana Deauville December Breeding
Stock Sale. The sales complex was packed throughout
the day, with major buyers from all four corners of the
world present. The day started with modest enough trade,
but things really got going after nightfall, with the top price
changing frequently from one lot to the next.
There is always a buzz around the ring when the top lot
is knocked down, but the atmosphere was tenser than
normal after the hammer dropped for Lot 188 Alterite
(Literato) at €1,100,000. The four-year-old Gr.1-winning
filly, who was consigned by Haras des Capucines, was
knocked down to Shadai Farm, but there was confusion
over the final bid and, after much discussion, the buyer
was officially noted as Narvick International, who was the
original underbidder. Emmanuel de Seroux explained “The
filly has been bought by Northern Farm. She is a real star
and she was the mare of the sale for us. She had a lot of
quality as a racehorse and she will now be retired to Japan
as a broodmare. There is a good chance she will be
covered by Deep Impact, but that is a decision my clients
will make themselves.” Alterite was second in the Gr.1 Prix
Saint-Alary and third in the Gr.1 Prix Marcel Boussac for
Jean-Claude Rouget before being exported to the States,
where she was trained by Chad Brown to win the Gr.1
Garden City Stakes and finish third in the Gr.1 Breeders’
Cup Filly and Mare Turf.
Out of Ana Luna (Dream Well), she comes from the

was fourth in the Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches. Via
Medici was sold in foal to Dansili, a filly from the same
cross having been sold this year as a yearling for
€260,000. She also produced a Lawman filly this year,
who was withdrawn from this sale. “This mare had
everything going for her,” said de Seroux “She was one of
my favourite mares and, after being underbidder on Lot
167 [Skia (Motivator) in foal to Leroidesanimaux for
€320,000], I am very happy to get this one.”
Pierre-Yves Bureau, racing manager for the Wertheimer
brothers, purchased Lot 201 Blarney Stone (Peintre
Celebre), a half-sister to the Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des
Pouliches winner Beauty Parlour (Deep Impact), from
Haras du Bois Roussel, for €725,000, with Badger
Bloodstock once again underbidders. The three-year-old
filly won once and was placed three times in five starts this
year for Alain de Royer Dupre. Bureau commented “This
filly is from a very nice Wildenstein family and it is not
often that one like her comes on the market.” She is out of
the Listed winner and Gr.3-placed Bastet (Giant’s
Causeway), who is also the dam of Barocci (Deep
Impact), who won the Listed Prix Omnium II and was
placed at Gr.2 and Gr.3 level. The Wertheimer brothers
also bought Lot 171 Abys (Montjeu), from Chantillybased Swedish trainer Pia Brandt, for €450,000. The fouryear-old filly won twice and was placed six times from nine
starts, including twice at Listed level in France and
Germany. Abys is a full-sister to the Gr.1 Prix Ganay
winner and sire Corre Caminos and the Gr.1 Criterium de
Saint-Cloud winner and siren Recital, as well as being a
half-sister to the multiple Group winner and sire Racinger

Narvick International also purchased Lot 172 Via

(Spectrum). “This is a filly from a top-class family with
good form on the track. She is worth that price as a blacktype daughter of Montjeu. We will take both of these fillies
home before any plans are made about their futures.”
Lot 204, the Aga Khan Stud’s Behkara (Kris) was
bought by Hugo Lascelles for €700,000. Out of the Gr.1
winning Champion Three-Year-Old Behera (Mill Reef),
she was a Gr.2 winner and Gr.1-placed during her racing
career. Now 14, she was sold in foal to Declaration Of
War and has already produced black-type winners in the
Gr.1 Grand Prix de Paris winner Behkabad (Cape Cross),
Beheshtam (Peintre Celebre) and the Listed Prix Turenne
winner Behesht (Sea The Stars), who was subsequently
sold for €525,000 at this company’s Vente de l’Arc in
October. “I have bought her for an owner-breeder in the
UK,” commented Lascelles. “She is from a great family
and we hope she will produce a few fillies for us to race in
the future. We are very happy to have got her. She made
exactly what I predicted we would have to pay for her,
which is no surprise, as the market is very strong here.”
Lot 175 Zotilla (Zamindar), a half-sister to the dual Gr.1
winner Flotilla (Mizzen Mast), was bought by the One
Agency for €550,000. David Redvers, who did the bidding
and saw off competition from underbidder Badger
Bloodstock, explained “I have bought her for a new
partnership between Lordship Stud and Ecurie des
Monceaux. She will remain at the latter in the future and she
will most likely be covered by Invincible Spirit. She has a
very commercial pedigree, is a lovely walker and has a lot
of potential as a broodmare. She is beautiful and for me she
was the standout mare of the year.” This three-year-old filly

was consigned by trainer Alain de Royer Dupré, for whom
she was placed this year on her only start. She is out of the
Gr.3 Miesque Stakes and Listed winner Louvain (Sinndar),
who is also the dam of Louvakhova (Maria’s Mon), a
winner at Listed level in the USA.
The day was marked by numerous buybacks among the
top lots, including Lot 196 Samba Brazil (Teofilo) and
Lot 181 Xcellence (Champs Elysees) at €1,500,000 and
€950,000 respectively. Other notable buybacks included
Lot 150 Hideaway Heroine (Hernando) at €280,000, Lot
180 Ascot Family (Desert Style) at €260,000 and Lot
170 Harem Lady (Teofilo) for €240,000.
The top-priced foal was Lot 65, a daughter of Oasis
Dream consigned by Haras du Petit Tellier and bought by
Stauffenberg Bloodstock for €290,000. The filly is out of
Ana Marie (Anabaa), who won the Gr.2 Prix d’Harcourt
and was placed in the Gr.1 Nassau Stakes, Gr.1 Prix
Vermeille and Gr.1 Prix de Diane. She has produced two
winners from six progeny of racing age, including the
Listed Prix Casimir Delamare winner and Gr.1-placed Ana
Americana (American Post), who was subsequently sold
to Katsumi Yoshida for €300,000. Philipp Graf von
Stauffenberg explained, “This was the best foal of the sale
for me. I went over my limit in order to get her. She will
now go to the stud, but it is possible that she could go
through the ring again next year.”
Bertrand Le Metayer purchased Lot 118, a daughter of
Henrythenavigator from Haras d’Ombreville, for
€155,000 on behalf of Haras de la Perelle. “This filly was
very impressive for a first foal,” commented LeMetayer.
“Her dam won Stakes races from two to four years of age

and it is a very tough family.” The foal is out of the fivetime winning mare Elle Shadow (Shamardal), a multiple
Gr.3 winner and twice placed at Gr.1 level in Germany. The
second dam is Elle Danzig (Roi Danzig), who was a
Champion in Germany at three, four and five years.
HOYEAU’S COMMENT
Arqana President Eric Hoyeau commented at the end of
the session “The median of €71,000 for today’s session is

MORIARTY HITS THE BIG TIME
IN KINGSTON TOWN
SHOWBOY SHOWCASES HIS
SIRE’S TALENTS
Irish-bred Moriarty, who won the Gr.3 Craven Plate in
October, stepped up to take his first win at the highest
level when landing the Gr.1 Kingston Town Classic, the
feature race at Ascot yesterday. The son of Clodovil
finished strongly to beat Disposition (Reset) by the
narrowest of margins, with Elite Belle (Canny Lad) two
and a quarter lengths back in third.
Moriarty has now won eleven times, his other Group
victories coming in the 2013 Gr.2 Brisbane Cup, the Gr.2
Barcardi Hills Stakes and the Gr.2 Eagle Farm Cup.
Bred by Rathasker Stud, where his sire stands, he is thrice
a Tattersalls graduate, most recently when bought at the
company’s Autumn Horses in Training Sale for 90,000gns by
his trainer Chris Waller. He is out of Justice System
(Criminal Type), a half-sister to the Gr.2 (then) Prince of
Wales’s Stakes winner and sire Lear Spear (Lear Fan).
Talented sprinter Big Money recaptured his best form with
a vengeance at Doomben yesterday cruising clear to win the
Gr.3 George Moore Stakes.
Trained at Scone by Rod Northam, the son of Choisir was
a bit below par in two unplaced runs in Melbourne during the
spring, but bounced back to win the 1200m sprint by a
length and a quarter.
A A$75,000 Inglis Scone Yearling Sale purchase from the
Middlebrook Valley Lodge draft, he has won eight races and
been second four times from 14 starts earning A$481,160 in
prizemoney.
Big Money will now head towards the Listed Lough Neagh
Stakes at Doomben on 20th December with a view to races
like the Gr.1 Doomben 10,000 and the Gr.1 Stradbroke
Handicap during the Winter Carnival.
Bred by Phil Gunter, who shares in his ownership, he is the
third and final foal of Lyn’s Money (Humam), who died in
2009. A good metropolitan winner of eight races and over
A$160,000 in prizemoney, she comes from the family of
Perth stakes-winner Lynsted Lad.
Whitsbury Manor Stud’s successful Northern Hemisphere
first season sire celebrated his first Southern Hemisphere
Group winner when Showboy, also his first winner in New
Zealand, took the Gr.2 Wakefield Challenge Stakes at
Trentham, just a day after Hardline became his first ever
winner in the Antipodes when scoring on his debut at
Doomben in Australia on Friday.
The chesnut two-year-old colt broke smartly and was
always prominently placed, before staying on well to beat
Serena Miss, a daughter of Iffraaj, who, like Showcasing,
is based at Haunui Farm while on shuttle duty.
Bred by Haunui Farm and a New Zealand Bloodstock
Festival Sale graduate, he is out of Shades Of Silk
(Thunder Gulch), a half-sister to the Gr.3 Craven Plate
winner The Man (Dehere). Their dam Lycra (Tights), won
the Gr.1 Ellerslie Sires’ Produce Stakes and the Gr.1
Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes.
Showcasing’s Northern Hemisphere first crop Stakes
winners include the Gr.2 Mill Reef Stakes winner
Toocoolforschool, the Gr.3 Round Tower Sakes winner
Cappella Sansevero and the Listed Harry Rosebery
Stakes winner Accipiter.
Priced at £15,000 for 2015, he is already fully booked.

contention two fences out – the Pond Fence was omitted –
before taking the lead approaching the last. He stayed on
strongly to the line and, although Somersby (Second

NATIONAL HUNT RACING REVIEW
for the Henry VIII winner Vibrato Valtat (Voix Du Nord).
The race was marred by the fatal fall of the triple Gr.1
winner Oscar Whisky (Oscar).
The winner, who won the Gr.2 Sharp Novices’ Hurdle in
2012, failed to build on that promise the following season,
but has turned the corner since becoming a chaser,
winning four of his eight starts, including the Gr.2
November Novices’ Chase and the Gr.2 Wayward Novices’
Chase last year, as well as finishing fourth at the
Cheltenham Festival in the Gr.1 Arkle Challenge Trophy.
Following his win, he was given a quote of 12/1 for the Gr.1
Queen Mother Champion Chase.
Bred by Frankie Dettori and a Tattersalls graduate, he is
out of the unraced Kris S mare Nova Cyngi, a half-sister
to the Listed (then) Prix Imprudence winner Onda Nova
(Keos) and to the dam of the Gr.1 Oaks winner Light Shift
(Kingmambo) and the Champion Older Mare Shiva
(Hector Protector), from the family of the recent Gr.1
Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Main Sequence (Aldebaran).
Vibrato Valtat gained his first win at the highest level
when taking the Gr.1 Henry VIII Novices’ Chase on the
same card. The five-year-old grey son of Voix Du Nord
looked under pressure two furlongs out, as Dunraven
Storm (Presenting) and Irish Saint (Saint Des Saints)
settled down to battle it out two fences from home. After
the last, Vibrato Valtat made headway to join the leaders
and, though he hung badly left, cannoning into his rivals
when unbalanced, he soon took the lead and ran on well
to win by two lengths from Dunraven Storm, who had
beaten Vibrato Valtat three weeks ago at Cheltenham in
the Gr.2 November Novices’ Chase.
The winner of the Listed Plymouth Novices’ Chase in
February, he has now won four times since leaving France
for Nicholls. He may run next in the Gr.2 Wayward Lad
Novices’ Chase at Kempton Park and has the Gr.1 Arkle
Challenge Trophy at the Cheltenham Festival as his longterm target.
Bred by Colette and Aude-Marie Duperret, he is the star
of his AQPS family. His dam La Tosca Valtat (Dom Alco),
a winner over hurdles, as well as being placed on the flat
and over fences, is a full-sister to the winners Melodie
Valtat and Recital Valtat and a half-sister to the winner
Tango Valtat (Assessor), out of the unraced Elegie De
Valtat (Kedellic).
The talented, but enigmatic Snake Eyes got the better
of his rivals to run out the comfortable winner of the Listed
December Handicap Hurdle. The six-year-old chased the
leaders approaching the last flight and was ridden to take
the lead in the closing stages to win his first race from six
starts and completing a Stakes double for his sire Oscar,
who also sired the veteran Oscar Time, winner of the Gr.3
Becher Chase.
Bred by Aidan Aherne and twice a Tattersalls graduate,
he is out of the Gr.2 (then) Thyestes Handicap Chase winer
Be My Belle (Be My Native), a half-sister to the Gr.2
Lismullen Hurdle winner Rose Of Inchiquin (Roselier;
dam of the Gr.3 EBF Novice Handicap Chase winner
Panther Claw and the Listed novice hurdle winner
Empire Of Dirt).
AINTREE
Veteran Oscar Time made history when becoming the
oldest horse to win the Gr.3 Becher Handicap Chase, the
feature race at Aintree, which attracted a bigger than
average field of 25, at the tender age of 13. The grey Our
Father (Shantou) looked to have victory in the bag when
he surged clear around the home bend, but he was
headed after the last by the son of Oscar, who despite
pecking slightly on landing, began to forge clear. He was
chased all the way to the line by Mendip Express (King’s
Theatre).
Both horse and jockey Sam Waley-Cohen have an
excellent record over the Grand National fences and the
pair finished second and fourth in National Hunt racing’s
premier event in 2011 and 2013.
Bred by Edmond Coleman, and both a Tattersalls Ireland
and Goffs graduate, he is is out of a half-sister to the illfated Gr.3 Stayers Novice Hurdle-second Trevino (Be My
Native). His grandam Phenic (Menelek) was a Listedwinning hurdler and a half-sister to the top-class
hurdler/chaser Golden Friend (Deep Run).
The Listed Fillies’ Juvenile Hurdle went to the
progressive Nyanza. The diminutive three-year-old
daughter of Dai Jin made her challenge after the second
last flight, before jumping more cleanly than her rival
Intense Tango (Mastercraftsman) and, though she hung
towards the stands’ side on the flat, slightly hampering her
rival, she kept on to win her first Stakes race by a length
and a half from Intense Tango.
Twice a winner on the flat at Kempton Park this season,
she has now won two of her three starts over timber.
Bred by Gestut Ebbesloh and a BBAG graduate, she is
a half-sister to the Listed Kolner Zweijahrigen Trophy
winner Nouvelle Neige (Big Shuffle) out of the Listed
Frankfurter der Mehl Mulhens winner Nouvelle Fortune
(Alzao), from a family which includes the Gr.3 winners
Nouvelle Noblisse (Singspiel) and the Gr.3 Preis der
Dortmunder Wirtschaft winner Norderney (Dai Jin).

The winner of a Gr.3 handicap chase at Cheltenham last
month, Sam Winner was on target again when taking the
Listed chase at Aintree. The seven-year-old son of
Okawango made all the running and always had enough
in hand to hold off the challenge of his two other rivals
Medermit (Medaaly) and Ma Filleule (Turgeon),
following the exit of Holywell (Gold Well), who parted
company with his jockey Ritchie McLernon some way out.
Sam Winner has now won six of his 25 starts and holds
a number of entries for later this month, including a Gr.3
chase at Cheltenham, the Gr.3 Welsh National and the Gr.1
Lexus Chase, with his long-term target being the Gr.3
Grand National.
Bred by Ecurie Winning and a €5,000 Arqana graduate,
he is a son of the winning Night Shift mare Noche, who
was bred by the Spaniards Cuadra Asturias. The dam of
four other winners, she is a daughter of the high-class
Spanish mare Villa Bianca (Rheffissimo), winner of the
Copa de S M El Rey, second in both Spanish fillies’
Classics of 1987 and a half-sister to two other Spanish
Listed winners in Le Pont D’Asson (Frisco) and
Berthalay (Sotogrande).

KODIAC BREAKS TWO-YEAR-OLD
WINNERS’ RECORD
Cry No More, a two-year-old son of Kodiac, became his
sire’s 43rd individual two-year-old winner of 2014, when
winning at Taby in Sweden recently for trainer Catharina
Vang.
In winning, he enabled his sire to set a new European
record for individual two-year-old winners sired in a
season, breaking a record which was previously held by
his half-brother Invincible Spirit.
From five crops of two-year-olds racing, he has sired a
total of 136 individual juvenile winners to date.

ARQANA NOMINATIONS AUCTION
ARQANA NOMINATIONS AUCTION
[Left to Right] Alain Jathiere, who paid €28,000 for a nomination to Haras de La Cauviniere’s Le Havre, donated by
Gerard Augustin Normand; Guy Pariente, who with the Kendargent Syndicate, bought a covering to Maxios, donated by
Flaxman Stables for €12,000 and Lady Chryss O’Reilly and Henri Bozo, who secured a nomination to Haras de
Bouquetot-based Olympic Glory, donated by Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, for €22,000
The Nominations Auction, which was organised by Arqana on behalf of “Sauvegarde des Terres d'Elevage’, raised more
than €300,000 in aid of the continuing fight to preserve the breeding region of Nonant-le-Pin, which is being threatened by
a toxic waste landfill.
Eric Puerari, President of the Association, thanked the generous participants of the sale, as well as its equally generous
donators: “All of the support that we have received from the horseracing community since the beginning of these terrible
events, has reassured us and pushed us onwards and upwards. For many of the professionals in the region, this is the
battle of a lifetime; indeed, 160 stud farms and training centres are directly under threat, within a 15 km radius of the landfill
project. More battles need to be won in 2015 and this is why we are reaching out to our community again this year. Indeed,
we fight alongside a dedicated team of lawyers, lobbyists and environmental specialists, the quality of whose services
comes at a price. We remain as convinced and dedicated as ever to the resolution of this conflict”.
Nominations were donated by most of the prominent stallion farms and the list featured stallions such Lope De Vega,
Le Havre, Kingman and Dawn Approach. Notable purchases from the auction included a nomination to Siyouni, which
was purchased by Tim Richardson for Merry Fox Stud for €40,000, double his official stud fee for 2015.

There were back-to-back victories in this race for Shuka,
the best of eleven Stakes winners sired by the 2004 Gr.1
Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Bachelor Duke (Miswaki).
Nashville (Darci Brahma) got to a narrow lead halfway

to claim the prize with Nashville dead-heating for second
with Puccini (Encosta De Lago).
Raced by Eric and Wendy Parr, Shuka has kept the best

Champion Majmu filled in the only remaining blank on her
already impressive CV – a Gr.1 victory – and could not
have been more impressive when carrying Sheikh
Hamdan’s colours to a majestic victory in this Kenilworth
Classic.
Mike de Kock’s charge arrived in Cape Town with a lofty
reputation and, as few pundits expected her to get beaten,
she was backed to the exclusion of her rivals, starting
deep in the red. Always travelling sweetly on the rail, the
imposing grey tracked stable companion and pacemaker
Ataab (Flying Spur) and, when given her head by jockey
Anthony Delpech, surged into the lead at the top of the
straight. Untroubled and unharassed, she set sail for home
and powered home to win geared down.
Undefeated in three starts at two, all at Stakes level, the
grey was a somewhat controversial choice as the
country’s Equus champion juvenile filly, not having won a
Gr.1. That said, she first showed the cut of her jib in Stakes
company by claiming the Listed Ruffian Stakes on her
debut, followed up in the Gr.3 Pretty Polly Stakes and
made it three out of three when destroying her rivals by
almost nine lengths in the Gr.2 SA Fillies Nursery.
Six months later, her seasonal debut in the Gr.2 Gr.2
Joburg Fillies & Mares Challenge proved disastrous, with
jockey S’manga Khumalo having one of those rides he
would rather forget. Majmu ran into all sorts of traffic
problems in the straight and only found a way out when it
was too late, finishing fourth, just a length and a half off
the winner. That proved a temporary setback and she

promptly regained the winning thread with a superimpressive effort in last month’s Gr.3 Starling Stakes,
scoring in a time almost a second faster than that
recorded by Champion Harry’s Son in the colt’s
equivalent.
The sky is clearly the limit for the Australian-bred, who
joined the millionaire ranks with this latest victory, her first
over a mile. While either the Paddock Stakes or even the
J&B Met could be her next target, the star filly is destined
for export, according to De Kock, who remarked: “I think
she is well capable of winning a Gr.1 race overseas.”
One of a number of Shadwell purchases at the 2013
Inglis Australian Easter Sale, Majmu is the latest top level
winner for champion Australian sire Redoute’s Choice and
is the only filly amongst three foals out of the Chilean Gr.1
winner Spontaneous, a three-parts sister in blood to the
Gr.1 Chilean 2,000 Guineas-third Champ De Mars. Sadly,
the mare died in September of last year.

The homebred Duc Del Rose (Siyouni) has been on the

first win after six places from seven starts. He fought
bravely when challenged by Sole Di Pio (Gladiatorus),
another who looks close to losing his maiden tag. Duc Del
Rose is the second foal and winner out of Jolly Good
(Compton Place), who landed three wins at two over
1000m. The second dam Runs In The Family (Distant
Relative) won four races over short trips and delivered
two other winners. The third dam Stoneydale (Tickled

Partyallnightlong (Colossus), placed twice on his four

Allevamento, a valuable handicap for fillies and mares, and
seven other wins. Their dam Canazzei (Hernando) failed to
reach the racecourse but delivered four other winners. The
second dam La Belle Creole (Rainbow Quest) foaled the
Stakes-placed Martino Creolo (Martino Alonso) and is a
half-sister to Polish Patriot (Danzig), who capped his
racing career when winning the Gr.1 July Cup. The third dam
Maria Waleska (Filiberto) was a Champion in Italy: she won
