The state of Rio de Janeiro blooms with attractions, most
within a two-hour drive of the state capital. Resorts, bays,
islands and intimate sandy beaches punctuate the south
coast of Rio.
In this area, called the Green Coast, nestles Angra dos Reis,
which is located 150 km away from Rio de Janeiro.
After the Brazilian coast was officially discovered by the
Portuguese navigator Pedro Alvares Cabral in 1500, the
Portuguese crown sent to Brazil a naval fleet composed by
three ships to draw a map and exploit the new discovered
continent. The colonizers that were already impressed by
the beauty of the Guanabara Bay got even more impressed
afterwards.
The naval fleet commanded by The Portuguese navigator
Gaspar de Lemos got at The Long Island (Ilha Grande) in
January the 6th 1502. It was “Kings’ day” and because
of this special date the place was named “Kings’ Creek”
- Angra dos Reis.
Like many Brazilian colonial cities, Angra dos Reis was
deeply influenced by the catholic church. In a small area it
is possible to find a great number of convents, churches
and monuments, even at the little islands, which is very
charming. As an example we have The Senhor do Bonfim,
The Santana and Piedade Churches.
The downtown Angra was built in curves, following the
wind that blows all day. Besides the churches there is little
left from the old colonial style.
In Angra bay, there are more than 350 islands and more
than 2000 beaches.
The largest, Ilha Grande, is among Brazil’s most beautiful,
with a nature reserve and stunning beaches. It has 193
km squares of beauty and 106 beaches, waterfalls and
mountains. The old jail house of “Dois Rios” (Two Rivers)
allowed the tourist exploitation to be slow and controlled,
keeping nature untouched. As The jail house was
extinguished, the number of tourists grew and with it grew
a structure of inns, bars, etc to provide comfort to the
foreigners. The Abraão Village is the main urban nucleons
full of inns, restaurants, bars and handcraft shops. There
are walking tracks through the forest that lead to the
beaches, waterfalls, and historical monuments like the
aqueduct and the old leprosarium of the Black Beach. The
most famous beach is Lopes Mendes, the first one on the
south extreme facing the open sea, good for sports like
surfing and windsurfing. Still on the south extreme there
is the South Beach a biological reserve created during the
seventies when the island became a Federal Park.
Angra dos Reis versatile geography allows a great variety
of sports: Biking, fishing, paragliding, surf, diving, skiing,
rafting, sailing. This paradise also offers tranquil emerald
green waters, lovely homes of the rich and famous,
fantastic architecture hidden behind dense foliage and the
Serra do Mar as a background.
