Class Descriptions Monday, July 25 All Day Session (s) 1. Strand 4: Reading Essential Skills in Reading Impact on Teaching and Learning K-12 This training offers instruction on how districts can create a K-12 reading assessment system based on Oregon’s K-12 Literacy Framework and research-based practices. Common Core State Standards for Administrators Administrators Learn about the CCSS and how to support and guide your teachers with implementation. EasyCBM – Intro K-12 Are you interested in learning about EasyCBM, an on-line benchmarking and progress monitoring system for math and reading? Is your district, school, or staff already using Easy CBM and would like to learn more about it? Easy CBM "101" and "201" -- a general overview of math and reading screening and progress monitoring assessments as well as how to get the most out of the district version of Easy CBM. SMART Boards (Beginners) K-12 SMART Boards provide a classroom level instructional surface that interfaces computer projection and a connected writing surface. What it is, how it works and applications will be demonstrated. Participants will have a chance to use the technology. There will also be a demonstration on SynchronEyes, classroom management software that allows the teacher to view every computer in a networked classroom from his or her desk! Essential Skills 8-12 teachers and Administrators The session will provide an overview of the requirements of the Essential Skills and the Diploma requirements. Vocabulary Builders with Alice Nine K-12 Vocabulary activities incorporate Use of resources: dictionary, thesaurus Reading within the word: chunking by syllables and morphemes Reading around the word: using context clues Join us and experience easy-to-manage, student-engaging cross-curricular instructional activities that support vocabulary development without word-defining lists. Presenter: Alice Nine 9. The ABCs of RTI K-12 The class is intended to provide the basic knowledge of Response to Intervention (RTI). The key features of a RTI system will be covered. You will see examples from large and small districts around Oregon that have been successful in implementing RTI systems. This class will be helpful for those who work in an RTI system, but have not received an initial training and for those who are interested in developing RTI systems in their districts. Strand 4: Writing Essential Skills in WRITING: K-12 Impact on Teaching and Learning Knowing where students stand in relation to meeting the Essential Skills and benchmarks for the Common Core State Standards (recently adopted by the Oregon State Board of Education) is one of the most valuable tools teachers and administrators have in planning appropriate instruction. The use of benchmark screeners, progress monitoring and scoring guides enables you to meet the learning needs of all students. This session will strengthen your skills in: Determining student progress toward meeting the benchmarks Discussing the implementation of the Common Core State Standards for writing district-wide across grade levels and content areas Adjusting and targeting student instruction in writing. How to Use CIS to Meet Diploma Requirements & Customize CIS for Your School 9-12 CIS is used by many schools to help students successfully meet—and document—the personalized learning requirements. This session is dedicated to training on how to use the administration tools to help your students do just that. Participants in this session will learn how to generate reports on student progress and customize CIS for their schools. Customization includes merging student portfolios, modifying the Career-Related Learning Experiences (CRLEs) templates, and uploading course listings and pathways into a six-year course planner. Participants at this session will also work with the personalization tools in CIS. Please make sure to bring your staff or Site Coordinator access codes if you wish to customize your own school’s version of CIS. Demonstration accounts will be available and implementation examples from a variety of school districts will be shared. Presenter: Laura McCoid 12. 504 An update on the 504 manual and changes that will take place. K-12 Winston Cornwall, ODE 13. OdysseyWare Basics and Special Features 6-12 This session gives new users an overview of OW, discusses implementation considerations and provides basic understanding of user based permissions. Attendees will learn basic set-up of their OdysseyWare site including weighting, thresholds and global permissions. They will learn basic navigation related to adding teachers and students, assigning courses and how to edit data, how to add students, assigning courses, monitoring daily assignments, grading, and reports. The messaging and feedback features will be discussed. A demonstration of the Student mode is provided to ensure they are ready to answer questions. Special Features – This session discusses why to use custom courses, importance of planning and a basic understanding of system navigation. The trainer will provide a demonstration of building custom courses, custom assignments and assigning custom courses. Administrators/Teachers will learn how to use OdysseyWare Diagnostic tools to improve student and school success. CIS Assessments 9-12 CIS has a number of assessments that you can use with your students. This session will focus on two popular CIS assessments, SKILLS and Occupation Sort. SKILLS helps students identify the skills that are authentic to their experiences, increases their sense of self-efficacy, and helps them better articulate how their skills relate to school and their workplace. Occupation Sort helps teach decision-making skills, and learn about labor market factors. This session will involve group interaction: come ready to share your experiences, play a few games, and find out how career tools can help students succeed. Presenter: Laura McCoid Page -3- 15. Efficient and Effective Data Teams: Teachers and Administrators Learn some tips, tricks and tools to help your DATA teams/PLCs run more effectively and efficiently. Common Core State Standards for Teachers K-12 Learn about the CCSS for Mathematics and what it means for you. Learn about currently developed resources and what is to come. Presenter: Mark Freed, Math Specialist, ODE 18. OdysseyWare 2.0 and Successful Implementation of OdysseyWare This session will discuss OdysseyWare’s newest version released just 4 months ago. This version contains updated features, reports, and options that until recently were not available in OdysseyWare. A detailed demonstration of the new version, and how to convert from the current OdysseyWare curriculum to the newest and best OdysseyWare available will be addressed. Successful Implementation of OdysseyWare – This session will focus on how districts are getting the most from OdysseyWare. There are over 30 common uses for OdysseyWare across Oregon, and many districts are only aware of a few. We will also teach attendees how to become part of the 86% of districts that are using OdysseyWare to increase district funding and improve their budgets. Alice Nine Sentences Under Construction K-12 The simple declarative sentence is the building block of all composition. Teaches kinds of sentences with multi-sensory anchor lessons and anchor charts– Declarative, Interrogative, Imperative, and Exclamatory sentences Simple, Compound, Complex, and Compound-complex sentences Sentences with transitive, linking, and intransitive verbs Moves instruction beyond worksheet sentence writing Create anchor charts Presenter: Alice Nine Page -4- 21. Advanced RIGHT RESPONSE Re-Certification Training K-12 If you have been certified in Advanced RIGHT RESPONSE restraint techniques and need re-certification, this is the course for you. This workshop will be a full day review of tools to help you successfully manage aggression or behavioral challenges and help you prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. Bringing Literature Alive Through Projects 6-12 This class will hopefully give you some great ideas on how to excite students about what they are reading, introduce you to some new titles, help you create fun projects for your students and hand you a few strategies you can use with any novel a student selects. Resources for Common Core State Standards Implementation K-12 This session will provide information on the mathematics and ELA crosswalk and tools and resources for teachers to use in the classroom to implement the Common Core State Standards. Tools for Data Driven Decision Making K-12 Teachers and Administrators This session will focus on the tools used for implementation during the Oregon DATA Project. Whole Brain Teaching K-12 Whole-brain teaching/is an instructional approach derived from neurolinguistic descriptions of the functions of the brains left and right hemispheres. In whole-brain teaching/learning, imaging is used as the basis for initial comprehension as kinesthetic and connections to memory are built. Techniques encourage students to access brain resources all at once by engaging 7 of the 8 intelligence (Howard Gardner). Particular focus will be spent on: memory, attention, focus, and speed. Classroom procedures for optimal learning are built in. It time permits, the class will include spatial reasoning, problem solving, and dealing with challenging students. Excel 2007 K-12 This workshop will be a beginning to intermediate instruction on creating a variety of spreadsheets in Excel 2007. Some knowledge of Excel in general is welcome but not required. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) K-12 The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1 in 110 children have an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Autism affects children regardless of their race, social status, or ethnicity. As public school teachers, we are facing more and more children that acquire a medial and/or education eligibility of ASD in grades K-12. It is ascensional that, we, as educators, stay up to date on evidence based strategies for working with individuals with Autism and how to implement those strategies into our everyday teaching. Page -8- This class will review the National Standards report, by the National autism center, one evidence based practices that fall in the established and emerging categories. Sheltering Writing Instruction K-12 Many times we as teachers ask students to do things with language they're not able to do. In this class teachers will come to understand the relationship between the language demands of an assignment, or writing prompt and the functions and forms that students must have in place in order to successfully address those demands. Teachers will leave with tools and tips for sheltering instruction in any content area. Presenter: Mollie-Nelson-Weiss, Ontario School District 43. Education of Homeless Children & Youth for All Districts Administrators This workshop will provide information on the mandatory requirements of the Title X Homeless Education Program that apply to all districts. The duties of the Homeless Liaison and the responsibilities of districts for identification, enrollment, and transportation will be presented, along with suggestions for local collaborations that can assist your program. Potential changes under the reauthorization will be discussed, along with an update on data collection changes that are forthcoming for all distorts. Presenter: Dona Bolt, ODE 44. Got Questions? Working Together for the Education of Homeless Children & Youth K-12 and Partners This session is intended for district liaisons and community agencies and partners to find out how best to collaborate and work together to meet the needs of homeless children in our area. Find out what other regions are doing. 49. A Closer Look at CCSSM K-12 Dive deeper into the newly adopted Common Core State Standards in Mathematics.
