Thesis Title:
Nanostructured films of metal oxides with direct wide band-gap for the engineering of
photocatalytic reactors
Abstract:
The degradation of organic pollutants in water, by means of irradiating aqueous suspensions
of titanium dioxide, has known a rapid growth in interest from both fundamental and
applied areas. This is due to the fast development of the photochemical technologies in
what concerns radiation sources and photochemical reactors. Photocatalytic reaction
engineering is now an important domain of the classical reaction engineering discipline. The
deposition of photoactive films (based on semiconductor materials) on the internal surfaces
of the photoreactors is gaining more importance due to the increased control on the
preparation of such materials.
The main goal of my work seeks to use n-type oxide semiconductor material with a direct
wide band-gap (3.3 eV) in developing a thin and robust semiconductor photocatalyst film,
bounded to a glassy or other support to be used for photocatalytic water treatment.
