Marie-José van Beckhoven, 2013 © papel cartão pétalas de flores 16 paper board flower petals O ensaio completo, intitulado "As imagens buscam espaço", será brevemente publicado em www.amiebo.eu. 5 15 3 Annemie Bogaerts Roundabout Annemie Bogaerts makes installations, graphic work and objects. Bronze, natural materials such as seeds, sand, wood and paper are the materials. Some objects measure just a few centimeters, while her largest installations encompass more than 500 square meters. She generally applies local materials and interacts with the space. Annemie Bogaerts´ work is highly intriguing. Although the forms are simple, clear and serene, the spectator is left with lots of questions: why this choice of materials? What is her concept, her message, her goal? What kind of person is she? How does she work? 2012 Perfect harmony and a meticulously thought-out concept are the first impression. Yet, when starting the layout of a new work, the artist has only a vague and general idea of what she intends to achieve. She works in an associative manner: space, materials and her own feelings interact and communicate. The combination guides her to the final result. She works like a meditating monk. The process, the commitment and the temporality of the work are important to her. Art historian Marie-José van Beckhoven wrote about the works of Annemie Bogaerts: “[Her work] took me back in time. Back to the early 20th century pioneers of abstract art and their spiritual motivations. Back to the unprecedented manner in which they explored a nonfigurative visual language in order to be able to express the invisible. Sensational and radical, their art was nevertheless part of a centuries-old tradition in which reason and mystery were closely linked. Just like in the Renaissance, when artists and architects drew inspiration from numerical relationships and geometric figures when creating their paintings and designs: the reflection of the divine order and harmony. Palha paus discos de madeira telhas Hay poles wooden disks roof tiles It is not easy to put an aesthetic experience into words, especially since visual art is nonlingual. I believe that the significance of Annemie Bogaerts' installations is not only in the artefact itself, but that it arises in the relationship between the artwork and the space in which it is located. The space influences the design, the form and the choice of materials in the same way in which the installation transforms the atmosphere of the space. It is significant that in the presence of her work, you unconsciously slow down your steps and get silent.” For the Castle of Évoramonte Annemie Bogaerts made a geometrical floor mosaic with marble sand from Estremoz. She decided to make a walkable labyrinth. This labyrinth was not meant as a puzzle to be solved by the visitor. It should be a space where ratio and feelings meet, a place of meditation, an environment that forces the visitor to relate to the present.
