Introduction The Jaguar Corridor aims to find core areas for the conservation of jaguar in the ‘ Serra do Mar’ Mountain range, in the coast of southern Paraná. This is the last (relatively) large refuge for jaguars in the Coastal Atlantic Forest (Dense Ombrophilous Forest), where jaguars have suffered a rapid shrinkage of its historical range (Mazzolli, 2009). To do that, besides relying on information of presence-absence of jaguars, it monitors indicator species based mainly on the composition and distribution of mammalian fauna. This approach is a mix of innovative ecological procedures applied to conservation, among them the occupancy method as alternative variable to density (MacKenzie et al., 2002), methods based on indicators of habitat integrity locally developed (Mazzolli, 2005, 2006), and elements of recent global guidelines for detection of areas with high conservation values Value (HCV) (Proforest, 2003). The expeditions have been usually conducted twice a year, since 2006, one of which with recruitment of volunteers and general organization by the English NGO Biosphere Expeditions. This was the 8th expedition. Reports from other expeditions may be found in the web page of Projeto Puma, in the section Download (www.projeto-puma.org). Methods The 2010 expedition, with duration of two weeks, begun in 23th of July with base camp setup, field work from 1st August onwards, and ended in 14th of August. Another expedition in May of the same year had been accomplished by Biosphere Expeditions. Additional, short field trips were conducted in September and October. Base camp was in the cabin of Mr. Simões, in the locality of Canasvieiras and municipality of Guaratuba, reached only by using four wheel drive vehicles. Sampling was done in two areas, in the mountain of Canasvieiras (west to the Saint Hilaire/Lange National Park) and in the RPPN Nhandara, located westward in São José dos Pinhais, property of Mr. Giácomo Clausi, distant 17 km in straight line. The breadth of sampling in each one of the areas varied from 5 to 10 km in width (Fig. 1). Figura 1. General view of the area of interest of the Jaguar Corridor, in the coast of southern Paraná, highlighting in red the areas sampled during 2010. As caminhadas eram geralmente longas e com obstáculos como rios e declividade (Fig. 3) During field sampling 9 camera-traps were installed (Tigrinus, Timbó, Santa Catarina) distributed in 5 main trails within the study area, which were ‘Back of the cabin’, ‘Donkey’, ‘Celso’, ‘Housekeeper 2’, ‘South’, besides a camera-trap installed at the Private Reserve of the Natural Patrimony (RPPN) Nhandara in São José dos Pinhais. Tracktraps were also built and systematically checked along these trails. The study area in Canasvieiras was divided in 2x2 km cells, coded individually with a number and a letter, to facilitate treatment of data on species occupancy. Based on this procedure, species identified during the expedition were recorded by cells, as a means to represent the spacialization of the sampling effort at an appropriate scale to the taxonomic group sampled. A map containing those cells was transferred to the navigation GPSs used in the field, which facilitated data acquisition (Fig. 2). Trails were long and had obstacles, such as rivers and broken terrain (Fig. 3). Figura 2. Results Fourteen different species of mammals were recorded (Table 1). The tapir, ocelot, and raccoon, in this order, where the species with higher number of records in different cells. Camera traps worked for a total of 86 days. For our surprise, unlike the past years, we had a large number of equipment stolen from the trails. Five camera-traps and the HD video camera were stolen (attachment 1). Camera-trap output was low, with just a coati been photographically recorded. The video-camera recorded a gray brocket deer. A larger number of records were obtained from tracks (Fig. 6). Nine cells of 2x2km were sampled this year (attachment 2), with an average of two visits to each cell. In total there were seven days of sampling (attachment 3). New this year was the record of a puma behind Base Camp, and of a jaguaroundi down the main road. The howler monkey was also recorded, and considered uncommon in our study site. It is heard only in the far back of the southern trail. During October, one of the participants built a bird list, with 96 species recorded in less than 4 days (attachment 4). Figura 6. Discussion Most obvious results were the larger number of records of tapir and ocelot in different cells. Tapir is very rare in these habitats, as a result of human encroachment and hunting, but are quite common in the study site. Ocelots, differently than tapir, have varied in their occurrence throughout the years, sometimes common to record and sometimes absent. The same happens with the puma, and this year we had chances to record both species. Jaguaroundi deserves a honorable mention, as it is the first time ever recorded in the study site by our crew. It was seen while attempting to cross the main road near the Canasvieiras river. Our attempts to record the jaguar were in vain, even though we used the jaguar caller, and overnighted in the far back of the southern trail during the October survey. It has become more obvious that the area need greater vigilance. During October we’ve witnessed hunters way back in the southern trail bringing an animal that had been illegally shot. Presence of undesirable people in the area was also felt when a considerable number of equipment was stolen from the trails. For future expeditions, a closer integration with environmental agencies should be sought.
