Meeting: Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Christ the King Church Community Hall, 1951 McKinleyville Road, McKinleyville "How Do I Make Them? Let me count the ways!" At our April meeting, we will explore six different methods for making half square triangles (HST). I will demonstrate all the techniques and point out the advantages and disadvantages of each. I will also show how to make HSTs with striped fabric so that the stripes go the way you want. Finally, a Fast Flying Geese method will be shown. Handouts for all techniques will be available at the meeting. April Art Project For our project, you will need to bring a 2B pencil and 1/4 of a yard of PRF fabric prepared for dying. PDF is sold at Ocean Waves Quilts. It does not have to be washed ahead of time. I will have the water soluble wax pencils. They are sold locally at Michaels ($13.99 plus tax) or the Art Center in Arcata. They have 40 colors at $1.99 each. The art project will be approximately 6" x 8" plus you add borders of your choice. The example below was done with colored pencils and I didn't like it. Carol Ann Anderson May Program - Thread Therapy I’m looking forward to presenting my story in quilts on May 28. I began my quilting journey in 1993 and I have enjoyed all the detours. The best times are in sewing groups, which is where I’ve learned the most and why I consider quilting, thread therapy. Hopefully you will see my technique improve over the last 20 years as I relay the memories, lessons and stories my quilts represent to me. Lynne Todoroff March Meeting Thank you, Janet, for providing a wonderful program. Our meeting had a great turn out, and everyone had hands-on experience. Janet put a lot of work into preparing to give us hands-on blocks to follow along. She covered every step in the project of making these wonderful quilts. Brenda and Jean produced our new membership books and membership cards. If you weren’t there, be sure to pick them up next month. Debbie her in her arms. Quilters are such caring and sharing people, and I was so proud to be counted as one of "you" on that beautiful occasion. We really did ourselves and Gayleen proud. Moonstone Quilt Guild covered one whole wall plus our tops filled a circular rack! Thank you again, to each of you. You help make my Community job easier. Now comes our real purpose, the joy of finding homes for each of these treasures. Shar Evans Relay For Life Appreciations Community Quilt News Many thanks to all of you who helped in any small way to create and bind the many quilts from the "stash" of Gayleen Smith. Moonstone Quilting Guild was well represented at the "Tea Party," garden theme of the Redwood Empire Quilt Guild meeting of the first Thursday of April. The walls of the Fair Ground building were covered with colorful quilts from all three of our county guilds. Our Relay For Life Team appreciates and thanks Ocean Wave Quilts, Fortuna Fabrics, Eureka Fabrics, Curves McKinleyville, Precision Intermedia, Blake’s Books, and Boyd’s Sewing & Vacuum for their early support of our fundraiser. More businesses are expected and we will acknowledge them, too! Dianne Mimi Mace, Community Quilt person from Redwood Empire, thinks that it will be possible 350-500 quilts will be shared with the needs of Humboldt County when we have sewn all of Gayleen's beautiful fabric. It was so generous of her husband, John Smith, to share Gayleen's memory with all of us in this way. John was present at the showing, with his camera, to record all the walls of that huge hall covered with the many, many quilts created in his wife’s memory. He plans to share those photos with his two grown sons and their families and especially baby girl Glory. She was born one month before Gayleen's passing, and Gayleen was able to meet Glory and hold Page 2 Block of the Month We hope those of you participating in the BOM are enjoying the blocks, and we would like to congratulate Barbara Branco in the drawing for the "fat quarter." Don't forget to bring your block(s) in for a chance to win. See you April 23rd. Where is Our Guild Going? Our guild needs your help. I have asked repeatedly for people to volunteer for jobs or to tell me what you would like the guild to do. You have chosen to support community quilts and Relay for Life. Our registration covers our current major expenses, and the raffle table supports our other expenses. However, our expenses keep going up. The other guilds have more members, advertising income, and more money. If people don’t donate to the raffle table and buy tickets we may have to increase our registration fee. The raffle table brought in $564 in 2007, $480– $450 in 2008-2011, $280 in 2012, and $185 in 2013. As you can see, the amount is dropping significantly. It is up to you to decide if you want a different way to fund raise – basket sale or white elephant sale, or other supportive activities – but we need your input. Debbie Rae Thank You Tickets Quilt opportunity tickets make a nice “thank you” to anyone who you would like to thank for their kindness or assistance. I have used quilt tickets to thank several folks! In addition to her lecture, she will be conducting workshops on the Friday and Saturday following the lecture. A couple of slots are still open for her “Spools” class. This class is especially recommended for beginning quilters. Contact Kathi Branum at [email protected] for further information if you are interested in participating in this workshop. On The Raffle Table It's wonderful to have flowers blooming at my house. Thanks so much for the floral fabric donations. The raffle table always needs donations. Debbie said she sold out in March. I have something to bring but won't turn down anything you think of that we might use. We made $23.00 last month. Plus we cleaned up - not much left for next month! Carol “Spools” by Laura Nownes Auction Donation Items April and May are the last months we can accept donated items for our Quilt Auction. Please bring your donated items to our guild meeting or call us, and we’ll make arrangements for pick up. We are working on packaging or bundling items now, and would appreciate more quiltrelated items and quilting fabrics. Thank you for supporting our Relay For Life team!
