Biography Helmut Dietrich Born in 1957 in Mellau in Vorarlberg, took his school-leaving exams in 1976 at the Province capital´s Dornbirn/Schoren High School. His interests in architecture subsequently led him to study at the Technical University in Vienna, with its leading educational personality, Ernst Hiesmayr. He already worked regularly, during his studies, with Paolo Piva in Biella, Piemont, and, after graduation, in Piva´s Venice studio. His autonomous furniture design, e.g. for the Murau Workshops, won much recognition and honours. In 1986, Helmut Dietrich founded a studio in Vorarlberg together with Hermann Kaufmann und Christian Lenz. Very short thereafter, he succeeded with a classic of Vorarlberg wood architecture, the Preuss House in Schnepfau (1989). Together with Much Untertrifaller, Helmut Dietrich won a competition for the extension of the Bregenz Festival Opera Hall (1993), the first in a series of large-scale projects to be developed from 1993 in their joint bureau, Dietrich | Untertrifaller Architects, Bregenz. Together they are now doing the new Cityhall in Vienna, they finished the first school in wood with passivhousestandards in Europe “Hauptschule Klaus” and received the foremost architecture award in Austria, the “Clients award 2003” for their museum project “inatura” in Dornbirn, which they designed in cooperation with H. Kaufmann. At the moment the office is working on the project ETH-Sportscenter in Zurich (CH) and on several residential buildings in Switzerland. biografie dietrich.doc Zuletzt gedruckt 14.12.2005 09:33:00 Seite 2 von 2
