Papa Heinz (73) and his brother-in-law Walter (68) have won the holiday
of a lifetime: an exclusive trip for well-off senior citizens – at least that’s
what the brochure says.
The two of them set off with high expectations, but on arrival at their
destination they find themselves being palmed off with sausages on
paper plates instead of the anticipated three-course meal. When Wal_
ter is asked to pay for his beer as well, they realize they must have got
“exclusive” muddled up with “inclusive”! Johanna (40), who is accompanying her great-aunt Finchen, has suspected all along that the so-called luxury weekend is
really nothing but a shady promotional trip. But what exactly is it these senior citizens are
supposed to be buying? That’s the big question. When the tour group discovers a corpse on
top of everything else, Heinz is convinced that they must be caught up in the middle of a
murder conspiracy…
Wonderfully turbulent and funny, as ever. Papa (the secret hero from the bestseller
Holidays with Dad) and Walter are the perfect pair for pandemonium…

to the world. Three of them set out alongside three chosen ones from the
people of the Welsen on a journey to the Twelve Springs. Will they be able
to prevent the looming apocalypse and restore the world’s equilibrium? The element of water
is life-giving, and with every spring that runs dry a facet of humanity will perish…
To The Sources is the opening volume of a high-fantasy literary trilogy which will hold

You will never have met them like this, the Moltke’s and the brothers
Stauffenberg, the Bonhoeffer’s and all the others, who, for any number
of reasons, decided to stand up against Hitler and his inhuman regime. Who We Are is a
singular novel of epic proportions, spanning the years from the German empire, the Weimar
Republic and the Third Reich to the post-war period, and in the course of its more than 2,000
pages, taking the reader from the mansions of imperial Berlin to the bohemian flats of the
Twenties, from the great estates east of the Elbe to the concentration camps of the Nazis. The biographies of these men and women with their manifold connections – be they based on friendship, profession or kinship – is a panorama of people from a huge variety of
backgrounds, with all their facets and deficiencies, their glamour and misery and all of their
dignity; people who gave their lives because they believed in humanity. Based on a six-year-long research and thousands of documents, private letters and
memoirs, the author manages to restore the genuine voices of her protagonists. Sabine Friedrich, born in 1958 in
Coburg, studied German and English in
Munich and gained her PhD in 1989.
Her first novel, “Das Puppenhaus”
was published in 1997, succeeded by
“Familiensilber” in 2005 and “Immerwahr”
in 2007. In 2012, Sabine Friedrich published her comprehensive novel
“Wer wir sind” about the German
resistance, along with a work report
about the development of this novel.

emblematic Berlin building, which housed the Hitler Youth offices after
the Nazis evicted the original Jewish owners. In the aftermath of the

Today, the building has been re-imagined as the hyper-modern Soho House Berlin. Elsa

De-coding the Butterflies
Peter Nauten leads the life of an amiable loner in post-war Germany.
He is forced to accept early on that he’s unlikely to achieve much as
far as acceptable middle-class values are concerned. His classical language studies end in disaster, he soon gets sacked from his position in
an insurance agency, and his marriage fails. But then he gets a job as a
waiter in a trendy Munich café, and dares to embark on the most ambitious challenge of his life: deciphering butterflies – in the hope that
their secret code will finally shed light on the enigmas of the world.
A humorous and poetic parable about a likeable anti-hero,
imbued with a melancholy sense of gravitas.

In a remote village, enclosed by vast forests, a couple of farmers and
their families lead a content and simple life, barely touched by the
ongoings in the world. One day, a seemingly insignificant occurrence
turns the small world of the villagers upside down: a piece of rope
is found on one of the meadows close to the forest, leading into the
woods, and it seems that there is no end to it.

After a quick first foray into the woods, almost all the able-bodied men
of the village decide to follow the rope until the very end. A kafka-esque trip ensues…
This small novella describes the invasion of the unfathomable and chaotic into a
narrow, well-ordered world. It is a gleamingly written parable on the power of the
irrational and on the destructive powers of obsession.

From continental drift to telephone – brilliant inventors frequently
faced a tough initial struggle against their colleagues’ scepticism.
Pioneers of new ideas in science and technology traditionally encountered major frustrations in pitching their ideas and standing up
for them against a conservative establishment. Even the great Albert
Einstein, who never managed to combine his theories of electrodynamics and relativity into an all-encompassing theory, was no stranger to
failure. Yet these prophets of a changing world stuck to their guns with
amazing tenacity.
This book presents the biographies of nine exemplary personalities and their struggle
for success and recognition in a brilliant amalgamation of period atmosphere and
soundly researched information about advances in science and technology.

In the 12th century, a time when women were considered lower-ranking creatures, the Benedictine, prophetess, mystic, poet, musician and
author of herbalist texts Hildegard von Bingen succeeded in becoming
a woman of international renown. Having entered a nunnery in early
childhood, she died in 1179 at the age of 82 as an abbess. In between,
she created an opulent work, she travelled far and wide on pastoral be_
halfs, she preached publicly and upheld correspondences with many
high-ranking people of her time. Hildegard was very religious and creative, but also a politically minded, self-confident and disputatious woman who knew well
which strings to pull.

Michaela Diers, born in Mannheim in
1956, studied German literature and
medieval history in Freiburg.
In autumn 2012, Hildegard von Bingen will be sanctified and also be appointed the
fourth female Doctor of the Church in history.
This book, based on extensive up-to-date research, paints a vivid picture of her life and
work. A chronology, glossary, annotated bibliography and index provide a useful source of
information for students, teachers and other interested readers.

Interviews with mean migrants
Cem Gülay first came to fame with his autobiography Türken-Sam.
His readings and personal appearances saw him stylized into a literary
social worker everybody can talk to: young people and adults, migrants and ‘biological Germans’. Now problems once confined to the
cities have spread to more rural areas. They start during childhood, at
school, the first place where you can become a victim or a perpetrator
of prejudice – or both. These experiences and interviews come together to give a focussed, at times satirically tinged picture of the state of
play for ethnic minorities in Germany today.
