Ein Wort vom Präsident
(A Word from the President)
The Christmas Holidays are fast upon us – what a
busy time! Wurstfest and Thanksgiving made for a
full November, and now the Christmas Party (1 Dec)
and Wassailfest (3 Dec) are here. What a job our
volunteers are doing keeping these events viable and
successful.
Thanks to all our volunteers, day chairs, and 1st VP,
Cindy Coers we have had another record-breaking
performance at Wurstfest! (See Cindy's summary
later in the Blatt). Special thanks to many for much
behind-the-scenes work - Mary Irwin, Helgard
Suhr-Hollis and others for merchandise purchasing,
Jake Dikkeboom for booth repairs and cleaning,
Lou Streitenberger for painting repairs, and Maria
Roberson for nightly money transfers.
The large crowds made for very busy evenings at
our booth - a popular stopping and shopping place.
For many shifts in the booth, it was a busy time with
little pause. I sure hope those volunteers who worked
so hard in the booth took time to enjoy the other
offerings of Wurstfest.
I must thank the current Executive Board members
for guiding the Society through the year. Most of us
don't see all the extra time they spend on Society
business outside of Tuesday meetings. We did have a
bump in the road early on with the meeting location
issue, but are finishing the year on a smoother path.
Several board positions may be open for 2016. Also,
the board will be sending out a member survey,
please watch your emails for details.
Now it's Christmas Party time! This year we'll have
an optional small gift exchange, a little more music, a
little more fun. This is a great opportunity to end the
year on a good note. Remember to bring a dessert,
and leave those diets at home this night.

Well, another Wurstfest has come and gone. If you
were there, you know what a Wunderbar time was
had by all - food, music, dancing, and of course
beer! The weather was good and the crowds were
phenomenal this year! The Wurstfest Association
reported that they had record numbers of fest goers
this year, estimating over 150,000, and this is
probably a conservative estimate!
The German-American Society did really well this
year, thanks to all of you who worked in the booth
and sold to all those people! Overall, we had a 21%
increase over last year, selling $54,212 in
merchandise! At this time, we don't know what our

exact net profit will be, but an estimate is
$16,800. Our net profit is calculated by taking our
gross sales, deducting the cost of products sold at the
booth, and deducting the 20% to be paid to the
Wurstfest Association. That is a very impressive
number!
Many thanks to all of you who were Day Chairs for
the event. Some of you pulled more that one Day
Chair shift, and also worked in the booth during those
long shifts. A big shout out to Bill Mikeska, who
pulled 3 Day Chair shifts and worked a lot in the
booth as well!
To all of you who volunteered for shifts in the booth
and to those of you who filled in at the last minute, a
BIG THANKS! We can't do this and other projects
without volunteers. To the von Steuben Society
members, who volunteered to run the booth on
Friday, November 13, congratulations on selling
$3,890 in merchandise, which was a 50% increase
over last year on Steuben night.
I want to thank Mary Irwin, who for many years
has done an outstanding job of ordering merchandise
and being the person dealing with our vendors. Until
I spent a little time with her while she was ordering
the last two years, I had no idea how much she does
when it comes to ordering and talking with
vendors. It is a huge commitment on her
part. Helgard Hollis - thanks again for you part in
buying merchandise for the booth. Maria Roberson,
thank you for taking late nights to pick up money and
taking care of the deposits AND taking a Day Chair
shift AND working in the booth!
To all of you who were involved, you all are
commended for your efforts in making this a
successful year for the German-American Society at
Wurstfest! Wishing all of you a lovely Thanksgiving
and Merry Christmas!

Spaßzeit für alle!
(Fun for all)
Christmas is quickly descending upon us, and even
quicker, is our German American Society's Christmas
party. It seems as if we only yesterday heard the
final strains of "Ein Prosit" at Wurstfest, and now we
are into Jingle Bells, which I'm sure we will hear at
our party, along with many other Christmas favorites.
Once again, we will have the pleasure of hearing the
Gemischter Chor Harmonie entertain us with many
beautiful German Christmas songs, followed by a
sing-along. What could be more fun than a festive
evening with good friends, fine food, and beautiful
music - Don't miss it!

Maskenball Celebrating
Fasching / Karnaval!
30 January 2016
Our annual Maskenball event will be on Saturday,
January 30, 2016, 7:00 PM and tickets will be
available at the Christmas Party on December 1 and
also at our January 5 membership meeting. The
tickets will also go on sale starting in January at the
Chamber of Commerce, 390 S. Seguin Avenue.
The Swingin' Dutchmen will entertain us with a
variety of music, and there will be prizes awarded for
best costumes. Tickets are $12.00 per person
purchased in advance or $15.00 at the door the
evening of the event. Get ready for an evening of
fun!

Fall of the Berlin Wall
25th Anniversary
German Language Classes for Adults
The German-American Society will once again
offer German language classes for adults. Gigi
Vaughn has accepted the position of teacher and is
looking forward to starting a new class.
The class will begin on Thursday, January 7 and
continue for nine more Thursdays. The cost of the
class is $25.00.

The group, "Young Americans for Freedom" at
Canyon High School rebuild the Berlin Wall every
year to remind the student, that Germany was
separated by a wall. The wall came down 25 years
ago and we "took" the wall down at the high school.
Marianne Odorfer, Helgard Suhr Hollis and
Dorit Knippa talked about East Germany, about the
airlift in 1948 by Allied troops and about the pilot,
who threw candy from his plane for the children in
Berlin.

German-American Society
I am small, you are big;
Santa Claus has a hole in his pants.
We may not sit at your table and we may get a bit
busy when the meeting starts, but we try to greet &
say hello to every member when they arrive at each
monthly meeting. We are saddened to have lost
several friends this year that we have met since
becoming members.
Whatever your beliefs are, we wish all of you a
Merry Christmas, Frohe Weihnachten, and Happy
Holidays as well!
