Siegen, Sprach-, Literatur- und Medienwissenschaften; Specialities: American Minority Literature, Canadian Literature, Postcolonial Studies, Whiteness Studies, Film / Popular Culture: Passages to India: From Cultural Exoticism to Intercultural Understanding To Western readers and observers, India is often a feast of color, spices, and exotic narratives. An intercultural view can highlight the ways in which these clichés may have their basis in reality, yet at the same time serves to render this reality less complex. As cultural anthropologist James Clifford has argued, culture hence becomes a "moving target": it can never be frozen into a single image or ritual, but is tangible only as a web or process of cultural acts which are always in flux. At the same time, the expectation of exoticism puts Indian writers in a dilemma which Graham Huggan has called the "postcolonial exotic": In order for their books to sell, they have to cater to cultural clichés, yet must seek to subvert them at the same time. An intercultural reading of Indian Literature in English can hence set out to explore both these manoeuvres. Interestingly, the same strategy of exoticist confirmation and subversion can also be traced in Bollywood film. Using contemporary Hindi cinema as a vivid example of India's cultural complexity, we can explore the ways in which contemporary India is at once similar to and different from the life worlds of Western readers and learners. Was heißt fotografisches Darstellen? Was heißt dabei interkulturelles Verstehen und was transkulturelles? ... Anke Lang, StR’in, Gymnasium am Schloss (Saarbrücken) and English Department of Saarland University: Authentic texts in the English Classroom as a basis of intercultural understanding The word “text” is understood to cover spoken and written language in a variety of situations and through a range of media. The main focus is on how the teacher can recognize authenticity and use various types of text in the classroom enabling the student to acquire intercultural competence by dealing with the material. Dr. Sönke Zehler, UdS, FR 4.3 British, North American & Anglophone Literatures &Cultures, TransculturalMediaStudiesProject: Media Activism against Apartheid: Transcultural Media Studies in the ESL-Classroom “The 1950s was the decade in which the African National Congress and its alliance partners launched the massive Defiance Campaign, a huge peaceful affront on white supremacy. It was the decade in which the Freedom Charter, the central document of the anti-racist movement, was written on the basis of contributions from all over the country. And it was the decade in which the apartheid state responded with massive treason trials for those who defied it. The 1950s also saw a new generation of black writers talking about the conditions of their lives in their own voices - voices with a distinctive stamp and style. The popular Drum magazine in the 1950s was their forum, and encouraged their emergence. It depicted a vibrant urban black culture for the first time - a world of jazz, shebeens (illegal drinking dens), and flamboyant gangsters (tsotsis). Reportage blurred into fiction: there were satirical stories ridiculing the discriminatory and repressive policies of the state, while others provided harrowing details of the effect of apartheid legislation on people's lives." (SouthAfrica.info). This workshop revisits the "Drum Decade" to illustrate the approach and agenda of "transcultural media studies" through a series of concrete examples and classroom exercises. It introduces texts (short stories) and films (Drum, Amandla!, Have You Seen Drum Recently, Schadeberg Schwarz-Weiss) well-suited to address the curricular emphasis on "Global English" and allow students (and teachers) to take advantage of the media attention (already) generated by the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
