Professor Jonathan Locke Hart Sonnets – classical and modern
Die Deutsch-Britische Gesellschaft lädt Sie herzlich ein zu einem Vortrag in englischer Sprache von Professor Jonathan Locke Hart University of Alberta Sonnets – classical and modern Wednesday, May 9th 2012 at 7 pm Goethe-Museum, Schloss Jägerhof, Jacobistraße 2, 40211 Düsseldorf This lecture-reading will discuss the poetics and temporality of Shakespeare’s sonnets and then offer a reading of Jonathan Hart’s sonnets. Anyone writing sonnets in English cannot really ignore Shakespeare, and whether using Perarchan ( Italian) or Shakespearean ( English) form as a model as a point of departure , Shakespeare’s sonnets haunt the field. This is something positive because Shakespeare and others open up a field to explore love, time and other concerns in a form that is demanding but that has possibilities beyond the conventions of its conventions. Imitation and invention “depart from” their literary sources in both senses. Jonathan Locke Hart has written books of poetry, history and literary criticism and theory, including Empires and Colonies (2008), Dreamwork (2010), Musing (2011), Shakespeare and His Contemporaries ( 2011), Literature, Theory, History (2011) and Fictional and Historical Worlds ( forthcoming). He has held visiting appointments at Toronto, Harvard, Cambridge, Princeton, the Sorbonne-Nouvelle and elsewhere. ************ Im Anschluß an die Veranstaltung bitten wir zu einem Umtrunk.
