MOLINA THE STONE-SLINGERS AND THE PUNIC WARS Until the 3rd century BC, the Phoenician-Punic civilization, with its capital in Carthage, was the military and commercial power of the western Mediterranean, but other cities were on the rise, among them Rome. The collision of the two powers, each seeking primacy, culminated in three great wars (264-241 BC; 219-201 BC; 149-146 BC); all ending in Roman victory. These Punic Wars thus decided the outcome of history. The inhabitants of the Balearics did not remain aloof from these major conflicts and many of them, taking advantage possibly of a little overpopulation, were enlisted as mercenaries. Because of their previous contacts with the Phoenician-Punic people their favoured choice was to hire themselves to the Carthaginians. In the army, the Balearic recruits were lightly armed and fought outside the main ranks. The favourite weapon was the sling, though we know they also had small spears and some swords. Their skill in the use of the sling won them legendary fame, to the extent that they were considered the best stone-slingers in the world. One curious fact is that, according to written sources, the mercenaries were unable to introduce foreign currency to the island, so spent all their earnings on women and wine. Quite a number of classic authors record these facts, often repeating or exaggerating anecdotes disclosed to them, thus enhancing the level of admiration for their dominance in the use of the sling. Licofrón narrates how from a small age they learned the art of the sling from their mothers, forbidden from taking any mouthful before knocking their food off a log. Diodoro Sículo and Estrabón narrate with some detail how they broke shields and helmets with the incredible precision and power of the shot; and how they were able to send larger stones longer distances than other stone-slingers yet rarely failed to hit their target. The authors added that they used three different sizes of shot depending on the level of accuracy and distance required. The classic texts also make reference to the great esteem in which the Balearic stone-slingers were held by the Carthaginian generals, Hamilcar Barca and his son Hannibal, since they were enough on their own in some skirmishes, and were even able to tip the balance of some battles in their favour. Jh. v. B. ROIG
