BZ-SS-2014 - MUNICH FABRIC START
I S S U E 0 2 - F E B RUA RY 2 0 1 3 BZ-SS-2014 38 Dear Visitors, Dear Exhibitors Sehr geehrte besucher, liebe aussteller F O RE W O R D Sebastian Klinder, Managing Director OF MUNICH FABRIC START Without doubt denim is about to make its comeback – the sector is convinced. Nevertheless, non-denims will still play a major role in the 2014 Spring/Summer season. That this is so because they impact the colour, coating and light weight of jeans – is a view not only held by denim expert Alberto Candiani in an interview on page 6. The BLUEZONE has not just started reacting to this trend at this point. For seasons now the BLUEZONE has being showcasing not only leading denim collections but also innovative flats and interesting prints for chinos and 5-pockets that are now as key for that casual look as jeans are. “Overground Nomadix” is the motto of this edition of Blue Zone. Visionary architecture, modern street art and design in the public space all enhance the denim and casual world here. In style terms we see a blend of future-oriented retro with technical surfaces and looks from the 80s and 90s setting the trends. Less visible but none the less relevant in the new season are green production processes. The denim sector likes to see itself as a green pioneer in the eco movement. This is because the issue of sustainability is one the younger target group in particular holds dear. And quite rightly so. In future this target group will be even more careful about where and under what conditions their jeans were manufactured. Here, as always, the denim sector finds itself faced with a dilemma. By highlighting eco-friendly ambitions you can sometimes scare people off and make “normal” products appear in a bad light. However, in Spring 2013 Levi’s will be launching a new collection in stores that is made of recycled plastic bottles and food trays. This means Levi’s wasteless products will contain 20% post-consumer plastic waste. New recycling methods are generally a trend in the eco segment that is focalised in the Green Zone of our denim fair. Wishing you great fun exploring the fair and a successful 2014 Spring/Summer season. Viel Spaß beim Erkunden und eine erfolgreiche Saison Frühjahr/Sommer 2014 wünscht Ihnen Yours, Sebastian Klinder Ihr Sebastian Klinder 03 DENIM I S S UE ss 1 4 3 FOREWORD - VORWORT 6 The Voices of Denim 9 READY MADE SOLUTIONS 10 ECO NEWS 12 INTERVIEW ORTA 13 DENIM NEWS 14 Impressions 15 TOMORROW IS TODAY 16 TRENDS SPRING.SUMMER 2014 04 05 DENIM BOOM DENIM BOOM THE VOICES of denim Isko, Central Fabrics, Candiani, I.T.V. und Royo über das Denim-Comeback, Neon und Nachhaltigkeit Wie stark schätzen Sie das Denim-Revival ein? Ich erwarte also starke Farben und weiche Coatings auf leichten Qualitäten. garagen No2 - Sharif Hamza Isko, Central Fabrics, Candiani and Royo about the denim comeback, neon and sustainability How strong will colours and prints remain? Marco Lucietti(Isko): Since we know that prints will remain as an important issue, we have tried to apply our techniques on denim fabrics. So as for colours. Under the concept “eye candy”, we create the neon trend for skinny jeggings. Either unicoloured in orange, pink, yellow and green, or with coloured punch yarns which result in different colour combinations. Alberto Candiani CANDIANI Marco lucietti ISKO Panos Sofianos ROYO Barbara Gnutti ITV How influential will the Denim Revival be? Alberto Candiani (Candiani): I’m not sure how strong it will be. But after three years characterized by non-denims as chinos, flats, cotton trousers, colours and prints, denim finally comes back. To be honest, the non-denim period has lasted longer than expected. I think pants have become generally very fashionable. Denim is the only answer to the need for more timeless basics. Of course, the non-denim phase has also an influence on the jeans. Hence, I expect strong colours and soft coatings on light qualities. What are the key tren ds fo r Spring 2 0 1 4? Michael (Central Fabrics): 1) Colour 2) Prints 3) Ecologically-valuable concepts 4) Functional denim 5) Super-stretch denim with a soft feel? 06 What are the innovations in the field of washing and finishing? Panos Sofianos (Royo): Reinventing denim has become a stereotype. But there are always some improvements concerning function, comfort and flexibility. Furthermore, we have developed NRLess, a washing method that is based on a new generation of enzymes, which saves 30% of energy, water and thus production cost. This is a project in collaboration with Novozymes. Regarding “finishing”, we provide a number of cleaner looks called “Irontouch”. Nevertheless, don´t forget that silhouette is important as well! Slim fits still dominate. But I also see the comeback of more casual forms like Boyfriend and Low Crotch. What’s new in the sector of sustainability? Barbara Gnutti (ITV): Respect for the planet always guides us through the complete production process. For example, we have continuously increased the percentage of organic cotton in recent years. We have also developed new, environmentally-friendly washing techniques: There is one that works without water and another uses pure water without chemicals. Our technicians’ aim is to offer future generations a better world to live in. 01. Candiani | N-DENIM - Semble Supra 02. Candiani | N-DENIM - Core Preshrunk 03. The aim of the Turkish denim producer is the reduction of water consumption. This is done by adopting new coloring techniques that require less water. The reprocessing plant at the site of the Turkish Headquarter was completely funded and built by ISKO. A filtering system provides clean water in the production process and prepares it for other industrial and civil use at the site. In addition, the CO2 emission is significantly reduced by 60%. They are now well below the EU maximum required level. Furthermore, ISKO also invests in new products of organic cotton and recycled materials. “ISKO Earth Fit” – a fully sustainable denim collection – is the fruitful result of research for years. Among the 25 denim fabrics, 40% of water consumption and 30% of energy and chemicals are saved. In this process, new eco-friendly enzymes and resin waxes are used. The ISKO Recycled Project in collaboration with Nudie Jeans allows disassembly of finished jeans to original cotton. High-quality machines can then weave and newly compose the yarns. 10 Levi´s is working with a new trend within the eco-movement: Recycling. The new Waste-Less-Denim-Collection which will roll out in the market in spring, consists of 20% of used and recycled ingredients – on average 8 recycled plastic bottles of 250-500 ml per jeans. “From the beginning we created our products in terms of usefulness and intelligent design. By giving this new status to the unwanted materials, we hope to raise and strengthen the consciousness of the public of the recycling issue”, says James Curleigh, the Global President of Levi´s. “The collection proves that it is not a must to sacrifice among quality, beauty and fashion aspects to give a new purpose to something supposedly useless.” In the Waste-Less Spring Collection 2013, over 3.5 million recycled bottles are used. Throughout the USA, Levi´s partners have helped the collection of products made from PET plastic and material Polyethylene Terephthalate over municipal recycling systems, including brown beer, sodas and green translucent water bottles, as well as black food trays. The materials are first sorted by colors, then cut into fine flakes and processed into polyester fibers. These fibers are mixed with cotton fibers in the next step, and woven by Cone Denim with traditional cotton yarn to produce the denim collection. The colors of the bottles give a beautiful tone to the material and create a unique finishing to the end product. Isko investiert weiter in nachhaltige Technologien. 11 NEWS EC O I N TER V IE W THE INTERVIEW Central Fabrics Based on an analysis of Central Fabrics, 20 Liters of water are used to wash and dye a pair of jeans. Aware of the impending water scarcity, Central Fabrics has developed a recycling method that recycles 100% of the dyes, and 70% of the used water can be used in the dyeing process again. The idea is to develop sustainable fibers, not only conventional ones, but also colored versions. Hence it is important for us to apply the dyeing and coating techniques that keep water and energy consumption low. For hydrophobic surfaces, we focus on Flourine-free coating processes. Recycling also plays an increasingly important role. Are the denim brands willing to invest in sustainable processes and do they think their commitment to this is sufficient? The detox-campaign of Greenpeace has created an awareness of the sustainable topics. Brands such as Levi’s, H & M, Zara, Mango and Esprit are urged to put pressure on their suppliers to stop releasing chemicals into the water. The “Sustainable Apparel Coalition” has introduced the “Higg index” that measures the environmental performance of clothing. Transparency in the supply chain is absolutely necessary, and so does the promotion of eco-labeling within the industry. Companies increasingly take on the challenge of developing better methods in the production process in order to reduce the negative effects on our planet. Orta has engaged in a cool and sustainable lifestyle idea in the new project “Orta Blu Protect Water”. Mehr Infos dazu gibt es auf www.ortablu.org 12 DENIM NEWS has developed a new dyeing system called “N-Denim”. This forward-looking nitrogen technology saves just as much water as the “Indigo Juice” process does. The new processes are particularly suited for laser and ozone treatments. For the stretch segment Candiani focuses on “Sling” and “Candy”, two methods that prevent stretch denim from bagging thereby ensuring a perfect fit. These ensure 20% to 40% stretch for denim fabrics that stay in shape while wearing. Candiani is increasingly promoting new stretch materials, especially also for menswear. Royo sees less vintage washes for Spring 2014 and more fresh, clean, lightweight and modern denim fabrics manufactured with new environmentally friendly methods. “Consumers are becoming more and more interested in sustainable products,” says Panos Sofianos and adds “which is why the new product ‘Renascut’, based on a recycling process using old denim, is very important to us.” NRLess is a new wash that consumes 30% less water and energy.
