Bremen Cotton Report Nr. 01/02 - 12. Ende Dezember 2011. Quelle: ICAC New York Cotton Futures. Bremen Cotton Report No. 01/02 - january 12, 2012 english version The china national reserve is absorbing a large portion of the 2011/12 global cotton crop In 2011/12, global cotton production is forecast 8% higher at 26.8 million tons, whereas consumption could decline by 2% to 23.9 million tons. As a result of the projected surplus of 2.9 million tons, global cotton stocks could rebound to 11.9 million tons by the end of 2011/12. This recovery follows two seasons of relatively tight global stocks. Almost 40% of the gain in global stocks this season could take place in China, due to the rebuilding of the national reserve. The Chinese government has bought large volumes of domestic cotton, on the basis of its new support price policy (if cotton prices in China fall below a specific threshold, then the government buys domestic cotton): between October 8 and December 30, 2011, a total of 2.1 million tons of domestic cotton were purchased for the China national reserve. Daily purchases are continuing. There is no limit to the amount of domestic cotton purchased by the national reserve this season. In addition, it is reported that about one million tons of nonChinese cotton has been bought for the reserve; this cotton will be shipped to China over the next few months. Overall, the national reserve, which was almost exhausted by the end of 2010/11, could grow by at least 3 million tons or 11% of 2011/12 global production. It is possible that some of the reserve cotton will be sold later in the season. Outside of China, cotton stocks are expected to grow by 26% to 8.7 million tons in 2011/12, the largest in four years. Most of this increase will take place in India, Australia, the United States and Brazil. The lack of demand for cotton and ample supplies are placing downward pressure on prices. The Cotlook A Index dropped from 114 cents per pound in early August to 93 cents per pound in late December. This was the first time in 16 months that the A Index fell below 95 cents per pound. The average Cotlook A Index for the first five months of 2011/12 is 109 cents per pound or a third lower than the 2010/11 full-season average. The sharp drop in cotton prices in the current season is reducing farmers’ incomes and decreasing for the first time in three years the attractiveness of this crop when compared to its main alternatives. In addition, agricultural production costs have increased since last year. As a result, cotton area in many countries is expected to decline in 2012/13. After two seasons at depressed levels, global cotton mill use is forecast to start growing again in 2012/13. This expectation is highly dependent on the assumption of a recovery in global economic growth that would stimulate purchases of textile products and consumption of raw fibers. The Secretariat forecasts global cotton mill use to rise by 3% in 2012/13 to 24.7 million tons, driven by Asia. Source: ICAC 20th CSITC Round Trial completed The 20th Round Trial under the auspices of the Task Force on Commercial Standardization of Instrument Testing of Cotton (CSITC RT 2011-3) was conducted from October to December 2011. During the 20th Round Trial, 80 testing facilities from all continents submitted results from 137 instruments – again an all-time high number of participants. As the CFC/ICAC/33 Project on Commercial Standardization of Instrument Testing is ending, the CSITC Round Trials will be conducted without public funding from 2012 on. Each round trial consists of five samples prepared by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and sent to participating laboratories. Each sample is tested in each laboratory six times a day for five days for all six CSITC parameters of micronaire, length, length uniformity, World Cotton Supply strength, Rd and +b, resulting in a total of 900 measure(in million tons) ments from each instrument. Results are downloaded electronically and sent to the Bremen Fibre Institute for 2010/11 2011/12 2012/13 evaluation. The record prices received by farmers in 2010/11 encouraged them to expand their plantings in 2011/12. Global production of extra-fine cotton is expected to increase this season by 29% to 634,000 tons according to a new ICAC report, the largest in four seasons. The United States and Egypt account for 70% of the projected gain in production, but crops are also projected larger in India, Sudan, China, Israel, Peru and Tajikistan. Consumption of extra-fine cotton in producing countries is expected to increase by 4% to 413,000 tons in 2011/12 after a drop last season due to insufficient supply. In Egypt consumption is expected to increase by 59% to 53,000 tons in 2011/12, driven by larger production and the decision of the government of Egypt to temporarily ban imports of Upland cotton starting at the end of October 2011, to provide financial incentives to spinning mills to consume domestic cotton. Mill use is also projected up in India, but down in China. Global demand remained strong during the first half of 2011 and translated into large forward commitments for the 2011/12 crop. Demand slowed then drastically in the second half of 2011, due to global economic concerns and a general slowing of demand for textile products. Extra-fine cotton producing countries consume about three-quarters of their combined production, the rest being exported to other countries. Giza 88 was at $1.95 per pound in mid-October, but has since dropped to $1.55 per pound. The ratio of prices between American Pima and Egyptian Giza 88 is currently at 1.24, above the historical average. Upland cotton prices have fallen faster than extra-fine cotton prices over the last few months. The ratio between the Cotlook quote for American Pima and the Cotlook A Index, after dropping to a season-average of 1.39 in 2010/11, is now around 2. Extract from Extra-Fine Cotton Update, ICAC, Dec. 29. 2011 Beltwide Cotton Conferences The Beltwide Cotton Conferences took place from January 3 through 6, 2012 in Orlando, Florida. This event comprehends various conferences which combine symposia, panel discussions, workshops and seminars. The Beltwide Cotton Conferences are regarded as the world’s largest convention of cotton researchers and scientist representing the optimal platform for technology transfer. The Beltwide Cotton Production Conference, the Cotton Agronomy & Physiology Conference, the Annual Cotton Insect Research and Control Conference as well as numerous other specific get-togethers informed cotton producers and corresponding scientific divisions on newsworthy research results and discussions. The conferences are organized by the UNational Cotton Council (NCC) and its cooperating partners focus on the US cotton industry. The next Beltwide Conferences will take place in San Antonio, Texas in January 2013. Prices of extra-fine cotton were relatively steady during the first three months of 2011/12, due to slow activity on the market. Prices declined significantly in November and December 2011, driven down by the pressure of increased supplies coming from harvested crops and the lack of demand. The 2011/12 Cotlook quote for American Pima remained between $2.20 and $2.25 per pound between August and October. It declined over the following two months, reaching $1.92 per pound at the end of December. The Cotlook quote for Egyptian 8 Photo: USDA/ARS Image Library Exports of extra-fine cotton from producing countries are expected to increase by 14% to 288,000 tons in 2011/12, fueled by increased production. Imports of extra-fine cotton by producing countries could decrease by 10% to 146,000 tons. Stocks of extra-fine cotton in producing countries are projected to rebound by 52% to 228,000 tons by the end of July 2012. One reason might be the return of institutional investors to the futures market and the revaluation of the positions. According to reports cotton has developed slightly worse during last year in comparison to other agricultural raw materials of the same asset category. A better development is partly expected. Stronger demand from the Far East was registered without already observing a general turn of the consumption trend. The Chinese exports weakened at last on a slightly high level, yet the Chinese demand remained stable and the Chinese National Reserve as the currently largest purchaser on the cotton market will probably skim a large portion of this season’s surpluses. This development supported a stable price development on the local market. Companies returning from the holidays now faced higher prices than during December but at least a stabilized price development. The changed situation as well as the company holidays mainly limited the turnover to nearby long staple and extra-long staple deliveries.
