<| [email protected] Protection for the Most Expensive Painting »Adele Bloch-Bauer« from Klimt behind Amiran® anti-reflective glass When U.S. entrepreneur Ronald Lauder paid 135 million Dollars for the world-famous portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, painted by Austrian painter Gustav Klimt at his creative peak in 1907, this became the highest sum ever paid for a painting. The mainly gold masterpiece can look back on a turbulent history. Today, it hangs safely behind Amiran® inside the Neue Galerie in New York. This special anti-reflective glass from schott protects »Golden Adele« from ultraviolet light and glass breakage and offers a perfect view of the Art Nouveau masterpiece. <| [email protected] Expansion of syringe manufacturing capacity schott forma vitrum has tripled its production capacity with glass and polymer syringes in St. Gallen, Switzerland. The international manufacturer of pharmaceutical packaging has invested around 20 million euros to glass forming, infrastructure, clean rooms and wfi facilities (water for injection purposes). The new production facilities are based on stateof-the-art technology. In addition, several accompanying measures were taken to further improve the flow of goods and optimize customer service following expansion. <| [email protected] Photo | Foto : schott ag »Sundancer« wins yet another U.S. solar competition At the annual Dell-Winston School Solar Car Challenge in Texas, the largest solar race of its kind in the U.S.A., the Sundancer team from Houston, Mississippi, was victorious for the sixth time in a row. With peak speeds of just under 100 km/h, the five meter long solarpowered car left all of the competitors behind as it drove 413 loops, covering almost 1,000 kilometers during the four-day race. 856 new solar cells from schott were one main reason for the repeated success. Since 2001, when »Sundancer« first decided to use solar cells from schott, it has won every race. <| [email protected] schottsolutions No. 1 / 2007 21 Photo | Foto : W. This could orbit the Earth six times. The high-tech components manufactured from fibers are put to use in areas, such as the automotive industry, lighting, medical, indus<| trial and security technology. No. 1 / 2007 23 NEWS Solar Power, Not Gas Starlit Some 1,400 modules for largest solar plant in New England What was an industrial brownfields site, became a role model for environmentally compatible conversion in the fall of 2006. Following five years of planning, the city of Brockton in the U.S. state of Massachusetts transformed what used to be a gas transfer facility into a solar power plant. schott Solar provided around 1,400 ase 310 watt modules for the 425 kW photovoltaic facility, New England’s largest, that will supply power to the Brockton City Hall and the police station. The energy generated will reduce the volume of carbon dioxide emissions in the region by approximately what roughly 360,000 square meters of forests would absorb. <| [email protected] Zerodur® secondary mirror sharpens the eye of the VLT in Chile Modern astronomy could not do without adaptive telescope mirrors. Made from thin glass substrates, they can be adjusted as needed and, therefore, compensate for image distortions. After all, when the universe is viewed through a telescope, the light received is disturbed by atmospheric influences. As a result, the stars twinkle and appear diffuse. This is why the eso (European Southern Observatory) has decided to use an adaptive secondary mirror for its Very Large Telescope (vlt) in Chile for the first time. The blank provided by schott , 1.15 meters in diameter, is thinned down and polished to only two millimeters in thickness and equipped with hundreds of actuators. Like the main 8.2 meter mirror located upstream, it also consists of schott Zerodur® glass ceramic and will serve as a prototype for tomorrow’s extremely large telescopes. < | [email protected] NEWS Photo | Foto : A.
