Year 7 Home Learning Booklet French and German Skills Name: Tutor Group: Teacher: Given out: Monday 27 June Parent/Carer Comment: Staff Comment: Target: Hand in: Monday 4 July This homework booklet practises some of the language skills you have covered this year. It includes work in GERMAN and FRENCH – but the focus is on your skills. It will help you review the key grammar and language learnt throughout your first year of foreign language at Whitstone in preparation for year 8. Each exercise is labelled as: Bronze: All students to complete. Tasks include recognition, listing and simple grammar or vocabulary. Silver: All students to try to complete. Tasks include developing ideas, more detailed recognition and development of grammar and vocabulary. Gold: Some students to complete. Tasks include higher level skill development, more detailed language structures and vocabulary recognition. Some tasks are labelled with more than 1 level of challenge. You need to select the level of challenge appropriate to you. This could mean that for some tasks you complete the bronze section only, but for others you work on the silver or gold. Try as much as you can. Pupils must complete the self-evaluation boxes at the end of the booklet. Exercise 1 – Basic Grammar - Pronouns The job of a pronoun is to replace the noun in a sentence. You need to know what they are in order to help you understand the texts you read or to help you adapt language to talk about others. Bronze: Fill in the following tables with the correct French and German pronouns. Use the boxes underneath to help. (she) Exercise 2 – German Word Order The verb is the action of a sentence and it is usually the 2nd idea in a sentence, e.g Ich habe eine Katze – I have a cat. Using ‘weil’ (because) in a sentence changes the word order, to send any verbs that follow it to the end of the sentence. (verb in the 2nd part of the sentence gets chased to the end of the sentence after ‘weil’). Silver: Put these sentences in the correct order following the rules: a) esse Ich ein Butterbrot. - b) wohnt in Deutschland er. - c) findet Mathe sie schwierig. - d) trinken wir Cola. - e) eine Schwester habe Ich. - f) heissen Sophie sie und Claire. - Gold: Link both sentences together with ‘weil’ remembering the word order rule Example: Ich finde Sport toll. Bronze: Highlight the words that are cognates (look like English words). Silver: Underline the nouns – remember nouns have capital letters in German. Gold: Circle the verbs – remember the word order rules in German. Bronze: In the space below write out 5 German words mentioned in the text which you have been able to work out from reading it carefully. Translate into English. Silver: In the space below write out 5 short German sentences mentioned in the text which you have been able to work out from reading it carefully. Translate into English. Gold: In the space below write out 5 new/adapted sentences using new opinions, verbs, vocabulary. Write out in German the new text you have adapted. Include the English translations too. 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) Exercise 4 – French Grammar - Present Tense When you look up a verb in the dictionary it is always given in the INFINITIVE. This means it is the full name of the verb – eg to play, to do, to go etc. You need to change the ending of the verb in the present tense to follow a pattern. Regular verbs eg jouer = to play. You remove the ‘er’ to make the STEM then add the ending shown, depending on who is in the sentence. Je joue = I play Tu joues – you play (singular) Il/elle joue – he/she plays Nous jouons – we play Vous jouez – you play (plural) Ils/elles jouent – they play (boys/girls) Bronze: Fill in the correct part of the present tense verbs, following the pattern shown above. Read the text: Bronze: Underline all the pronouns. Silver: Highlight all the sports and activities you know or could work out. Gold: Circle all the different ways to give an opinion in French . By breaking down a text like this you should start to understand what it is talking about.
