bestehen auf dem Besucherparkplatz der
Firma Würth. Die Regiobuslinie 7 verbindet
stündlich den Bahnhof Waldenburg mit dem
Museum Würth.
How to get there
By car use highway A6, exit Kupferzell,
continue on B19 in the direction of KünzelsauGaisbach, exit Gaisbach-Süd. Or coming
from Würzburg on B19, exit Gaisbach-Nord.
Parking space is available on visitor’s parking
lot of the Würth company. You can get from
Waldenburg station to Museum Würth daily
every hour by bus route 7.
Museum Würth has chosen approx. 150 works by
contemporary artists living and working in Namibia
so as to provide insight into the art landscape of that
country. The great diversity of Namibian art is
already reflected in the various techniques represented, among them oil and acrylic painting,
linocuts, cardboard printing, photography and quilting, collages made of recycled plastic and scrap metals as well as three-dimensional objects out of wire,
serpentine, marble or soapstone. Windhoek is the
main centre of a creative art scene which while taking its cultural heritage into account also engages
primarily with the topical social, political and economic realities of Namibia since independence. In
this way they make their own particular contribution
to modern art.
The term ‘young geNerATION’ does not just refer to
a group of artists born at the time of independence
and sharing a social and political affiliation. Rather
it embraces all artists who explore the essence of
Namibia as a newly emerging nation. This also
includes artists who were active before independence and who, over the past two-and-a-half decades,
have further developed their work through their
search for new themes and forms of expression. A
group of recently acquired works from the Würth
Collection forms the basis of the exhibition and is
complemented by works on loan from private property and from our cooperation partner, the National
Art Gallery of Namibia in Windhoek.
Germany and Namibia have been linked by a colonial past for more than 130 years, since the German
Empire entered into the “competition for Africa” in
1884 and founded the Reich’s first colony there,

known as German South-West Africa. From the very
start, however, the German colonial power met with
great resistance from the indigenous peoples. This
culminated in the savage Battle of Waterberg and
the subsequent genocide of the Herero.
With the end of the First World War and the associated restructuring of the colonial map of the world,
Namibia came under South African administration,
and the social grievances among the ethnic groups
was exacerbated by the Apartheid system. The year
1989 brought political change with it not only for
Germany but also for Namibia. The first free elections took place in Namibia that year, and on 21
March 1990 the country officially gained independence as a republic.

Deutschland und Namibia verbindet seit über
130 Jahren die koloniale Vergangenheit, nachdem
1884 das Deutsche Kaiserreich in den „Wettlauf um
Afrika“ eingestiegen war und unter dem Namen
Deutsch-Südwestafrika die erste Kolonie des Reiches
gründete. Von Anfang an stieß die deutsche Kolonialmacht jedoch bei den einheimischen Völkern auf
großen Widerstand, welcher in der grausamen
Schlacht am Waterberg und dem anschließenden
Völkermord an den Herero gipfelte.
Mit dem Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs und der damit
verbundenen Neuordnung der kolonialen Landkarte
kam Namibia unter südafrikanische Verwaltung und
das System der Apartheid verschärfte die sozialen
Missstände zwischen den Bevölkerungsgruppen. Das
Jahr 1989 brachte sowohl für Deutschland als auch
für Namibia die politische Wende. In Namibia fanden
die ersten freien Wahlen statt und als Republik
wurde das Land am 21. März 1990 offiziell unabhängig.

Mit einer Auswahl von rund 150 Werken zeitgenössischer Künstlerinnen und Künstler, die in Namibia
leben und arbeiten, bietet das Museum Würth einen
Einblick in die dortige Kunstlandschaft. Bereits die
unterschiedlichen Techniken wie Öl- und Acrylmalerei, Linolschnitt, Kartondruck, Fotografie und Quilttechnik, Collagen aus recyceltem Kunststoff und Altmetall sowie dreidimensionale Objekte aus Draht,
Serpentin, Marmor oder Speckstein spiegeln die
Vielfalt namibischer Kunst wider. Vor allem in Windhoek hat sich eine kreative Kunstszene zusammengefunden, die sich zum einen auf ihr kulturelles Erbe
besinnt, sich zum anderen aber hauptsächlich mit
den aktuellen sozialen, politischen und wirtschaftlichen Realitäten Namibias in der Zeit nach
dessen Unabhängigkeit auseinandersetzt und so
einen eigenen Beitrag zur modernen Kunst leistet.
Der Begriff junge GeNerATION bezieht sich dabei
nicht nur auf eine Gruppe jener Künstler, die zur Zeit
der Unabhängigkeit geboren wurde und die eine
soziale und politische Zugehörigkeit teilt. Vielmehr
schließt er alle Künstler ein, die das Wesen Namibias
als einer neu entstehenden Nation erforschen. So
sind auch Künstler einbezogen, die schon vor der
Unabhängigkeit tätig waren, sich aber durch die
Suche nach neuen Themen und neuen Ausdrucksweisen in den letzten zweieinhalb Jahrzehnten
künstlerisch weiterentwickelt haben.
Basis der Ausstellung bildet ein Konvolut an jüngst
erworbenen Arbeiten in der Sammlung Würth, das
durch Leihgaben aus Privatbesitz und der National
Art Gallery of Namibia in Windhoek, unserem
Kooperationspartner, ergänzt werden konnte.
