Brno 1952 - Grand Prix Facts and Numbers
RACE OF SOLIDARITY AMONGST NATIONS FOR THE GRAND PRIX OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA ZÁVOD DRUŽBY NÁRODŮ O VELKOU CENU ČESKOSLOVENSKA DAS RENNEN DER FREUNDSCHAFT DER NATIONEN UM DEN GROSSEN PREIS TSCHECHOSLOWAKEI DER Brno Sunday 28 September 1952 – Neděle 28 září 1952 – Sonntag 28 September 1952 8 laps, 8 kol, 8 runden @ 17.800 km = 142.400 km Entry List, přihlášky, Nennungen: ing. Jiří Pohl, CS – M.G. Škoda Jaroslav Pavelka, CS – Tatra Monopost Vazda, CS – Tatra Monopost Václav Bobek, CS – Škoda Supersport Tenora, CS – Maserati Edgar Barth, DD – BMW Notes: This time, the event combined a number of motorcycle and automobile races in a single day. As the official title suggested, it was once again extended to international competition. Riders from Poland, East Germany, and Hungary joined the motorcycle races, however, only three racecar drivers from East Germany arrived in Brno. Right from the beginning, participants from all nations agreed on the poor quality of fuel supplied by the nationalized Benzinol company. Apparently, the different drums varied significantly in octane levels as well as volume. Other than that, however, the overall organization was once again solid. The automobile race for the 750 ccm class was held separately for six laps (won by Štyler, CS on Minor in 1:03:09.5 = 101.459 km/h), while the race cars and SportsCars started together in a single event. Both races were stopped after the winner completed the distance with all running cars classified. The FIA had reduced the Formula 1 World Championship engine capacity to 2.00 liters or 500 ccm supercharged for 1952. The upgraded Tatra T607 Monopost that featured a 2350 ccm V8 engine probably was the only car in the field exceeding this limit...although it is not clear what type of engine was in Tenora’s Maserati. The main race was scheduled for ten laps but shortened due to poor weather, which was cold with strong winds. The spectator count reached approximately 120,000. Interestingly, Barth took part in the 500 ccm motorcycle race (where he retired after holding 3rd position during opening laps) and later that same afternoon in the car race. Unfortunately, the media reports state very little about the races themselves. Instead, they are quite meticulous about describing the opening ceremony, the decorations around the track commemorating the 35th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, and the resolve to stand by the Soviet Union in order to ensure happiness and peace. Also mentioned is the fact that already 60% of bus drivers adopted their vehicles into socialist care and a realization that Czechoslovak motorsport needs to learn from the vast pool of experience and methods utilized by Soviet sport authorities. The event was run by Voluntary Union of Public Motorists under the patronage of the Ministry of Defense and the minister Army General Dr. Čepička himself. Poznámky: Tentokrát byly četné motocyklové a automobilové závody vtěsnány do jediného dne. They started first, followed one minute later by nine two-liter SportsCars, and one minute after that 11 SportsCars with a capacity up to 1100 ccm. After posting fastest the time in Friday’s practice, Pavelka took off from pole position, followed by Barth and Bobek. Unlucky Pohl had to retire shortly after the start due to strong vibrations caused by a loose engine. Barth had to pit for an unspecified reason, and Bobek and Tenora retired on laps 3 and 4, respectively. Pavelka cruised to a comfortable win ahead of Barth, and the SportsCars followed far behind.
