German Press Review – 09 October 2013 European Parliament Tobacco directive Numerous papers report on the adoption of the tobacco directive by the European Parliament. MEP Matthias GROOTE stated that the directive is an important step to protect especially young people to take up smoking. MEPs Karl-Heinz FLORENZ and Jürgen CREUTZMANN see the directive as a success and a good compromise. MEP Peter LIESE welcomed the decision concerning e-cigarettes. MEP Renate SOMMER, however, deplored that the debate about the new tobacco directive resembled a "witch hunt". MEPs Dagmar ROTH-BEHRENDT and Rebecca HARMS criticized the extreme efforts of the tobacco lobby to weaken the directive, both are not fully satisfied with the voted result. President Martin SCHULZ demands that Germany should host more refugees. Hans-Peter Friedrich, Federal Minister of the Interior of Germany criticizes Martin SCHULZ and states that Germany hosts the majority of refugees in Europe. Many articles mention that the European Parliament will vote about Eurosur, a new system to control EU frontiers. MEP Alexander Graf LAMBSDORFF states that "it's important to prevent the death of ever more refugees". The Transport and Tourism Committee of the European Parliament wants the Commission to withdraw the proposal, the plenary of the EP will vote on this issue. Berliner Zeitung, p. 10 Football World Cup in Qatar MEP Barbara LOCHBIHLER sharply criticised the FIFA for not doing enough to impose the respect of human rights to the Qatar authorities.
