8 For ewor d to the fir st edition To introduce Ulli Beier is redundant. I will pay him tribute instead. Ulli Beier is a man of culture, a promoter of the arts, and a creative artist in his own right. His areas of cultural involvement are various: there is Ulli Beier the playwright, the fiction writer; there is the critic of art, literature, architecture, culture; there is the translator from five languages; there is the editor of books and magazines; and then, there is the collaborator. Ulli Beier is a cultural collaborator, in the widest sense of the word. Ulli Beier will go down in cultural history as the man who contributed most in Nigeria and Papua New Guinea towards the creation and sustenance of written literature and cultural renaissance. While Nigeria and Papua New Guinea are his residential addresses, Africa, Australasia, India, African America and the West Indies, in short, the developing countries, are the areas of his main concern. He has enriched the Englishspeaking black culture through translations of works from French and Spanishspeaking black writers. Four major approaches are discernible in regard to the cultures of the developing world. At one time, the most fashionable one went like this: There is nothing of value there, boys, disregard what they have, raze it to the ground, and firmly implant the durable European brand. This, the missionaries and colonial governments pursued, with more zeal than respect, wisdom and foresight. Then there is the backlash attitude adopted by cultural racists which says: „Outside“ men have no business messing about with „our“ culture „anymore“. They have no inborn attitude to divine the soul which moves us. The third voice, whilst it recognizes the humanity of the „outside“ men, demands that the critic, the poet, the novelist, the playwright, must be committed. Committed to Socialism, I guess, and not even to humanism. Ulli Beier took the fourth approach: The proper study of a culture, is the life of that culture itself. With humility, join the culture, live within it, immerse yourself in it , and like an „inside“ man using the logic within the culture, deduce the rules of the game from the game itself . Eschewing cultural pontification and ideological prescription, preferring acculturation and practical deductive criticism. Ulli Beier has made the choice which gives his contributions a permanent place amongst the peoples whose cultures he has studied and fertilized, and whose imagination he has awaked. 8.30 a.m. April12, 1975 Taban Lo Liyong Chairman, Literature Department University of Papua New Guinea 5
