You like games? Me, too. Join me and experience
games in Bavaria!
I am a passionate gamer, you know. I also like meeting people and creating something
new with them. That is why I love my job as Project Manager Games at the business
incubator WERK1 and as companion of Games/Bavaria, the umbrella brand of the Bavarian
games industry. Thanks to my passion, I was able to gather great experience during the last
years. At the trade fair gamescom, I had the opportunity to host the community booth of
the Bavarian games industry with many Bavarian companies. I also helped organizing the
fantastic community events GameCamp Munich and Games/Bavaria Vernissage and was
able to represent our business location at numerous other events.

WERK1, Games/Bavaria
It is very rewarding to see events like these go smoothly and to initiate dialogues –
with students, founders or people working in the games industry. Some look to enter the
industry, others want to learn more about the Bavarian scene and some try to boost their
very own agendas or are eager to get in contact with like-minded people.
All of this is possible here in Bavaria and is actively supported. Above all, by institutions
such as the FFF Bayern, the MediaNetwork and the WERK1, by the local associations as well
as our Ministry which proactively seeks the dialogue with our industry.
We have put texts, pictures and a lot of thoughts into this product to provide a valuable
tool to everyone interested and to answer their questions. The following pages contain
useful and precise information: contact persons, contacts, descriptions of events, success
stories, and a lot more. Pages 22 et seq. are rather plain, yet they might be the most
important part. Here you can find the register of companies with a comprehensive overview of Bavarian services, developers, and publishers, to let you know who to call.
Sincerely,
I am sure you want to experience and shape Bavaria’s vivid games community.

The meeting point of the games community
WERK1 is set up to be a start-up center for
the digital world, a common port of call for
members of the games industry.
State Secretary Franz Josef Pschierer (second from the left) appreciates the modern architecture, too, with its stage and free-floating
bridge with a view over the lower floor.

WERK1
WERK1 offers an ideal setting for events like
the Global Game Jam.
WERK1 also hosts several games events,
is the home of the cultural association for
video games with its huge games archive,
and offers a gaming zone.
Bavaria’s state capital has a new attraction: Since
2012, game developers, start-up companies, and
entrepreneurs have been drawn to WERK1 – the
incubator for digital start-ups in Bavaria.
On November 25, 2015, the CEO of WERK1, Franz
Glatz, held a speech about the expansion of the
business incubator.
Close to Munich’s nightlife district Haidhausen and
ideally connected to city center, main station, and
the airport, the start-up center WERK1 demonstrates
the huge creative diversity of Bavaria. With the
extension of its floor area to 4,000 m² at the end of
2015, the incubator provides co-working and office
space for 45 start-ups and an infrastructure for
workshops, lectures and conferences, all under one
roof. WERK1 constitutes an important networking
junction in Bavaria for founders and creatives of the
games, IT and media industries.
Its mission: to be a common home to creatives,
developers and young entrepreneurs – a start-up
center for the digital economy. “WERK1, being the
hotspot for the digital start-up scene, offers the best
conditions for start-ups looking to network within
the game industry. Here they all meet up: founders
and the established, indies and established studios, universities and investors as well”,
explains Franz Glatz, CEO of WERK1.
WERK1 offers everything young companies need for growing and for success. The tenants praise the startup-friendly environment with its affordable rental fees, flexible time
periods and shared areas. An inviting games corner, including consoles and games, and an
open kitchen with its brilliant “coffee station” create a relaxing atmosphere in which you
can meet like-minded individuals, present ideas and gather opinions. Where voluntary
employees of the VSK Games Lounge chat with game developers of Klonk UG,
Fairytale Distillery and Icebird Studios – all located on the premises of WERK1,
inspirations and ideas are bound to take form – over lunch. To turn those ideas
into products, WERK1 offers specific support e. g. in form of workshops on
entrepreneur coaching and project financing.
If you prefer some peace and quiet: There are doors in WERK1.
Close them behind you. Now, in this oasis of calm, you can carry
out your plans undisturbed.

Media Network Bavaria
Like its games industry, Bavaria’s impact as a media location has grown over the years. To
preserve and boost its appeal, it is important to expedite innovation, establish networks,
promote success stories and continuously refine educational opportunities. All these
activities fall under the umbrella of Media Network Bavaria.
Media Network Bavaria is the media location agency for the state of
Bavaria. Supporter is the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Media, Energy and Technology. Its main task is to strengthen Bavaria’s
role as media location. These are its four areas of responsibility:
Network building, location PR and communication, education
and training, and the identification and promoting of
trends.
Network building is connecting companies
and media professionals in the media industry
through events, workshops and network
meetings of all kinds. Furthermore,
connections to other industries need to be shaped, as there is a high
potential for innovation at the intersections.
One topic of the series of cross-industry networking events is
for example “Healthcare meets Games & IT”. This project connects
medical professionals, game developers and computer scientists.
Information about current topics of the Bavarian media industry
can be found online at www.medien.bayern, and in the annual
print magazine medien.bayern.

The fact that a mere 7 % of the games industry’s overall sales in Germany are

the business location need more support and funding. Bavaria has been actively

Games Bavaria Munich e.V.
For many years, Bavaria and especially Munich
as a business location have been among the most
important clusters of the computer and video games
industry. This is mainly due to the unique mix of local
businesses, small independent developer teams, and
the German branches of international publishers. Also
in respect to funding, Bavaria’s position is outstanding
within Germany due to the very committed Bavarian
Film and Television Fund and the periodic hosting of
the German Computer Game Awards.
Bavaria has become a vital business
location for the development of groundbreaking games made in Germany. In recent
years, a great deal has happened in the
free state. Nowadays, young teams from all
over Germany are settling in the region and
benefitting from the locational advantages.
We are thrilled to see that politics have
obviously recognized the industry’s potential,
and that Bavaria has good opportunities
to keep pace in the international game
development industry.
In early 2015, we founded our
industry association and finally
emancipated as an industry. In
2016, we aim to continue to build
on the foundation laid. It is going
to be a challenging year: With the
funding instruments already being
at the limits of their capacity, we
are excited for the budget increase
expected in 2017.

A sensation at the German Developer Award 2014: the MD.H alumni of
Mimimi Productions wins three awards with their adventure game “The
Last Tinker” – only three years after the foundation of their studio!
At the turn of the year 2015/16, exactly 100 Gamedesign
students were registered at the Media Design University
of Applied Sciences (MD.H). According to the MD.H, 85 %
of them will enter the games industry – or be successful
with their own start-up studio – after they have finished
their Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. Founders and Bavaria,
a perfect match. MD.H professor Dominik Mieth: “Thanks
to the Media Network Bavaria and Games/Bavaria, the
games industry in Bavaria has merged. It is easy for young
developers to become a part of this network.” What might
it become? Well, in 2006 Alexander Kehr and Christian
Kluckner founded Chimera Entertainment. Eight years later,
their studio sold millions of copies of the strategy game
“Angry Birds Epic” worldwide. Things like that happen
under white and blue skies.

The odd birds and pigs from
“Angry Birds” are the stars of the
tactical role playing game “Angry
Birds Epic”, which was produced
in Munich.
With more than 60 million downloads worldwide, “Angry Birds Epic” is Germany’s most successful roleplaying
game. It was created in the heart of Munich.
The odd birds from “Angry Birds” are usually attributed to the Finnish publisher Rovio. The
spin-off “Angry Birds Epic”, however, was created at Chimera Entertainment in Munich, the
biggest studio of the remote control productions rcp family of developers. The Munich-based
founder Hendrik Lesser commented the success: “The game combines the world renowned
Angry Birds brand with the popular concept of Japanese role playing games and boasts
superior product quality.”
Christian Kluckner of Chimera Entertainment, Hendrik Lesser of remote control and
Anastasios Katapodis of Rovio are celebrating
the successful launch of “Angry Birds Epic” in
Munich’s party location Lebenslust.
The fact that “Angry Birds Epic” has been downloaded more than 60 million times after
the release in June 2014 may be partially due to the business location: “Bavaria provides
excellent training opportunities, infrastructure and ease of access. We also appreciate the
support of organizations like the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern (FFF Bayern), Media Network
Bavaria, and Games/Bavaria”, says Hendrik Lesser. Chimera is currently cooperating with Koch
Media for a mysterious AAA mobile game. Another success story?

Ravensburger Digital
Implementing innovative Ideas
with the help of modern technology
and international cooperation:
The hybrid game “Space Hawk”

Ravensburger Digital is a good
example for the success stories this
concept brings forth.
Thomas Bleyer, CEO Ravensburger Digital, and
his 20 employees operate from Munich-Pasing
since 2010.
Nominations for the Innovation and Best Mobile Game Award at the German Developer
Awards 2015 emphasizes the high quality of “Space Hawk”. Everybody is enthusiastic about this
idea: A combination of a mobile game and a haptic toy to appeal to all of our senses. The core
element is the versatile spaceship “Space Hawk”. By using the adventure application on their
smartphones, players unleash a thrilling science fiction story.
At Ravensburger Digital in Munich-Pasing, everything came together during the 18 months of
development. CEO Thomas Bleyer: “We worked out the basic concept in-house. The mobile game
was produced by Deck13 in Frankfurt, the production of the toys was taken care of by our sister
company in Hong Kong. Our team had to coordinate the production of hardware and software
and to bring everything together seamlessly: A great example of teamwork made in Bavaria.”
The idea behind „Space Hawk“:
Games app on the smartphone
plus a traditional toy equals fun
for (almost) all of our senses.

„Space Hawk“ was published in
October 2015 as the first product
from Ravensburger Digitals’s new

GameCamp
A meeting point for everyone interested in games
The homo ludens is a social creature that
loves to share the passion for games with
others. Take the GameCamp (GC) in Munich for
example, the central meeting point for game
developers, media students, culture enthusiasts, and the curious, taking place annually in
early summer.
GameCamp is like a convention – but totally different.
Every spring, about 200 like-minded people come together. In 2015, they gathered at the Media Design University
of Applied Sciences Munich. The visitors are interested
in every aspect of games: Code, sound, text, graphics,
design, culture. They communicate, join talks, and listen
to contributors who spontaneously decided to pick up the
microphone. Just like a convention. But different. Spur-ofthe-moment. The people decide on contributors and
topics via show of hands and applause. You have
to experience it yourself.
GameCamp Munich: Every spring, Munich turns into a meeting point for games
enthusiasts, who listen closely to captivating talks.
At the GameCamp, everything’s about spontaneity.
Whether Alexander Zacherl of Fairytale Distillery, for
example, should give a talk about community building for
the roleplaying project “Das Tal”, is decided by the visitors.

opportunities to participate creates a casual environment that constitutes an ideal breeding ground for

Global Game Jam
48 hours of nonstop creativity
Playing makes you creative. The annual Global Game Jam
(GGJ) proves that point. For 48 hours, artists, designers
and developers get together all over the world to create
new games. The Bavarian scene is also taking part.
Once again, the GGJ 2016 has been a global event. At the end of
January, creative people gathered at exactly 537 different locations
all over the world. In Bavaria, the event was hosted by the business
incubator WERK1. Everyone involved reached for the same goal:
To team up with other creative people and to create games within
48 hours. That is what the Game Jam is all about. Once a year, game
designs are drafted, programs are developed, board games are sketched
on paper. After 48 hours, time is out. The results of these intense days
and nights are reviewed by the participants – a special experience open
to everyone.
At the business incubator WERK1 in Munich, creative Bavarians annually gather
to work on game designs together.
Some participants
bring cutting-edge
equipment and
focus nonstop on the
implementation of an
idea for a new game.
They have 48 hours

GamifyConference
Games and Business
Use games to impress your customers, motivate
your employees, and reach your business goals:
The GamifyConference shows you how this works.
Games are more than just a pastime. They make education a pleasure
and motivate the players to learn. The GamifyConference provides the latest
findings of neurosciences, psychology, and game design thinking. This
event is organized by the Association of the Bavarian Economy vbw and
GAMIFY now! and is supported by Games Bavaria Munich e.V. and the
federal association GAME e.V.. The latest case studies and Best Practices
provide insights into the measurable efficiency of Gamification and
Serious Games for business goals.
Among the speakers:
Franz Josef Pschierer,
State Secretary,
Ministry of Economics
and Media, Energy
and Technology
In February 2016, the GamifyConference initiated by the Bavarian
Business Association debuted at the “ConferenceCenter Haus der
Bayerischen Wirtschaft” in Munich.
