NEUER MARKETING-AUFTRITT // NEW MARKETING IMAGE NEUES MOTTO, NEUE RICHTUNG // NEW MOTTO, NEW DIRECTION Competence in Solutions. // Competence in Solutions. This is the new motto KHS chose for its presentation at this year’s drinktec in Munich. “It is a strong, confident motto which will serve as our yardstick from now on,” Chief Sales Officer, Georg Michels explained. ‘Competence in Solutions’ expresses all the values which are important to KHS in a single phrase: experience, expertise, closeness to the market, customer orientation, quality. KHS AG is focusing on an integrated approach to solutions, from line design right through to disposal of old lines. It is above all this holistic approach that is to be communicated more forcefully in future. Accordingly, the company is also taking a new direction in marketing: the topic of solution competence will be shifted much more into the center of the long-term marketing concept than in the past. 03 WRAPAROUNDSHRINKPACKER // WRAP-AROUND SHRINK PACKER EIN MULTITALENT DER VERPACKUNGSTECHNIK // MULTI-TALENTED PACKAGING TECHNOLOGY Die Vielfalt an Verpackungen nimmt kein Ende – der WrapAroundShrinkPacker (Innopack WSP) trägt der Flexibilität der Verpackungshersteller Rechnung und ergänzt die Baureihe Advanced der KHS um ein weiteres leistungsfähiges Funktionsmodul. // There is no end to the sheer diversity of packaging. The Innopack WSP wrap-around shrink packer does full justice to the required flexibility of the packaging manufacturer, adding a further efficient function module to the KHS Advanced series. Was der WrapAroundShrinkPacker leistet? // The KHS Advanced series is finally complete. The youngest member of the Advanced family, the wrap-around shrink packer, was in- troduced at drinktec. More than anything, it is the flexibility of this packaging all-rounder based on its modular design that makes people so enthusiastic about it. Function modules can be added to or removed again according to customer requirements. It is this ability to transform that makes this professional packaging system particularly future proof. What are the capabilities of the wrap-around shrink packer? It can process various products for the beverage, food, and non-food industries quickly and cost-effectively, achieving a peak capacity of up to 100 cycles a minute. Cans, jars, and PET bottles can be packed as stably as canisters, beverage carton, and pre-packed products. In addition to trays and tray shrink packaging, the new generation of machines is able to produce wrap-around and wraparound shrink products. Whether they are made of reinforced or corrugated cardboard, the wrap-around shrink packer ensures that all the products remain securely packed on their journey around the globe. The trade show visitors at drinktec found the servo motors with integrated servo controllers particularly fascinating. A drive technology that facilitates troubleshooting in the event of malfunctions and, moreover, comes with less wiring in the machine and a more compact switch cabinet. The products are guided safely throughout the entire packaging process. Gentle product handling has top priority. This also applies to film wrapping and the shrink process. Following wrapping in accurately cut film, the products enter a shrink tunnel equipped with either an electric or a more ecologically sound alternative gas heater. The ecological versions not only save up to 50% on energy costs, and reduce CO2 emissions noticeably. A further plus point of the KHS wraparound shrink packer is its maximum userfriendliness. Format changeover and other adjustments can be carried out very easily at the push of a button or even partly mechanically. In addition, the machine’s modern design allows easy, almost unrestricted access to every part of this new multi-talent. // This fast and precise specialist can produce tray and tray shrink packs besides wrap-around cartons of very different shapes. Outputs of up to 100 cycles per minute are possible for PET products, for example. KHS PERFORMANCE 04 DAS INNOVATIVE MESSE-HIGHLIGHT // THE INNOVATIVE TRADE SHOW HIGHLIGHT INNOPET BLOMAX SERIE IV – DIE NEUE STRECKBLASMASCHINE // THE NEW STRETCH BLOW MOLDER Die InnoPET BLOMAX Serie IV gehörte zu den technologischen Highlights der drinktec 2009. // The Series IV InnoPET BLOMAX was one of the technological highlights of drinktec 2009, clearly trumping the previous Series III. It meets customer requirements for production capacities, sustainability, and reduced overall operating costs at top level. Sogar namhafte Mitbewerber „Neben Komplettanlagen- und Lösungskompetenz standen bei Gesprächen mit Kunden und neuen Interessenten umfassende bahnbrechende Innovationen, die KHS anlässlich der drinktec präsentierte, im Vordergrund.“ // “Conversations with customers and prospective customers centered on the all-embracing, ground-breaking innovations presented by KHS at drinktec as well as complete lines and competence in solutions.“ Roland Flach, Vorstandsvorsitzender KHS AG // Chief Executive Officer of KHS AG attestierten uns anerkennend, dass wir unsere Hausaufgaben ordentlich gelöst haben. Zusammen mit allen KHS-Kolleginnen und -Kollegen können wir stolz auf diese neue Leitmaschine in einer PET-Linie sein!“ // Approximately 1,500 Blomax stretch blow molders have been sold from Hamburg throughout the world since PET stretch blow molding technology was invented more than 35 years ago. Drinktec was not the first occasion at which people were impressed by the fact that not one single machine has had to be taken back in all those years: proof of mature product quality, high-class, customer-oriented design, consistent added value, and a very high level of efficiency. Compared to the preceding Series III, the new BLOMAX Series IV includes improvements – in particular the energy consumption, processing stability, machine availability, and lastly the cost per bottle produced – which even experts thought scarcely possible. Following its preliminary development oriented to customer requirements over a period of almost four years, market readiness of this latest generation of InnoPET Blomax Series IV machines for drinktec 2009 coincided with a period of noticeable investment restraint. It is all the more pleasing to note that the majority of the exhibitors consider drinktec a means of encouraging confidence and investment, “There is new life in the industry again,” was the widespread opinion at the leading technology trade show where all the top decision makers in the beverage and liquid food industry were learning about current KHS developments. This new generation of stretch blow molders has most certainly contributed towards optimism. Frank Haesendonckx, Product Manager for Stretch Blow Molding Technology (KHS Corpoplast), says of the impressive feedback on the BLOMAX Series IV introduced, “The response to the new InnoPET Blomax has even exceeded our expectations. I think it’s safe to say that the Blomax Series IV was the star of the innovations at the trade show. Even well known competitors respectfully acknowledged we have learned our lesson well. Together with all our colleagues at KHS we can be proud of this new leading machine in a PET line.” // At the KHS trade show booth, interested visitors were given detailed and individual information on the technical characteristics and performance features of the Series IV. // Going 3D with the KHS powerwall: virtual tours of planned lines proved a real visitor magnet. // The customer can stroll down the aisles of a state-of-the-art line, examine every machine, each component minutely – sometimes from a worm’s-eye view, sometimes from a bird’s-eye view. Then he turns the screen 360° to get one more overall view before leaving the line which actually doesn’t even exist – not yet at least. How is it possible? With the aid of revolutionary 3D line design from KHS. The client can view the planned line even before it is actually built: He can see all the machines and – what’s more, in the right proportions. No wonder that this innovation attracted a particularly large number of visitors at drinktec. Yet, they did not have to stop at just viewing. Using Fly Stick, visitors were able to ‘enter’ the line which was projected onto a giant screen or Powerwall, and vary the speed, location, and angle of view as required. // Perfect planning in place of computer games: the powerwall with 3D glasses. Endless numbers of fascinated visitors seized the chance to ‘walk’ into a line and experience the advantages of 3D line design with precise 3D laser scanning. With forward-looking 3D technology, KHS enables customers to examine the lines they have ordered critically and in detail while they are still in the planning phase. Is the chosen layout of the individual machines and components the best? Does the size of the line fit the dimensions on the building exactly? Are the machines easy to access and operate? Does the line layout make sense from a logistics standpoint? 3D inspection gives clear answers to these and many more questions. In this way, desired modifications can be integrated into the design at an early stage. Clear added value for any company since this technology achieves a degree of precision which architectural drawings alone cannot provide. This gives customers the greatest confidence in terms of design and security of investment. However, where do all the data for the three-dimensional line design come from? For this, KHS uses another modern instrument, 3D laser scanning. The laser can measure empty production halls just as accurately as areas already equipped with line technology. Crucial points such as varying heights are selected with precision and can be taken into consideration later. Thanks to laser scanning, new, complete lines and individual modules to be integrated into the whole machine fleet can be produced exactly in accordance with customers’ needs. In addition, the 3D laser gives companies who are not intending to extend or modify their lines at the present time the chance to record the current ‘as built’ state of their lines. Then customized retrofits can also be planned at a later date, this can be done directly on site at customers’ premises if required. 07 // For several years now KHS Corpoplast has been doing pioneer work in the development of stretch blow molding technology for manufacturing PET bottles. Modern plastic bottles of impressive design and stability are being created at the Bottles & ShapesTM Center in Hamburg. Visitors at the KHS booth at drinktec 2009 could therefore learn about the latest innovation, a 0.5-liter PET bottle weighing a mere 6.4 grams. With a filling volume of half a liter, the SixPointFour model (SPF) is the lightweight among PET bottles. The weight reduction benefits not only consumers but also the environment. Reducing resources and functionality – no contradiction Material savings of up to 50 % compared to conventional PET bottles of the same size, less to recycle – the SPF saves resources and so fully meets today’s requirements. Moreover, it was possible to further improve the functionality of the bottle. Filling, labeling, palletizing, and conveying the bottle pose no problems. KHS Corpoplast provides all-embracing competence and professional service throughout the entire PET sector. The InnoPET Blomax and BloFill series have long since become established on the market as efficient stretch blow and filling systems. With the SixPointFour bottle, KHS proves once again that, given the right expertise, a good idea can quickly become a marketable system. // Underfilled bottles, crooked caps or labels, and leaks are all flaws that can annoy customers and tarnish the supplier‘s image. Intelligent quality control ensures that flaws of this kind do not occur in the first place or are spotted in advance. With the Innocheck series, KHS is taking new avenues in inspection technology. Complex hardware extensions, large and expensive spare parts depots, and downtime resulting from complex problem correction are now things of the past. Innocheck offers a future-proof overall concept for companies wishing to have a much clearer and simpler quality management structure. All the components of quality assurance are managed by a central control unit called Innocheck CUB. Hardware and software are perfectly adapted to one another. Custom-made inspection The required inspection units can be selected, installed, configured, and connected quickly in accordance with the modular design principle. Customers can assemble individual command sequences from numerous ready-made program elements. Simply enter and save the necessary parameters, that‘s all! Once familiar with the Innocheck system, customers can extend the system within only a few minutes by adding another control unit with just a few clicks or by touching the screen a few times. The structures and functions of the Innocheck CUB graphical user interface displayed on a touch screen are always the same. What customers can change as required is the language. The fact that the variety of drinks, containers, and labels is steadily increasing on the market is evident. For this reason, the KHS Innocheck series stands for maximum flexibility and compatibility. The goal is to reduce the number of flaws and increase line efficiency. Only then will bottles with crooked labels be rare occurrences. // KHS Innocheck is an innovative and future-proof inspection technology with a common platform for all inspection applications. If required, it is also capable of learning, with the Innocheck software able to register the differences between correctly and incorrectly applied labels on its own. // The intralogistics partnership between KHS and SSI Schäfer is aimed at providing standardized solutions and well-coordinated technology. // Since drinktec it’s official: in the future KHS will be working together with SSI Schäfer, the intralogistics experts from Giebelstadt, Germany. The pilot phase has shown that the two companies complement each other perfectly and, together, they can now provide their customers with even better systems than they have been able to individually up until now. As an alliance, KHS and SSI Schäfer have already demonstrated their powers of innovation in projects for Carlsberg, Budweiser, and Campina. Founded in 1937, today SSI Schäfer is represented in more than 50 countries worldwide. The range of products and services extends from storage technology to recycling with the result that the collaboration between SSI Schäfer and KHS represents a joint venture between two leading market players. Supply availability is top priority The aim of what is intended to be a long-term partnership is the sustainable improvement and intelligent control of the material and information flow of one company. Increasing cost pressure and greater product variety make it necessary to continuously optimize existing processes based on a strict concept. Only those who are able to deliver are ready for the market. From receiving, producing, and storing goods to shipping and delivering them, it is important to exploit existing capacity to the fullest and maximize productivity. KHS and SSI Schäfer check and analyze all the processes, identify where there is potential for improvements, and deduce strategic handling recommendations. This means that customers will be receiving integrated, one-stop shop solutions in the future. Storage, order picking, shipping, and conveying systems are modernized and adapted to the relevant supporting IT programs so that minimum storage periods and highest availability are not mutually exclusive. This is done in part by implementing tried and tested industry standards and partly by developing new approaches to solutions. Fully automatic or semi-automatic technologies are used depending on customers’ requirement profiles. Or, as KHS logistics expert Jochen Bernhard puts it: “As much automation as necessary, but as little as possible.” Sometimes even small organizational innovations are sufficient to achieve a large positive effect. Transparency in all procedures As with line design, internal, operating logistics processes can be displayed and refined with the aid of 3D computer animation. Much in keeping with transparency – the keyword of modern intralogistics. Once the current processes have been thoroughly examined and further developed, the new course should be followed consistently. Naturally, not without the necessary degree of flexibility which allows further modification at any time. Wherever changes are to be carried out, KHS and SSI Schäfer provide their customers with reliable service in all issues concerning change management. Kurz- und langfristig. this includes energy consumption, material usage, and operating costs, spare parts procurement, and the safety and availability of all components, as well as the maintenance and expansion capabilities of KHS lines. Following market launch, all KHS components undergo continuous, regular checks with a view to optimization. Whether new processes, techniques, or new materials, whether CO 2 emissions, chemicals, or material usage, all the options for improvement are constantly explored. // Whether stretch blow molders, bottle washers, or packaging machines, KHS gives sustainability in the development of technological concepts high priority. washing lines that must meet the highest of requirements with regard to microbiological safety and hygiene. The cleaning process is a complex interplay of various measures and required huge quantities of fresh water in the past. “Lines that clean the bottles using standard processes consume about 180 ml of fresh water for every half-liter bottle,” says Peter Mühlbacher, Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Concepts Manager at KHS. If using new technology enables a saving of 50 ml per bottle, given a daily output of 50,000 bottles, the total saving adds up to 2,500 liters of water every day. The result is a reduction in consumption of 850,000 to 900,000 liters per year, depend- ing on changeover and maintenance periods. In addition to cutting the cost of fresh water, environmental damage from wastewater is also reduced as well as the cost of wastewater disposal. “The KHS savings concept for the Innoclean series bottle washing system enables even greater savings,” Peter Mühlbacher emphasizes. “Here maximum water consumption of about 100 ml of water per bottle is technically possible. Naturally, with exactly the same cleaning quality.” Continuous line optimization Reducing fresh water consumption of bottle washing is only one aspect of the KHS strategy on sustainability. Besides eco-friendliness, // Sustainable responsibility is firmly anchored in company policy at KHS and in accordance with the strategic triad of socially conscientious action, ecologically targeted behavior, and economically successful financial management. Sparing use of resources, minimum energy consumption and preventing ecological damage are vital prerequisites of sustainable production which pays off in the short and long run. Exemplary practice – the resource water KHS fleshed out its own concept of sustainability at drinktec in the simple formula: the less energy and resources used and the less environmental damage, the more efficiently and sustainably the production lines work. This was clearly illustrated in the example of bottle Ökologie und Ökonomie schließen einander nicht aus. // Ecology and economy are not mutually exclusive. On the contrary: KHS integrates all verifiable outputoriented parameters into the entire product life cycle. Environmental aspects, particularly energy consumption and energy production, will come into focus increasingly in the coming years. Thanks to rising raw materials costs worldwide, critical consumers and increasingly tighter official regulations, innovative ideas and concepts are particularly sought after here. Incorporating the use of renewables such as solar power, bioenergy, and wind power is just as conceivable as the total replacement of energy sources. At present, the Innopack SP shrink packer is already demonstrating positive effects. A switch from electricity to gas to heat the shrink tunnel for producing the film multipacks is making a noticeable difference in several ways: the heatup time is halved lessening energy costs and CO2 emissions, as well as costs. Once again, KHS Innoclean bottle washing system serves as a good and plausible illustration where new materials have enabled us to redesign carriers and clamping systems for bottle conveying for example. “Replacing the conventional versions with the newly developed Eco bottle carriers has reduced the weight by 25 to 35%,” Peter Mühlbacher estimates. The conveyor drives have benefited immediately thanks to the reduction in the total weight of the bottles and carriers. Their drive motors are moving less load, which means less mechanical stress and lower maintenance costs. At the same time the heat capacity ratio between bottle and carrier system is improved. Eco bottle carriers absorb substantially less heat, thereby reducing energy requirements by more than 30%. The savings on cleaning caustic is about twice this amount: thanks to the new, open design, the carryover of chemicals from the ECO bottle carriers is much less than before. Using new materials which make new and lighter designs with the same mechanical resilience possible pays off equally in terms of both the environment and costs. The fact that the new, optimized holding system also improves product safety rounds off the overall picture of success: ecology and economy derive equal benefit from the new development. In order to achieve successful production in the long term, considering ecological and economic aspects separately makes no sense. Outstanding production results mainly depend on the overall package of sustainable measured variables. This also includes operational safety and future prospects as well as costs and eco-friendliness or the sparing use of energy and resources. However, reliable service has a particularly beneficial effect on sustainability. In the short and long run. // Getting sensitive products into bottles requires modern filling processes that handle the contents with care. With its Innosept Asbofill ABF 610, KHS was able to present a machine at drinktec which satisfies the high requirements of aseptic cold filling in every respect. Asbofill is a modularly designed, completely closed linear machine platform that can be integrated into any production line. The resulting aseptic zone is small and compact and at the same time ensures the maximum aseptic integrity thanks to H2O2 sterilization. The capping unit also included in the aseptic zone is limited to the inside and mouth of the bottle. Another advantage of the machine is that the bottle neck remains untouched during filling. However, it is not only the aseptic safety of Asbofill that is compelling, but also the fully automatic filling, cleaning, and sterilization processes as well as the low energy consumption. Moreover, the machine can be easily operated by means of a touch screen making bottle format changing trouble-free. In short, the Innosept Asbofill provides a flexible, reliable filling process that maintains product quality and the shelf life of sensitive contents.
