The tanmono shows a scene from the land unification festival which is held annually at the anniversary of the comprehensive de-militarization of the island Okinawa. The traditional p rocession is held on May 15th and as a parade is thought to resemble the historical royal tribute missions to Tokyo (edo – nobori) as well as the post-war tradition of demonstrations and rallies that ultimately lead to the event that is commemorated. The depicted tradition of re-enacting stages of the local history by wearing traditionally inspired cloths and bearing historical objects is believed to be a later developed element of the parade. The eclectic mixing of historical ages as seen at participants wearing 19th century court fashion like blue and golden kimonos while displaying 21st century protest traditions like raising balloons is a major feature and said to be unique to this special parade. A contemporaneous text is quoted to call the tradition “an animated human timeline formed to celebrate the overcoming of history.” The tanmono is a fabric roll out of which a kimono is crafted. 2 Yuken Teruya, Heroes: Obama Gerahmte Bingata Färbtechnik auf Leinen /Framed Bingata technique on linen, 2011 3 Yuken Teruya, Scarlet Birds, Crimson Sky Kimono, Bingata Färbtechnik auf Seide /Bingata technique on wild silk, 2010 4 Yuken Teruya, You-I, You-I Kimono, Bingata Färbtechnik auf Leinen /Bingata technique on linen, 2002–2005 Humboldt Lab Dahlem – Probebühne 4 5 Hofgewand /Court dress Vor 1879, Baumwolle, in Bingata-Technik gefärbt / Pre-1879, cotton, dyed in Bingata technique, Shuri, Okinawa Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Ethnologisches Museum, Inv.
