With their latest EP, Luna City Express present us a
sound that feels like they have spent some lonely years
in Luna City sharpening their skills.
Was uns Luna City Express auf ihrer neuesten EP
abliefern, klingt so, als hätten sich Norman Webber und
Marco Resmann (Phage) für Jahre nach Luna City
zurückgezogen und kräftig Skills getankt.
“Fresh” (MHR 019) and “White Russian” (MHR 021)
already have been Samurai among House records, now
these four tracks here are full Jedi knights. With an
unbelievable sleaziness, LCE wander between styles:
“Met Harvey in a Bar” (a1) is pure 21st Century Funk,
while “Crazy Planet” (a2) shows you how kickin' Deep
House sounds in 2006. “Mars Attack” (b1) is a Berlinstyled Techhouse-bomb and “Kick your ass” (b2) is a
clever piece with dominant bass and sound modulations
reminiscent of Keith Tucker: “I’m going to kick your ass”,
says an unmistakable vocal line.
However, this irresistible groove of “Crazy Planet”
doesn’t come totally unexpected: Over the last months,
Phage has become one of Berlin’s most sought-after
underground producers – being responsible for
acclaimed Phage & Daniel Dreier records on Highgrade
or Klang and playing an important part in the production
of Pan Pot tracks (being released on Mobilée and
Einmaleins Musik).

Waren „Fresh“ (MHR 019) und „White Russian“ (MHR
021) bereits Samurais unter den House-Platten, sind
diese vier Tracks allesamt Jedi-Ritter. Im Ernst, es wirkt
fast unverschämt, mit welcher Leichtigkeit sich LCE
mittlerweile zwischen den Styles bewegen. „Met Harvey
in a Bar“ (a1) atmet unentdeckten 21st Century Funk.
“Crazy Planet” (a2) erklärt auf der Tanzfläche, wie
kickender, kitschfreier Deep House im Jahr 2006 klingen
kann. „Mars Attack“ (b1) rockt den Schalk im Berliner
Techhouse-Nacken. Und „Kick your ass“ (b2) ist ein
cleverer Track mit einem dominanten Bass, KeithTucker-mäßigen Soundmodulationen und den unmissverständlichen Vocals: „I’m going to kick your ass“.
Und wie sie das tun! Ganz unverhofft kommt die
unwiderstehlich präzise Groove- und Sounddichte der
„Crazy Planet EP“ allerdings nicht. In den letzten
Monaten hat sich Phage zu einem der gefragtesten
Berliner Underground-Producer entwickelt. Seine Maxis
als Phage & Daniel Dreier (auf Highgrade und Klang)
sowie die von ihm mitproduzierten Pan-Pot-Tracks (auf
Mobilée und Einmaleins Musik) landeten ausnahmslos
in den einschlägigen Charts.

Really like Matthias Tanzmann's Moon Harbour imprint with its quirky, off kilter style that usually manages to
combine deep house with live sounding instruments with more cutting edge reduced sounds. "Met Harry in a Bar" is
very much in that vein with its warm percussive dominated groove. "Crazy Planet" is a more tracky affair with little
key interjections giving it a slight jazz flavour. "Mars Attack" is a little heavier with its big bass drum, quirky spoken
word vocals and pumping groove. Last up "Kick Your Ass" keeps things on a similar tip with its strong focus on the
drums. A solid ep.

Marco Resmann aka Phage und Norman Webber haben für die dritte EP ihres Luna City Express Projekts auf
Moon Harbour ihre Idee von House noch mal um einiges erweitert und haben in jedem der 4 Tracks genug Raum
um verschiedenste Momente und Grenzen aufzubrechen, die die Tracks eher wie Erzählungen als wie Tracks
wirken lassen. Ich mag das, wenn z.B. "Met Harvey In A Bar" erst im letzten Viertel wirklich sagt worauf es aus war,
oder warum das Treffen anders ausging als erwartet. "Crazy Planet" mit der knochentiefen Bassdrum und den
Alieneffekten, den desolaten Vocals und frech knapp unter der Wahrnehmungsschwelle eingeschleusten Samples
enpuppt sich dann auch als jazziger multipel-pianophrener Housegorilla, "Mars Attacks" als Bulldozer für verwirrte
Freunde krabbelnder grüner Plastikmonster und "Kick Your Ass" als nervös reduktionisitisches Funkgetier am
Rande des Nervenzusammenbruchs. Und fällt dadurch etwa irgendetwas auseinander oder wirkt brüchig? Nie.

Hey, das sind vier Tracks die mal eindeutig in die House-Schublade gesteckt werden dürfen. Alle vier Nummern
klingen total funky, sind beeindruckend abwechslungsreich und bedienen sich aller Varianten und Spielarten von
House. Der Titel der EP ist sehr bezeichnend, wie tollwütige Fitnesstrainer treiben Luna City Express ein
Gummipuppenballett an schrägen Sounds und Samples über die Tanzfläche. Dicht an dicht blitzen ihre
verschmitzten Ideen auf. Bei soviel Eindrücken bleibt einem schon mal die Spucke weg, aber unglaublich was hier
so alles Verbindungen eingeht. Sehr sportliche Platte und irgendwie unfassbar. AUTOR: TH
