It is a citizen’s right, but also a legal obligation to vote. This achievement is recognized as one of the most visible steps in Brazil’s independence. Following a school tradition of celebrating Brazilian Independence Day on September 7th, we worked with ideas that would help people remember with pride what this civic date means to our school. This year, the celebration’s theme connected environmental and political issues through an interdisciplinary perspective of history and geography. The theme involving elections proved to be appropriate and motivating for the development of theoretical and practical knowledge about citizenship, and also served as a link to environmental sustainability. To create the link between elections and sustainability, 12th grade Brazilian History and Geography students simulated an election at school, creating fictional candidates: the plastic bags and the Eco-bags (biodegradable or reusable). For discussion and choice of candidates, during the days prior to the election, and 4 Window to ISC • December / Dezembro 2010 Em outubro de 2010 os brasileiros seguem às urnas eletrônicas para votar. Para o debate e escolha dos candidatos, durante os dias que antecederam as eleições, nos intervalos de aulas, in between classes, it was decided to hold public rallies at school where the contestants presented their proposed uses, advantages and disadvantages of each type of bag. The main purpose was to show students how candidates could submit relevant and true information, and leave out and even neglect the reality, in order to win the elections. The rallies prior to the school election were crucial, because at this point, it led to discussions that caused students to make choices and provided ways for the voter/student to responsibly define their candidates. Since the election involved environmental issues, it was also possible during the rallies to explore the importance of natural resources, ecological and social impact to raise sensitization and environmental awareness towards the relationship between society and nature in the contemporary context. foram organizados comícios públicos no espaço da escola onde os canditados apresentavam suas propostas de usos, vantagens e desvantagens de cada tipo de sacola. Finally, given the project’s purposes, TRE-PR provided an electronic voting machine to be used at ISC throughout the day of September 2nd. All school staff and students were able to exercise the right to vote. It was the first experience for our students in an election setting that simulated the entire electoral process with reality. The final part of the project involved school presentations and discussions, that brought to light key issues of democracy and environmental sustainability. It was a discovery moment of the power of democracy in decision making, which became clear in the pride and happiness of the students as they voted. Surely, it was a powerful experience for their entire life. The voting results revealed wisdom and nature as the grand winners. The project continues, as it represents the democratic choice and consciousness of the entire ISC community towards eco-bags. It is not enough just to vote, now let’s turn this proposal into reality! The center is managed by a NGO called Instituto Pró-Cidadania de Curitiba. There are three parts to the center. The center has a museum of valuable antiques that were thrown away by people which include old computers, TVs, cameras, weapons, preserved animals, and even a dentist chair. There is also an educational center and the separating factory. Curitiba’s residents separate their trash into two categories: recyclable and organic/non-recyclable. The center receives over 600 tons of “lixo que não é lixo” every month. There are about 170 people who work separating the trash, which provides needed jobs. The trash is separated on a conveyor belt by hand. The students observed people on both sides of the belt collecting plastic, aluminum, glass, paper, and Styrofoam to put into separate bins. The leftover trash is also separated and taken to a sanitary landfill. The students learned that you can’t recycle napkins, fruit peels, food leftovers, toilet paper, and cellophane. They also learned that there are many uses for recycled materials like making baskets out of magazine paper, roof tiles out of toothpaste tubes, chairs out of plastic bottles and milk boxes. The most important thing that they learned is to remember that most things can be recycled or re-used so you need to separate your trash to help save nature. 7 ISC Celebrates Peace One Day O ISC Celebra um Dia de Paz By / Por Mônica Heinrichs ISC held an assembly on September 21 in order to reflect about peace and to participate in the Peace One Day movement along with millions of people around the world. The overarching theme for this assembly was Harmony. This theme allowed all of us, big and small, to make connections between the musical definition of harmony and what peace and harmony actually mean in our daily lives. As soon as the elementary students arrived in the MP Theater, they were surprised by our middle School band members because they had a fight on stage right before the performance! The fight was actually a skit that the students had rehearsed in class. They acted as if they were in a regular music class and their teachers had been delayed by an emergency. The teachers had left a note with tasks for the students to perform on their own. As they began to work on their tasks, the band students had several disagreements and made hurtful comments to each other. They demonstrated dissonance or discord both in the musical and human relations aspects. After they watched an instructional video called Harmony, the students decided that they needed to apologize and work together in harmony as a team, and without conflict or discord. The band students had a great time as they rehearsed and performed this skit. They also played a challenging song called Concert Overture that demonstrated harmony because they played, “two or more different sounds or pitches at the same time that were pleasing to the ear!” After the surprise skit, 5th grade students acted as presenters and reporters. They welcomed the audience, interviewed the elementary students about the presentations, and announced the different numbers. There was even a 5th grade camera man who filmed the interviews! The high school music students also worked hard to put on this assembly. Our group of four drummers created an energetic rhythm piece where each one played a different type of drum to represent that people can have different ideas and still work together in harmony! Another group from the HS music class chose a popular song, and created and adapted new lyrics for it that spoke of the need for peace in our world. So instead of “Billionaire,” they sang, rapped, and played “Be Aware!” The elementary students also prepared for this event by holding discussions and learning about peace and harmony during their music classes. They learned a song called Dona Nobis Pacem, which in Latin means “give us peace.” Each grade level practiced their part separately in class. Several HS students worked on creating and performing the instrumental accompaniment for the song. At the assembly they sang and played the different parts together for the first time, and produced wonderful and pure harmony that only children’s voices can achieve! Mr. Combs closed the assembly and reminded us that Arbor Day was also being celebrated in Brazil. He then invited Mr. Tim Kenny to help us all reflect on the importance of planting trees in order to keep in harmony with our planet. Students and teachers then had the opportunity to engage in a valuable hands-on experience, and planted approximately 60 trees in the area outside the MP Theater! Congratulations to everyone who presented and to all who attended the Peace assembly. May peace and harmony reign in our lives at school, at home, and on our planet! 9 São Paulo Model United Nations Conference Conferência Modelo das Nações Unidas em São Paulo On Friday, September 10th, several students from ISC traveled to the Graded School in São Paulo to participate in the annual SPMUN conference. Representing China on the security council, the human rights commission, the political committee and the Economic and Social council (ECOSOC), the students simulated the actual workings of the United Nations by writing resolutions, working in caucuses to merge their resolutions with other countries, and debating and defending their country’s positions on key issues. The issues they debated included nuclear weapons in the Middle East, the situation in Afghanistan, the Greek economic crisis, the spread of HIV / AIDS, violence against women, cyber terrorism, and small arms trade regulations – all difficult and important issues. Accompanied by two advisors – Mike Kuhn and Bill Tolley – the following students made the trip a success: Thayara Borges, Macarena Diaz, Hernan Martinez, Carolina Sarturi, Jessica Kenny, Luiza Leão, Pamela Cardoso, Javier Martinez, and Heather Cordon. They all not only were fantastic ambassadors representing China in the conference, but also were ambassadors for ISC. Below are the students’ brief reflections on the trip. Jessica Kenny Despite being nervous, I had a great experience attending my first MUN conference, hosted by the Graded School of São Paulo. Since it was scheduled to be held so early on in the school year, the rest of the ISC MUN group and I had just about four weeks to research and write up resolutions on the conference’s many topics from the People’s Republic of China’s view point. My role at the conference was to play the part of a Chinese delegate in the political committee and stand up for China’s views on the issues of Cyberterrorism and the International Arms Trade Treaty. I was very apprehensive about having to present my resolution to the other delegates from the other schools that would attend the conference, because I felt ill-prepared due to the short amount of time we had for research and my lack of experience with public speaking. When I got to the conference in Sao Paulo I was relieved to find out that there were many delegates from the other schools who were also firsttimers in MUN, but I was disappointed when it came time to debate because many of the delegates were poorly prepared, causing the debate not to run smoothly. What I did enjoy very much was the experience of being in the conference room and getting involved in current world issues. I was very impressed with the charisma of some of the delegates and how well they were able to appeal to the audience. I also had a fun time making new friends as well as bonding with the ISC MUNers on the plane ride and at meal times. From my experience on this trip I learned that having arguments against an opponent delegate is nearly as important as having solid reasons to persuade other delegates to side with my resolution. I also learned that having great public speaking skills and charisma can sometimes be a more effective way to persuade an audience than using substantial evidence. I would definitely like to continue with the MUN program and attend future conferences. conferência de acordo com o ponto de vista da China sobre a questão do ciberterrorismo e o tratado sobre o comércio internacional de armas. What I did enjoy very much was the experience of being in the conference room and getting involved in current world issues.” The MUN trip to Sao Paulo was a great opportunity for me to learn about MUN. We represented China and I learned lots about China’s culture, political system, and views. Learning about a different country was a great chance to argue China’s point of view and realize that each country is different and accept those differences. One thing I noticed at the conference was that the more people were prepared the better the arguments and resolutions were. It helped me learn quickly that it is good to be prepared and really know the country that you are representing and about the other countries’ views. I learned how to use parliamentary procedure with lots of “would the delegate from China please refrain from using personal pronouns.” This trip helped me learn the structure of MUN. My favorite part about the trip was discussing the resolutions and debating with other countries. I enjoyed hearing the views of other countries and trying to compromise with them. It was neat to see who allied with whom. When it came to debating in front of everyone I was a little more afraid, but in a small group I enjoyed showing China’s view with the rest of the countries. The MUN trip was a really great experience that taught me a lot about the UN. My favorite part about the trip was discussing the resolutions and debating with other countries.” Carolina Sarturi Feijo Carolina Sarturi Feijo As my first time in an MUN conference I was apprehensive because there were many procedures and we didn’t have time in school to discuss all of them. Also, we were representing China, and since it is an important country we couldn’t just sit there and do nothing; we had to participate. But the first day went just fine; we interacted with the other people in our committee and made preparations for the actual conference. In the ECOSOC group there was Heather, Hernan and I. Having more people Como minha primeira vez em uma conferência do MUN, estava apreensiva, pois haviam muitos procedimentos e não tivemos tempo na escola para discutir todos eles. Já que a primeira resolução em in my group made the apprehension diminish. Heather and I were taking care of one issue in discussions and Hernan was taking care of the other. The actual conference was intimidating. Since the first resolution in discussion was not ours, we saw other people talking and the chair reminding them to not use personal pronouns. When speaking for a country, people have to speak in third person and can’t use personal pronouns, such as I, we, him, you and others. I think that this rule was the most difficult to follow, not only as first-timer but even the people in our committee who seemed more experiences has problems with it. A única coisa que topics in discussion – we only did for one of the topics this time, due to lack of time. The only thing I did not like in the conference was the fact that our group’s resolution passed to the general assembly, but was not discussed there. Maybe in BRAMUN I will be able to actually participate in the general assembly. If it happens, I will know what to do, because the best way to learn is to observe. Observing, however is not that fun, but reading the messages passed in the conference is. In a conference we cannot speak to other countries and so we pass notes. These notes are read at the end of the conference. People elected the cutest delegate, most annoying delegation, best haircut, among others. It is fun to read and see what people say there. The school did not win any categories in the general assembly, but maybe next time. I am looking forward to it. When the conference just started I had no idea what I was doing, but after a while I started to understand more. I saw how countries merged, how they debated, and I saw how they tried to influence others to talk in favor of their resolutions. To me this was extremely amazing and I wanted to see if I could also negotiate and take a stand. Our country, China, merged the resolution with some other countries, and when it was our turn to explain it, the resolution was completely crushed. Regardless, it was a great experience because for the next trip I will know what to do better. I think that the best part about this trip was definitely the General Assembly where we saw how all our other teammates did and we had a chance to learn from them. For example, Luisa Leao went up in front of so many people and defended China’s idea, personally I could never have done that in my first conference; therefore, I hope that maybe in the future I can learn from her. The next MUN trip will be a lot bigger and I hope that next time I will do better and have more courage to speak. We learn from our mistakes. 14 more eloquent person. It has helped me in my social life too, now I don’t wait as much for people to come talk to me, I can go to them and be my normal self with no regrets. Apart from that, this trip opened my eyes to what is really happening in the world and take on different challenges such as learning how a certain country’s government works, and assume what its response to the different matters at hand in the modern world. The Model United Nations has not only helped my life skills, and my current event awareness, it has helped me to take important decisions in a short period of time, or to think drastically about the different topics discussed today. I believe I will stay in Model United Nations for the rest of my high-school career. The next MUN trip will be a lot bigger and I hope that next time I will do better and have more courage to speak.” Luiza Leão – 10th grade MUN Luiza Leão – 10a série MUN I had been to the SPMUN 2009. This year, however, was so different from my first time. I felt that the whole atmosphere of MUN was overwhelming to me this time. Perhaps it hadn’t happened before because I had only represented Uganda and Croatia in MUN conferences. This time, I was China, and my nation was the constant target of most countries due to the issues being debated, which were mainly Arms Trade and Cyber-terrorism. China has some difficult positions to support, and this is why I enjoyed representing this nation so much. I believe I was more mature this year, attending the SPMUN 2010, and that I could handle things better than my first time there, as a freshman. It was the first conference in which I took the podium within my own committee, and yet I took the podium during nearly the entire meeting. My partner and I were very inspired by the idea of debating real worldwide issues and trying to solve them, and after we spoke in the General Assembly, in front of the entire conference, we were voted the most annoying delegation, which means that we were quite participative. It is hard to understand what MUN is about when you first hear about it. The concept of debating international issues without turning it into a wild debate and at the same time managing to stay awake is sometimes hard to grasp. However, it isn’t until you have been there that you understand what it is like. When you are surrounded by people who know what is going on, who are willing to argue and stress their points and actually contribute to the solutions proposed to some of the world’s most important issues – issues that sometimes cannot be solved by UN members themselves – you experience an exhilaration which is hard to describe. So, after I came back, I felt accomplished. Not only because I did my job well in SPMUN 2010, but because I learned that I can do better at the next conference, and that has made the trip worth every second. My partner and I were very inspired by the idea of debating real worldwide issues and trying to solve them...” Minha parceira e eu estávamos muito inspiradas pela ideia de debater verdadeiras questões internacionais e tentar resolvê-las...” 15 College Visits at ISC Feira de Universidades no ISC One of the most important decisions facing ISC high school students is what college or university to attend after graduation. This can be especially difficult if their choice of location is outside of Brazil. One of the ways in which ISC helps students with their decisions is by providing them with opportunities to meet with visiting college representatives. Throughout the months of September and October, a number of university representatives visit ISC and talk to our high school students. This gives students the opportunity to personally talk to college representatives, learn more about their programs, the college application process and scholarships available. ISC also provides information about career and college fair happening in Curitiba and other cities. This year, the Linden College Tour not only came to Curitiba, but also to the ISC campus. This group started in 1982 and through recruitment tours and consulting, Linden Educational Services, Inc. assists regionally accredited U.S. Universities and regionally accredited U.S. styled/ based universities abroad in their efforts to recruit, enroll and serve international students, striving to be professional, knowledgeable and promote international understanding. In the course of their research, they identified people who lived in the United States prior to exploration and colonization as they researched facts through the Internet and library materials. The students took these facts and turned them into well written structured paragraphs which were displayed on tri-fold boards and illustrated their understanding of the material that was researched. The students then showed understanding of the material they had learned through a hands-on project which was presented to their parents and peers. Teaching students to write a well organized research paper can be dull. But this hands-on method with cooperative learning group interaction and a hands-on presentation of the paper gave excitement to our teaching and learning strategies. The students also created a replica of a Native American home that was typical for their assigned tribe. The trifold boards and shelters were shown as a “walk through museum” for parents and members of the school. Each display told of the tribe’s region, food, clothing, shelter, tools, weapons, ceremonies and customs. During the walk through of the museum, students gave an oral presentation to their visitors describing in detail the interesting facts they had learned about their tribe. Used Book Sale Feira de Livros Usados A book-collecting contest was held in the elementary school sponsored by the PTA. The contest was about bringing books and creating a gigantic book pile. The books of the PTA book pile would then be sold at the used book fair. The winner was the class that got the highest book pile, and the prize was a free book for each student of the class. First grade A got up to 2 inches which is 29 centimeters. First grade B got 10 inches, so 26 centimeters. Second grade got 50 inches which are 127 centimeters. Now let’s move on to third grade who got 71 inches or 180 centimeters. Fourth grade got 55 inches and in centimeters they got 140. Now we come to the final winner! Fifth grade won with 116 inches or 295 centimeters! Some students were interviewed and most of them brought at least some books. All interviewed students said that recycling books is a good thing to do, most of them said that it doesn’t waste books and you can read new ones. For the students that got interviewed it was fun building the book pile because it was something different, it was fun and you missed math period. So fifth grade won and has bought their books. The book sale is over and a lot of books were bought. We look forward for another book pile contest or something similar so that we can have more book sales. 27 4th Grade Memories Memórias da 4ª série in the tournament we had fun and did our best. Guilherme Zart Hoher & An ISC Sport Memory My best memory at ISC so far was the first soccer tournament I played in. We were set to play against the Everest and Bom Jesus schools. I was the goalie for the ISC team. It was time to play versus Everest and the first fifteen minutes of the game went fine. Then suddenly, BOOM! Everest had scored its first goal. Our team was disappointed but continued to play on. In the next few minutes ISC scored its first goal and now it was one to one. Moving into the last part of the game with Everest, they scored two more goals and we lost the game three to one. Against Bom Jesus we kept the score to no goals in the first half. Then twenty minutes into the second half it happened, Boom! They scored a goal and then another goal ten minutes later. My teacher, Ms.Suzy, tried to calm me down. After fifteen minutes I stopped crying. But then we had to go to P.S.L! I felt my eyes getting heavy again after only five seconds, I started to cry again! Then I controlled it and stopped crying. Next we went to recess which was boring because I didn’t have any friends yet! After recess was over I realized we were going to lunch, lunch was horrible! Most of the afternoon, four hours was long and I passed the time by playing with my pencil. I thought the school was too long because in Germany school is only four hours long up to fifth grade. Finally I got home and told my family about my awful first day. Well after a few days I made a new friend, Kayuky! After that I made several more friends making school life at ISC more fun. I started to speak more and more English and every day got easier! Now look at how well I write! Iara Lorenzo & My ISC Singing Experience Memory Imagine having to show your talent to a little less than a hundred mothers, well that was me not to long ago. Hi, my name is Iara Lorenzo and I study at the coolest school ever invented, it’s called ISC. Ok, now on to the memory. I have to admit I love music, but I think my music teacher, Mrs. Mônica had gone too far this time. You know why? Mother’s Day was coming and Mrs. Mônica was planning a super big event. She asked me to sing in front of the mother’s! I couldn’t say no to this wonderful teacher, but I couldn’t say yes either. What if I make a mistake? I’d have to move to Antarctica, or else they would tease me for the rest of my life! “Yes” What? Why did I say yes? I should leave my mouth closed. Forget it, it was too late! After two days I was fine again, I was even having fun practicing the song and helping out with the costumes, I felt great! When presentation day came I was white as a ghost, I didn’t want to eat, play or even move! I have to tell you I was really nervous! First the 1st Graders sang, then the 2nd Graders, and after it was 3rd Grade’s turn, which meant it was our turn. When I started I was more than nervous, but then, hey, I was having fun! My mother told me she almost fainted because of so much proudness and happiness! On that day I lived a simple but important experience. On that day I believed that someday I would become a singer! Thanks, Mrs. Mônica and to all the people at I.S.C. who did, and still do believe in me. Eu era o goleiro do time do ISC. “Sim”! O quê? Por que eu disse “sim”? Eu deveria manter minha boca fechada. 29 New Season in ECC Uma nova estação no ECC By / Por Mari Bolzani, ECC Principal / Diretora do ECC Three important dates were celebrated with a wonderful picnic in September at the ECC center. They are the Arbor Day, Peace Day and the beginning of Spring. On this day the children came to school wearing white clothes, brought delicious and healthy snacks, and made necklaces, head bands and bracelets. At the school, the children learn how to love and respect the nature by their constant visit to the garden, and their freedom to play in the Field among the fruit trees that they have been planting every year during this season, since the year 2001. Now they are big, and are producing shade and fruits. learned at school, read beautiful books on the topic, and planted trees in vases so that they could be taken to the new school. To continue raising the awareness and a love and respect for nature, our ECC children were involved in a variety of activities. A school wide art project went on during the whole month of September and part of October. All the children were involved in the creation of an artistic Spring Board. All of it was done with the use of a number of recyclable materials such as paper rolls, egg cartons, and PET bottles. During the whole week, the children learned about the characteristics of Spring, made connections with what they see in the streets and what they 30 Window to ISC • December / Dezembro 2010 Três importantes datas foram comemoradas com um delicioso piquenique no ECC em setembro: o Dia da Árvore, o Dia da Paz e o Início da Primavera. The World Tomorrow International School of Curitiba Av.
