What do you see as the strengths of Upper Austria in the field of ICT? The combination of excellent educational institutions, high-visibility research facilities and innovative companies qualifies Upper Austria as a site for ICT. Softwarepark Hagenberg, where Software Competence Center Hagenberg (SCCH) is also located, serves as an example of the synergy of these three components. However, we must not view ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in general or in Upper Austria only from the perspective of software companies. The importance of ICT in all branches has led to innovations driven by quite diverse companies. In Upper Austria this includes manufacturing companies. SCCH has strongly focused its research on this target group and thereby helps to promote the IT components of Industry 4.0 (the smart factory). Where do we need to catch up? Upper Austria is well positioned in terms of facilities and structures. The strategic program Innovative Upper Austria 2020 has defined important emphases (e.g., industrial production) in its topical orientation. Nonetheless, from the perspective of a research facility, we would like to see more: more readiness for joint research, more interdisciplinary research, more efficiency in some funding programs. Naturally, stumbling blocks result, especially for such programs with very low chances of success (some under 5%), where, despite highly assessed research topics, a lack of funding throttles them. Such poor chance of success encumbers finan- Schwerpunt Forschung / Focus Research treibt damit die IT-Komponente von Industrie 4.0 voran. Dort merken wir schon sehr stark den Kampf 11 SCCH Magazin 3/2015 cing of applications, for numerous applications must be submitted for one to pay off. However, in general I believe that we have good general conditions in Upper Austria. How was the past fiscal year for your company and what are your ex pectations for the next years? At the end of 2014 we successfully closed a funding period that was important for us. With continued funding and our expansion course, now in 2015 we are launching our new COMET activities. How do you see the shortage of IT expertise in Upper Austria and how does this affect your business? As a research facility we need primarily university graduates. Here we are well aware of the competition for these human resources. We have a highly international team, but we seek more Austrian applicants, especially women. We have taken measures to be perceived as an um die Arbeitskräfte. Auch 12 SCCH Magazin 3/2015 attractive employer and have even extended our outreach to making technical majors in higher education more appealing to secondary school pupils. We particularly focus on women and seek to make computer science and research work palatable for them. Each year we offer a series of trial internships in the context of the Talented Pupil Internship program. During the Long Night of Research we present our research results to the general public and hope thereby to evoke enthusiasm for software research. We offer university students internships with us. We also provide and supervise master and PhD work. Which technologies and solutions will see increased customer demand this year? We have seen increased customer interest in the field of data management. Due to the huge amounts of data that accrue in companies (sensor and production data along with planning data), data acquisition and analysis as well as prognosis models have assumed an important role. Other buzzwords are topics concerning the quality of software (formal methods in software engineering, domain-specific languages, software analysis) as well as optimization of business processes. What was your showcase project in the last twelve months? This would be our research project with B. Braun Medical Kft. of Budapest. The company employs rigorous methods for the development of operation and control software for dialysis devices. Due to their proven effectiveness in modeling safetycritical systems, rigorous methods are used to solve problems that occur in the development of B. Braun’s extracorporeal blood treatment systems. 13 SCCH Magazin 3/2015 of formal methods in this context become evident already in the analysis and modeling of the elements and components of the system: Formal methods not only support the safe and secure development of a system; they also contribute to achieving corresponding certification. Furthermore, the artifacts ensuing from the overall process are traceable and interoperable. The use of rigorous, model-based development methods in the field of medical systems with high safety demands leads to system models that can be verified (e.g., via mathematical proofs and model testing) and validated (e.g., via animation and prototyping). They also provide the basis for mutual understanding among the various stakeholders. In this way, products with especially stringent safety constraints can be convincingly modeled and verified. Simultaneously, formal methods reduce technical complexity because they are comprehensible for participants who lack corresponding expertise. In the realm of the K1 program line of the COMET subsidy program, the long-range cooperation with Company Partners was continued. Turnover (excl. subsidies) in COMET achieved 95.2% of the preceding fiscal year. Because the COMET funding period ended 31 December 2014, the volume (sales revenue as well as funding) in COMET was limited to the remaining volumes in the context of the funding agreement. In the non-K area, turnover (excl. subsidies) achieved 105% of the preceding fiscal year. Total revenues (incl. subsidies) in non-K were 120.6% of the previous year. Overall SCCH achieved 104.7% of the revenues (incl. subsidies) of the previous fiscal year. In fiscal year 2014, 66 projects were conducted, 43 of which were completed within the fiscal year. Of the total, 26% of projects (25% in the previous year), 61% (69% in the previous year) of project hours, and 67% (71% in the previous year) of income were in the COMET K1 area. This indicates that COMET typically Umsatz inkl. Förderung / Income incl. subsidies Anteil Non-K am Umsatz inkl. Förderung / Non-K portion of income incl. subsidies 14 SCCH Magazin 3/2015 Finanzen / Financials 2013 Vorjahr 71%) der Erlöse. 15 SCCH Magazin 3/2015 involves larger projects that barely cover their own costs. The non-K area in fiscal year 2014 contributed 33% of overall income. SCCH’s established competencies were continued in fiscal year 2014. Strategic projects that serve in-house research introduced new technologies and methods, pursued the state of the art, and provided a basis for application-oriented projects. In fiscal year 2014 the strategic projects in COMET and in non-K area comprised a 45% (of project hours, previous year 39%) share. This ensures that SCCH can continue to provide applied research services at the highest level in the coming years. The primary task of SCCH is delivering applied research for Company Partners. This mandates an international transfer of knowledge and technology, publication activities, and participation in international conferences for SCCH. Numerous publications (see p. 26 et seq.), 6 invitations to lectures, 125 invitations as referee for publications, 28 memberships in program committees of international conferences including functioning as session chair and organizer or co-organizer of conferences document that SCCH and its staff enjoy a recognized position in international research. Software Competence Center Hagenberg GmbH is a non-profit, application-oriented research facility owned to equal shares by Upper Austrian Research GmbH, Johannes Kepler University Linz and the Association of Company Partners of Software Competence Center Hagenberg. In addition to a Board of Supervisors, SCCH established a Strategy Board as a primarily scientific advisory body. The Strategy Board includes renowned national and international professors, who discuss in regular meetings research directions and give recommendations. In the frame of the funding programs SCCH is evaluated by international experts every second or third year. These evaluations focus on scientific as well as economic aspects. A research center such as SCCH lives from the knowhow and the engagement of its staff. The number of staff members (employed directly at the Center) in fiscal year 2014 averaged 68 persons (59.1 full-time equivalent) and was higher than in the previous year (62 persons, 53.6 FTE). In addition, staff members of Scientific Partners and Company Partners participated in projects. Thereby additional experts were involved in projects and structures were created to enable optimal technology transfer with the partners. Although the involvement declined somewhat due to the restricted COMET volume and shortages in human resources (9.3 full-time equivalent positions compared to 12.6 in the previous year), strong networking is still reflected. Nonetheless, the 87% share of staff employed directly at SCCH (FTE) ensures a powerful core team for conducting projects. The share of women at SCCH is 23% of staff. “Our longrange goal is to raise the share of women researchers at SCCH. Measures to make positions for women researchers more attractive, that encourage women to apply, and even prompting women in their choice of college major, are all aimed to achieve this goal,” explains Dr. Klaus Pirklbauer. The qualifications and scientific standing of its staff is of particular importance to SCCH. Of SCCH researchers, 47% have a PhD and nearly all others have at least a master. Lively publication activity, good integration in the scientific community, and SCCH’s own PhD support program ensure continuous further development of the Center. Hier bei der Langen Nacht der Forschung./ Active public relations work is important to SCCH, here at the PR event “Long Night of Research”. 25 SCCH Magazin 3/2015 SCCH Software Competence Center Hagenberg Wissenschaftliche Publikationen Scientific Publications DE EN Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten und damit auch Publikationen sind am SCCH von großer Bedeutung.
