Roberto Gaspari, how has the joint venture Minda Silca

make use of. “The strengths of our two operations complement
each other ideally,” observes Fischer.
The production location challenge
Silca DUO is in many respects an ambitious project. And this
extends to the choice of production location. For the first time
ever in Silca’s history, key cutting machines will not be made
at the headquarters in Italy. In order to enable production to
take place in Noida, adjustments had to be made to existing
production methods. The complex mix of components needed
to make the key cutting machines required an improvement
in process setup. Silca equipment also had to be integrated
into the manufacturing process. In order to ensure high Silca

Interview with Patrick Sahli, Business Manager at Westside
leisure and retail center, Berne-Brünnen (Switzerland)
What makes Westside so special for you?
As a leisure and retail center, it is both a modern marketplace
and at the same time a place to relax. Shopping and recreation,
as well as regular events, all take place under the same roof. It
is not the individual parts or the architecture in itself which
make the place exciting. It is the combination, the whole package, which makes the center such a special experience.

Central access

cargo port
Barcelona’s cargo port is strengthening its position as
the gateway to Southern Europe. It is expanding its handling
capacity while improving its logistical efficiency. Iberkaba
has used Kaba exos 9300 to combine access systems from
different suppliers and with differing standards – a major
challenge.

volumes increase, the operations of over 600 different companies with more than 15,000 staff have to be coordinated into
a harmonious whole.
Retaining an oversight
At the beginning of 2008, Iberkaba was faced with the challenge of integrating the access systems across all facilities into
one central management system. No easy task, as the port
houses a huge number of companies, including 118 ship owners
with 450 shipping lines. Among the factors critical to the
project were the significant throughflow of people around the

port facilities, the large number of buildings and tenants
involved, and the existing access and time + attendance systems installed by other suppliers. “The challenge for us was to
integrate this modern-day ‘Babylon’ into a single system,”
is how Iñaki Barettini, Marketing Manager Iberkaba, sums it up.
Francesc Bonada, Manager of Systems and Users Support at
the port of Barcelona, was aware from the outset that achieving the right combination of security and convenience was a
difficult balancing act. Everyone using the port facilities must
be easily and reliably identifiable, whenever necessary, by the
security staff or by police and customs officers.
“We trusted in Kaba’s ability to do full justice to this complex
task,” says Bonada. Kaba alone had the technology and expertise to combine such different solutions into an effective overall system. The reliability and robustness of its products had
already been demonstrated in Barcelona’s World Trade Center,
which has been using a Kaba access system for ten years.

Online solution
For access to areas which require an enhanced
level of security – e.g. at the main entrance or
at doors to elevators and floors – an online system
offers convenience and security at the highest
level (online = wired doors permanently connected
up to the system).
Maintaining a long-term overview
“As well as offering enhanced security and improved data consis
tency, it was also particularly important to us to provide our cus
tomers with optimum support in their processes,” adds Müller.
Thus, if required, the system will produce a printed receipt when
a key is handed out. And an automatic reminder can be issued for

tem creates absolute clarity: it issues reliable notification that
the relevant person must also hand in the keys they have been
issued with. Thus, the security staff have a comprehensive over
view at all times. In addition, a record is kept of all procedures.
“Even going back years, it can be ascertained who paid what
deposit for a key,” continues Product Manager Müller.
Closing every back door
“For some doors, companies will obviously continue to rely on
mechanical solutions,” Müller explains. Mechanical master key
systems remain the most inexpensive way of managing access
rights. “But it is important that access authorization for these
doors, too, is managed as part of one all-encompassing system.
Mechanical solution
Doors with a mechanical lock cylinder remain the
most inexpensive means of arranging access
control.
This means that every last back door is securely closed. It is like
a puzzle: the whole is more than the sum of its parts.”

Unocode 399 EVO
Swift, practically soundless and easy to operate: such are the
most important advantages of Unocode 399 EVO. The latest
electronic key cutting machine from Silca provides optimum
cutting quality for flat cylinder or vehicle keys, single- or doublesided. The machine reads the original key and cuts the copy
simultaneously, reliably and with centesimal precision. The
Unocode 399 EVO is equipped with key clamps with an exclu
sive quick and simple rotating system, as well as with a clamp
locking based on a torque-controlled knob. The accompanying
software offers some very useful functions allowing extremely
flexible management of key data; for instance, personalized
cards can be generated using Code Maker and downloaded
straight to the machine.

CardLink for forklifts
Forklift trucks must only be operated by those with a forklift
license – a security requirement which has been difficult to
enforce in the past, as the ignition keys can be very easily passed
to someone else. Kaba now offers a solution in which the forklift
truck is fitted with a reader unit and included via CardLink
directly in the central access management system. Authoriza
tion to use a forklift is stored on the operator’s badge. This new
solution means that, if there is an accident, it is easy to find out
who was driving which forklift. The Kaba elolegic LA-PC reader
can be fitted to the vehicle quickly and with minimum installa
tion work thanks to a sophisticated click-mounting system.

Kaba elo manager 3.2
In the fall of 2008 an updated version (3.2) of the Kaba elo man
ager software became available. This configuration software for
stand-alone components now also caters for mechanical locking
components: thus, mechatronic and mechanical component
data can be conveniently managed using the same software. In
addition, digital cylinders in the new L-Line product range can
be configured with Kaba elo manager 3.2. In its new form, the
software also provides for customer-specific design of receipts
for issue and return of badges and keys. With the new export
function, locking plans can be swiftly exported to Excel and con
figured individually for printout. Old log or traceback data can
be deleted very easily on their expiry date.

E-Plex 5800
Kaba Ilco E-Plex 5800 series comes as a response to the new
US government credentials standard FIPS 201 for identity
verification in government buildings. The stand-alone elec
tronic locking system is designed to authenticate and grant
physical access using Personal Identity Verification (PIV)
smart cards, which have identification data, a digital signature
certificate and other encrypted data stored on them. Depend
ing on the specific needs of the customer, the E-Plex 5800
series can be configured to operate in three scalable modes,
each one adding progressively more checking of the creden
tial. The locks will record up to 30,000 events and thus provide
comprehensive audit capability in regards to user account
ability. The new product range is rounded off with standalone access controllers (SAC) and management software.

Questor Management Software
An important addition has recently been made to the world of
electronic safe locks: the new AS 274 management software
enables Web-based management of codes for one-time-code
locks in the Questor family. This means that different users can
now process code requests at the same time and from different
locations. Several thousand locks can be managed on a single
system. The AS 274 software is set up as a Web server with SQL
database and can be adjusted in line with differing customer
requirements. At the same time, the system provides as much
security as you could wish for. In combination with an external
interface, the management solution can be integrated very easily
into existing systems.

Gitcon DXT-22 “Post Office”
Access authorization for Gitcon high-security locks can now be
managed from a single location. The line-powered Ethernetenabled DXT-22 “Post Office” is a communication hub that trans
mits the necessary data between the user’s ID badge and the
host Gitcon software. When the user places their access medium
(transponder card) on the DXT-22, it updates the authorization
stored on the card within a few seconds. If the card holder does
not have the required authorization or if the card has expired,
the security administrator is automatically informed by e-mail. If
the server goes down, the hub continues to record and store
audit data. The DXT-22 can be conveniently located within the
building or outside it.

Kaba maTrix
Kaba maTrix is a new locking system for Kaba’s authorized deal
ers. The three-tier system is based on the tried-and-tested Kaba
gemini T product line, and has patent protection until 2021. The
three key types – SmartKey, LongKey and the long-headed key –
can be cut on all the usual mechanical Silca Matrix machines.
Thus, the entry costs for authorized partners are significantly
reduced. Kaba maTrix is ideal for relatively small locking systems
with up to 36 individual locks under one master key. The locking
system can be upgraded to Kaba elolegic at any time.

Energy-saving Sliding
Door
Ensuring good heat insulation, including in the entrance area
to a building, is increasingly important, not least for environ
mental reasons. With its heat-insulating PSW profile system
and accompanying sliding door drive units, Kaba Gilgen offers
a certified overall system for just this purpose. The result: sig
nificantly improved energy use and therefore lower costs and
reduced CO2 emissions. The sensors are integrated into the
profiles of the single-winged or bi-parting door installations.
The doors can also be equipped with a multipoint locking sys
tem for enhanced protection against break-in. Kaba’s auto
matic sliding door with heat-insulated profile system fulfills
the current requirements of the German Energy Saving Regu
lations (EnEV) and accords with German standard DIN 18650
on automatic doors.

Reading up
Good news for anyone who wants to know more about the
subject of security: in the fall of 2008, a book entitled ‘Libro
básico de la seguridad’ was published. Over the space of about
400 pages, a range of solutions for the protection of persons
and property is explained. But this is not a list of products: it is
about the design, planning and organization of security in our
daily lives. Attention is devoted both to providing straightfor
ward advice, such as how to fit security grills properly, and to
describing wide-ranging solutions such as might be required by
a financial services provider with hundreds of branches.
The author of this new security bible is 44-year-old José Miguel
Ángel Olleros, father of two. As Distribution Manager at Iberkaba,
he knows his way about the business. He has worked for the
Kaba Group’s Iberian subsidiary since 1989, and has also been
doing regular teaching for five years on matters of security for

ations is underestimated. In fact, such considerations should, Ángel
José Miguel Ángel spent two years researching and writing his
believes, be part and parcel of our day-to-day lives. Or, as Aristotle
book. One of the reasons why he thought of writing it was what

The key to art
For once, the humble key is cast in a somewhat different light: in
the polychrome pictures and collages of US artist Ned Garnhart,
the key becomes a surprisingly rich source for artistic creation
(http://mysite.verizon.net/nedart/). Ned discovered a fascination
for keys 15 years ago and began collecting them to use in making
a mobile or some other 3-D sculpture. Gradually, his passion
brought him a sizeable horde of keys, mainly Ilco designs. How
ever, the notion of creating paintings with them occurred to him
only recently, when his daughter-in-law, Jill, asked him what he
was ever going to do with all these keys. Garnhart, a retired art
instructor, put on a display of his imaginative works, bearing the
title “All These Keys”, in the summer of 2008 in a solo exhibition
near Pittsburgh. The show was dedicated to Jill.
