It was in the course of this visit that Hovest made him a promise to portray Tibet, and to reveal it to the world as it is today. After taking a year to prepare for this near-impossible journey, Hovest embarked on a breathtaking expedition, travelling through Tibet for a hundred days — on foot, motorbike and by car. Again and again he ventured into areas that are impenetrable to most visitors, either because they are difficult to get to or because access is forbidden. He was only able to succeed in doing so with the active support of the Tibetan people, who showed great faith in him by allowing him to share in their lives. Hovest accompanied them to secret locations, reaching the outer limits of his physical endurance — and that of his camera equipment — at temperatures of minus 30 degrees Celsius, 6000 metres above sea level. His spectacular images capture not only the sublime landscape, but also, through moving portraits of Tibetan nomads and monks, the soul of this mysterious country. The Dalai Lama has his 80th birthday in 2015. Hardcover, 220 Pages, 200 Photos, 27 x 32 cm 15,000 German Words, 90,000 Signs, €45.00 Retail Price 4 York Hovest Born in 1978, York Hovest is a successful international fashion photographer. After meeting the Dalai Lama, Hovest was so inspired by how movingly he spoke about the fate of his country that he promised him that he would capture the sights and sounds of Tibet. York Hovest lives with his family in Munich. 5 NEW TITLE ALASKA ALAS KA Die letzte Wildnis Bernd Römmelt Alaska The last wilderness 'Aleyska', meaning 'great country', was the name given by the Aleut people to their homeland, and it certainly lives up to it in terms of size. It is four times bigger than Germany, yet has only about 700,000 inhabitants. Its natural landscape is as magnificent as it is diverse: polar bears and musk oxen live on the treeless, frozen tundras of the Arctic north; to the south, glaciers crumble majestically into the sea; in the southwest, enormous volcanoes tower up into the sky; and in the milder climates of the southeast the only remaining temperate rainforests on earth still flourish. Bernd Römmelt fell in love with this land of extremes on his first journey to Alaska over twenty years ago, and since then he has returned every year. He has photographed it over the course of more than thirty trips, guiding the reader across all its regions to its most remote corners, revealing it in all its stunning richness and beauty. die leblosen Körper Sie schleifen die des hinauf und fache schroffen Hänge Feuer an. He has made forty trips there over the course of twenty-five years, covering tens of thousands of miles — on foot, by canoe and bike, and in his 1974 Ford Truck Loretta. Here he takes to the road once more, a highway junkie hooked on the roads that snake across the nation's vast expanse and fascinated by the people of small-town America. Saddling up his bike, he travels across the continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific, always on the lookout for unusual encounters. Ranchers, street cowboys, musicians, free spirits, dreamers — for Rohrbach they represent America's heartland. He takes us on a journey through a nation that, though its schizophrenia occasionally exasperates him, always inspires him anew. A deeply personal homage to America and to life on the road, it makes the reader want to pack their bags at once and set off in search of the unknown. Hardcover, 220 Pages, 200 Photos, 23 x 27,5 cm 10,000 German Words, 70,000 Signs, €29.99 Retail Price 10 Dirk Rohrbach Born in Hanau in 1968, Dirk Rohrbach is a traveller, photographer, journalist and doctor. Thanks to his award-winning live reporting, he is one of the most sought-after speakers in the German-speaking world. He travels between America and Europe, without permanent residence. 11 A Dream of Sailing A free life The play of the wind, streaming sails and lapping waves — for many only a dream. Heike Dorsch and her boyfriend Stefan Ramin took the chance to break away. In spring 2008 they bought the Catamaran “Baju” and started their world sailing tour. All along the route of the Mediterranean, the Cape Verde Islands, the Atlantic crossing, the Caribbean, Guatemala, Belize, the Panama Canal, the Galapagos Islands, the Pacific crossing to Vanuatu in the South Sea, the couple enjoyed their freedom for 3 ½ years — until it found a terrifying end with Stefan’s murder. In contrast to her first book, “ Blauwasserleben”, in which Heike Dorsch describes the tragedy of Stefan’s death, “The Dream of Sailing” shows the other side of their tour. With beautiful photos revealing the colorful, diverse life, Heike Dorsch guides the reader through her great adventure, the beauty and the feeling of letting her dream come true — even in the face of the greatest tragedy of her life. A television film and documentary are going to be filmed in 2014. Shades of blue: All pages of the book are designed in different blue tones, reflecting the beautiful colours of the sea in a very special way. Hardcover, 224 Pages, 225 Photos, 22,8 × 27,6 cm, 11,500 German Words, 80,000 Signs, €29.99 Retail Price 12 Heike Dorsch Heike Dorsch worked as a product manager for international companies. In 2004 she quit, moved with her boyfriend Stefan Ramin to Asia and taught yoga. In 2008 her biggest dream came true: a world sailing tour. Her first best seller "Blauwasserleben" describes the tragic end to this fantastic journey. 13 NEW TITLE Abenteuer Dolomiten Vom Gardasee zur Marmolata Adventure in the Dolomites From Gardasee to Marmolata As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Dolomites are both a popular holiday destination and one of Europe's last remaining areas of wilderness. Ulla Lohmann and Sebastian Hofmann set out to discover the Dolomites off the beaten track — on mountain bikes, on foot and by climbing. From spending cold nights in a bivouac to crossing mountain glaciers or clambering across precipices using old, rusty pitons, no challenge was too great. Their journey took them 200 kilometres, from Lake Garda to Marmolada, the tallest mountain in the Dolomites. They traversed the mountains in four stages and in all seasons, inspired not only by the magnificent panoramic views and rugged mountain peaks, but also by the smaller miracles of nature beneath their feet — for every hundred metre increase in elevation, whether they were travelling over grassland, forest, rock or snow, they took a closer look at a square metre of terrain, discovering the beauty of the landscape in detail. Hardcover, 220 Pages, 180 Photos, 25 x 30 cm 10,000 German Words, 70,000 Signs, €39.99 Retail Price 14 Ulla Lohmann & Sebastian Hofmann Lohmann / Hofmann Ulla Lohmann, born in 1977, works as a photographer and documentary filmmaker for, among others, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, GEO, the BBC and The New York Times. Lohmann and Hofmann live together in the foothills of the Alps. 15 Rainforests Life in the Jungle For over 25 years photographer Dieter Schonlau and his wife Sandra Hanke have traveled the globe photographing the treasures of the largest rainforest regions on Earth. Whether orangutans, rushing waterfalls spilling over boulders, or tiny frogs hidden beneath leaves, the images captured reflect their passion for jungles and a lifetime dedicated to nature photography and conservation. NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC GERMANY now presents their previously unpublished work in a large-format photography book divided into 6 chapters: Surinam, Borneo, Sumatra, Malaysia, Bolivia, and Guatemala. The stunning images are accompanied by personal text, which describes the flora and fauna of the rainforests as well as the lessons learned from encounters with local people. Each chapter contains a map of the region and pages pulled from original journals. The book concludes with a "Making-Of" feature, highlighting the challenges and excitement of living in the jungle. D WORL RD AWA S S E PR R WINNE Hardcover, 224 Pages, 180 Photos, 6 Maps, 24.5 × 29.3 cm, 20,000 German Words, 133,000 Signs, €39.95 Retail Price Wild Waters of Europe Volcanoes Rushing streams, deep lakes, and open seas — water is life. It is a source of food, a place for recreation, a means of transportation, and a habitat for richly diverse flora and fauna. Now NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC GERMANY, in partnership with Wild Wonders of Europe, dives into the watery realms of the European continent to create a visual celebration of water in the form of a large-format photography book. 200 extraordinary images — taken under and above water, from land and from the air — reveal a portrait of the pristine coasts, lakes, rivers, and oceans of Europe and the amazing animal species that inhabit them. Pulled from the work of 69 nature photographers showcasing the natural heritage of 48 European countries, this third book project from Wild Wonders reveals Europe's aquatic world as most will never see it: wild and bursting with life. In addition to the remarkable images, thoughtprovoking text addresses the global importance of this ecosystem, the challenges facing it, and possible solutions and actions that are needed. Throughout his career, World Press Award winner Carsten Peter has focused on the extremes in nature — whether tornadoes, caves or deserts. And he is certainly one of the best volcano photographers in the world. Over the past 20 years, Carsten has gone on assignment for NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE, to capture active volcanoes around the world: from Kamchatka to Indonesia, from Antarctica to Tanzania. This large format coffee-table book is stunningly diverse. He was as close as humanly possible when Mount Etna erupted in 2001, throwing rocks as big as cars 800 meters up into the air. He slept in a tent in the Nyiragongo Caldera in Congo for several days, and he climbed 450 meters down into the dangerous volcano on the South Sea island Vanuatu. He takes us on 14 fascinating expeditions and tells stories that combine thrilling adventures with the latest scientific discoveries. The book has a large map showing the tectonic plates, small maps of each volcano, a glossary and a list of the most famous outbreaks. Since then the country and its people are his central subject. Johaentges has published more than 30 coffee table books and great stories in famous German Magazines like „Stern“ and „Geo“. Author of most of his books is his wife Jackie Blackwood. Snowy mountain peaks, miles of sandy coastline, active volcanoes, plunging ords, thick rainforests, geothermal pools, deep cave systems, rivers, lakes, waterfalls — there is no other country on Earth that contains such diverse and contrasting natural features in such close proximity. In addition to breathtaking scenery, New Zealand is also home to a fascinating blend of cultures including the indigenous Maori tribe, as well as colorful characters such as professional sheep herders, ecclectic artists, and passionate ecologists. Flightless birds and other unique animals and plants round out the amazing biodiversity that results from the extreme isolation of this small chain of islands. Ritschel travelled to all six countries that make up these mountains and was rewarded with a breathtaking experience of the alps. Now he shares it with the world. Based on cultural traditions dating back hundreds of years, the Demons of the Alps evoke legendary figures and primitive rituals. Carsten Peter reveals these surprising practices as a bewildering and unfamiliar piece of the German culture. You don't have to go to Africa to discover exotic traditions — they are alive in the middle of Europe, too. Photographer Florian Wagner and NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC author Johan Dehoust take a special adventure trip through Germany. In two months, they take in all 1500 kilometers from the Zugspitze in the Alps to the famous island Sylt in the North Sea — on a trek with seven guys and fi ve horses. Travelling on horseback, they reveal an intense view of the beauty and diversity of Germany’s landscapes. They meet artists and biologists, fishers and a princess. They ride through the classic city of Weimar and the Wagner-Hotspot Bayreuth. And in the evening it is a little bit like in the Wild West: They put up their tent and light a campfire. An adventurous journey, an unusual trip and a very special and close-up view of a country. His book Ein deutscher Wandersommer (A German Summer of Wandering) was top of the German bestseller list for eight straight months. The German public was fascinated by Andreas’ journey walking along the former East-West border of Germany while interacting with the wildlife and people he met along the way. His other pursuits all revolve around wildlife, adventure, and nature. Fans love reading about Andreas’ adventures, but this is the first time that a coffee-table book with a focus on his photographs has been published. Building on his success as an authority on wildlife and nature in Germany, this book will trace a similar geographical path as described in Ein deutscher Wandersommer, but adds amazing visuals to enrich the story.
