O videomaker e fotógrafo usou a praia de Ipanema como cenário para o clique
vencedor desta edição. “Aqui é a terra do verão. O sol reina dezembro, janeiro
e fevereiro. E julho, agosto e por aí vai. Nenhum mês consegue escapar da
exuberância do astro, que por aqui, faz questão de mostrar que é rei mesmo. As
imagens são isso, pedaços enquadrados dos verões de todos os meses”.
The videomaker and photographer used Ipanema beach as the setting for the snap.
We freaked out when we received this incredible image and it was inevitable that
it was chosen in 1st place in the competition, even more so given this football-mad
moment that we’re going through right now. “Here is the land of summer. The sun
reigns from December to December. There’s not one month that manages to escape
from the exuberance of the sun, which around here makes sure it demonstrates that
it really is king. The images are this, captured pieces of summer from every month.

“Meu sogro é surfista e estava fazendo umas fotos dele.
Daí esse cara estava mandando altas manobras e comecei
a clicá-lo também. Uma dica da cidade... Gosto muito do
Jobi para um bate papo informal com amigos”.
“My father-in-law is a surfer and I was taking some photos of
him. There was this guy there pulling off some big moves and
I started to photograph him as well. A tip for the city… I love
Jobi for a casual chat with friends .”

Anna Fischer é de São Paulo mas mora no Rio há 20 anos.
Caminhando pela praia, viu dois moleques jogando bola e se
encantou. “Fiquei observando a felicidade deles com aquela
bola, foi muito especial”. Anna adora o Arpoador, onde ela vai
para “pensar na vida, fotografar, no inverno, no verão, sozinha,
com a família, com amigos. Não me canso nunca!”.
Anna Fischer is from Sao Paulo but has lived in Rio for 20
years. Walking along the beach she saw two kids playing
football and was enchanted. “I was looking at how happy
they were with that ball, it was really special”. Anna loves
Arpoador, where she goes to “think about life, take photos, in
winter, in summer, alone, with family, with friends. I never get
tired of it!”
“O Rio de Janeiro que eu amo foi esse que eu enquadrei,
e não esse que a gente vive (violência, caos no trânsito,
hipocrisia social...). Gosto do que está dentro, o que está
fora eu dispenso! Meu lugar preferido no Rio é a Pedra da
Gávea”.
“The Rio de Janeiro that I love is what I captured in the photo,
and not what we’re experiencing at the moment (violence,
traffic chaos, social hypocrisy…). I like what’s on the inside,
what’s on the outside I get rid of! My favourite place in Rio is

PRAÇA SÃO SALVADOR
Localizada no bairro das Laranjeiras, a São
Salvador é uma das pracinhas mais animadas
da cidade. Foi lá que surgiu o “isoporzinho”
criado por um grupo, que indignado com os
altos preços dos bares da cidade, passou a levar
isopores com bebidas para socializar na praça,
transformando a ‘São Salva’ numa espécie de
Baixo Gávea de Laranjeiras. É só passar por
lá que você vai ver a moçada na mureta, não
importa o dia. Aos sábados, a partir das 16h, o
Batuque no Coreto faz uma roda de samba no
melhor estilo “entre amigos” e aos domingos,
a feirinha de artesanato é embalada ao som do
chorinho. Para completar, vale passar na barraca
de CDs e caipirinhas do Luizinho – sucesso do
bairro!
Located in the neighbourhood of Laranjeiras,
São Salvador is one of the liveliest little squares in
the city. It was here that the “isoporzinho” arose,
which was created by a group outraged about the
high prices in the city’s bars and who ended up
taking cool-boxes filled with drinks to hang out
in the square. Thereby transforming ‘São Santa’
into a kind of Laranjeiras Baixo Gávea. Just
passing by you’ll see the young folk sitting on the
wall, regardless of what day it is. On Saturdays,
starting from 4pm, Batuque no Coreto play a
samba roda in classic “amongst friends” style
and on Sundays the little market of handcrafts
is filled to the sound of chorinho music. To round
things off, it’s worth passing Luizinho’s cd and
caipirinha stall – a neighbourhood hit.

RIO STREET ART TOUR
Que tal um tour artsy pelo Rio? É essa a ideia da
cineasta Júlia Murad e da designer Nina Gani,
à frente do Rio Street Art Tour. O esquema é o
seguinte: com duração de 4 horas, o tour passa
pelos principais pontos e paredões da arte de rua
carioca e ainda por uma favela em Santa Teresa,
pelo Jardim Botânico e termina ao pôr-do-sol
na Praia de Ipanema. Tudo, no maior conforto,
dentro de uma van com ar condicionado, cerveja,
água e biscoito Globo. As meninas falam espanhol e inglês e o tour custa U$40. Mais info aqui:

How about an artsy tour around Rio? This is
the idea of the film-maker Julia Murad and designer Nina Gani, the figureheads of Rio Street
Art Tour. It goes like this: lasting 4 hours, the tour
passes the main points and locations of carioca
street art, through a favela in Santa Teresa, to
Jardim Botanico and finishing with the sunset
on Ipanema beach. All in top comfort, including

o Jojô Café e Bistrô é o melhor lugar para late
lunches e drinques noite a dentro. Da cozinha
da chef Joana Carvalho saem delícias como

IED – Istituto
Europeo di Design
Recém-chegado por terras cariocas, o Instituto
se instalou no antigo prédio do Cassino da Urca,
construído em 1922. O IED vai oferecer cursos,
workshop e vivências em áreas como moda,
design e comunicação visual, com objetivo de
ser uma instituição internacional de educação
aliada à pesquisa. Depois de um impasse com
os moradores da tranquila Urca, o Instituto vai
apoiar iniciativas de transporte alternativos, como
a bicicleta. A ver. Recently arrived on carioca
shores, the institute has set up home in the
old Urca Casino building, constructed in 1922.
IED offers courses, workshops and experience
in areas such as fashion, design and visual
communication, with the objective of being
an international institution of education
alongside research. After an impasse with
the residents of sleepy Urca, the Institute will
support initiatives of alternative transport

objetos vintage, a linha de acessórios masculinos e

altura o grão já foi moído, pesado e devidamente
passado manualmente pelo filtro de porcelana, e

AUDIO REBEL
Um dos palcos da música independente na cidade,
o Estúdio Audio Rebel, costuma reunir uma turma
pra lá de original que fomenta a cena experimental
carioca. Além de alugar o espaço para toda sorte de
serviços de áudio (ensaios, produções, gravações
etc) o local abre às portas, vez ou outra, para shows
– basta conferir a programação no site para ficar
por dentro das apresentações. E mais: o lugar conta
com uma loja e oficina de instrumentos musicais
que vende e conserta itens novos e usados como
guitarras, baixo, bateria, pedais e amplificadores.
One of the stages of independent music in the city,
the Audio Rebel Studio which brings together a
crowd of originals who brought about the carioca
experimental scene. As well as renting out the
space for all kinds of audio services (rehearsals,
producing, recording etc), from time to time the
place opens its doors for gigs – just check their
website to keep up to date with performances. And
what’s more: the venue has a shop and workshop
for musical instruments, which sells and repairs
new and used items such as guitars, bass, drum
kits, pedals and amps.

of the Bentas. Since its launch, the brands work
hasn’t stopped popping up in editorials. The prints,

Fabiano Vekic . De Porto Alegre, veio pro Rio querendo ser
piloto agrícola e acabou montando uma horta orgânica em
Vargem Grande. “Tomate, abóbora, aipim, milho, pimentão,
cebola. A horta requer cuidado diário.” From Porto Alegre,
he came to Rio wanting to become an agricultural pilot and
ended up starting an organic plantation in Vargem Grande.

Carioca da Vila da Penha que desde 1998, faz das ruas e do
cotidiano o suporte para sua arte. Parte da vanguarda do
grafitti no Rio, já ganhou prêmios, participou de exposições
e teve seu trabalho publicado mundo afora, mas segundo ele,
seu lugar é nos muros, de onde não pretende sair tão cedo.
A gente agradece. A carioca from Vila da Penha and since
1998 has got what he needs to make his art from the streets
and day-to-day life. Part of Rio’s vanguard graffiti scene, he’s
already won awards, participated in exhibitions and had his
work published all over the world. But according to him, his
place is on the walls, from where he doesn’t intend to leave
any time soon. For this we thank him.

alguns picos ao redor do Estádio Jornalista Mário
Filho, também conhecido como Maracanã. A região
faz parte da Grande Tijuca, englobando partes de
bairros como Tijuca, Praça da Bandeira e Vila Isabel
por exemplo. Uma volta pelas redondezas, que
ganhou nome de pássaro em tupi-guarani graças ao
rio Maracanã, prova que além de futebol, o epicentro
futebolístico carioca esconde outras pérolas.

In this edition The Beach will introduce you to some
spots around the Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho,
also known as the Maracana. The region is part of
Grande Tijuca, comprising parts of neighbourhoods
such as Tijuca, Praça da Bandeira and Vila Isabel. A
trip around the area, which thanks to the Maracanã
river gained the name ‘parrot’ in the indigenous
tupi-guarani language, proves that as well as
the sport itself, the epicentre of carioca football
also hides other gems. As the famous chant goes:

17th of June Carnaval de Orquestra

Ludwig, sediada no Museu Estatal Russo de São
Petersburgo. A exposição conta com obras-primas
da arte pop, do neoexpressionismo alemão, do
fotorrealismo e de outros movimentos internacionais
de arte. Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Robert
Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Jeff Koons, JeanMichel Basquiat, Joseph Beuys, Gerhardt Richter,

from the Ludwig Collection which is based at
the Russian State Museum in St Petersburg. The

star of world dance who set new standards by using
the naked body with anarchic choreography, and the

O espetáculo narra a trajetória de uma das mais
talentosas cantoras brasileiras, desde o início de
sua carreira em Brasília, nos anos 1980, até a
consagração nacional alguns anos mais tarde. Cássia
Eller morreu no auge, em 2001, antes de completar
40 anos. O musical canta as histórias de uma artista
que permanece viva na memória do público com uma
obra atual. Show detailing the trajectory of one of the
most talented Brazilian singers, from the beginning
of her career in Brasilia in the 1980s, to national
acclaim several years later. Cassia Eller died at her
peak in 2001, before her fortieth birthday, and this
musical sings the story of an artist who remains in the
public’s memory with this current work.

Arabic drama Wajdi Mouawad returns to carioca
stages after touring other cities. The play, the script
