A. GENERAL INFORMATION
1. Students must take the exam only during the regularly scheduled time. Refer to your syllabus for
the specific date and time of the exam.
2. This exam will include the following components: (1) Speaking, (2) Listening Comprehension,
(3) Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary, (4) Cultural Information, and (5) Writing. Each of
these components is worth 20%.
3. For Exam 1, students are to review Capítulos 8-10 in the textbook, Dos mundos (7th edition), and
the on-line workbook, Actividades auditivas.
B. GENERAL FORMAT OF EXAM 1
1. SPEAKING (20%)
Criteria of evaluation. This part of the exam typically consists of a series of questions, asked in a
conversational manner, representative of the material covered in capítulos 8-10. In the actual test,
your instructor will choose questions from the 10 thematic questions listed in section C. You are
to answer each one of them in a conversational manner using a complete sentence that is
grammatically correct and comprehensible. This part will be evaluated based on
comprehensibility, content, fluency, grammatical use, and pronunciation accuracy.
2. LISTENING COMPREHENSION (20%)
To prepare for this part of the exam, take advantage of all activities found in the Dos mundos
program (textbook and the on-line Cuaderno de actividades). In particular, review the sections
called Actividades auditivas (Listening Comprehension Activities) in Capítulos 8-10. In this
section of the exam, your instructor will include 2-3 listening passages from the on-line cuaderno
(Caps. 8-10) and/or from other sources. Although some of the listening passages may be the
same as those found in the cuaderno, the questions may be modified. The format will include true
or false (and correction of the false statements), fill-in-the-blank, short answer, multiple choice or
one of the other formats found in the Actividades auditivas.
3. READING COMPREHENSION AND VOCABULARY (20%)
To prepare for the reading comprehension section of the exam, read and understand all of the
passages in the textbook and the on-line workbook (Caps. 8-10). To prepare for the vocabulary
section, also review the vocabulary used in the Actividades de comunicación and at the end of
each chapter. Formats to be used in testing reading comprehension skills will include true or
false (and correction of the false statements), fill-in-the-blank, short answer, and/or multiple
choice in Spanish. To test the vocabulary, multiple choice will be used.
4. CULTURAL INFORMATION (20%)
The textbook Dos mundos offers a wide variety of readings and cultural materials in every
chapter. The cultural information appears particularly in the sections Ventanas culturales,
Ventanas al pasado, Enlace a la literatura / a la música / al cine, Lecturas, Vida y cultura, and
the section “¡Conozca...!”. In the Resumen cultural section in the workbook, as well as in
supplementary exercises in the textbook and workbook, students will find written exercises to
verify their knowledge and understanding of Hispanic cultures. The formats used for testing this
part include true or false (and correction of the false statements), fill-in-the-blank, short answer,
and/or multiple choice. This section of the exam will be based on the cultural worksheet found
on this study guide. The questions on the cultural worksheet will be similar to the ones on the
exam, but not necessarily exactly the same as those that appear on the exam.
5. WRITING (20%)
In this section of the exam, students will write one short composition of a minimum of ten
sentences based on a given topic. The composition will be evaluated for its grammar,
vocabulary, content (for full credit, all of the questions and ideas in the writing prompt must be
addressed), length, and organization. To prepare for writing the composition, take advantage of
all the Actividades escritas (written activities found in the on-line cuaderno), other writing
exercises (Tareas), and the four composition topics below. The day of the exam, students will be
given two of the four topics listed below, and they will write a composition of at least 10
sentences about one of them. For many of these writing prompts, you can find models in the
textbook and workbook.
Some topics for practices:
1. Un día típico en la escuela primaria. Describa un día típico en su escuela primaria. Incluya:
la hora de llegada, las clases, lo que comía para el almuerzo, y como se divertía los fines de
semana, después de clases, y/o durante las vacaciones. ¿Qué es lo que más le gustaba de su
escuela? ¿Qué es lo que menos le gustaba?
2. Las comidas. ¿Qué comidas le encantan? ¿Hay platos de países hispanos que le gustan?
¿Hay algunas comidas que no le gustan pero que come porque son saludables? ¿Cuáles casi
nunca come? Mencione platos, legumbres, frutas, postres y/o bebidas que le gustan o que no
le gustan. ¿Por qué (no) le gustan estas comidas?
3. En un restaurante. Describa una cita en un restaurante. Describa la conversación entre
usted, su amigo/a y un mesero / una mesera en un restaurante. Debe utilizar por lo menos (at
least) 5 de las siguientes palabras o expresiones útiles: desear, pedir, querer, recomendar,
tráigame (tráiganos), la cuenta, la especialidad, la propina, en seguida, para beber, y para
empezar.
4. Una vacación ideal. Describa una vacación a un lugar ideal. Descríbala en detalle, usando
estas preguntas como guía: ¿Cómo se llama este lugar? ¿Cómo es? Diga si tiene playas,
lagos, montañas, valles, selvas y/o desiertos. ¿Cómo es el clima? ¿Cómo son las casas?
¿Qué medios de transporte hay? ¿Qué le gusta hacer allí?
