These claims are rooted in the truth, but only partly. God has planted a yearning for him in the human heart, and God’s might and power are evident in the magnificence of creation. However, there is a higher order of revelation we must not ignore. This is God’s revelation of himself that comes to us through the words of the prophets, and then, most fully, through his Son, Jesus. Why should anyone be content with just a whisper from God within oneself, or a shadow of God in nature? Jesus was real, he walked among the people. He extended his hand in healing time and time again, ate with his friends and sometimes with his enemies, and welcomed sinners and strangers into his company. Jesus brought hope to those who were living in sin and relief to those suffering dreadful afflictions. Simple words from Jesus bring about powerful results, such as those we heard today, Quiet! Come out of him! The words of Jesus brought healing and forgiveness, and they also brought comfort and direction in times of uncertainty. He said, Follow me, I will make you fishers of men; Be not afraid; I will be with you always; Today you will be with me in paradise. Contact the Parish office to arrange for baptismal preparation. Baptisms are celebrated monthly except during Lent. Spanish Prep Class: 1st Mon at 7 pm; Baptism: 3rd Sat at 10 am English Prep Class: 2nd Mon at 7 pm; Baptism: 4th Sat at 10 am Weddings Arrangements need to be made at least six months in advance. Call the Parish office. Rosary The Rosary is recited daily after the 8 am Mass and before the 5:30 pm Mass on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Hispanic Community has a Rosary Hour every Monday at 6 pm in the Rectory Chapel. The words of Peter from Saint John’s Gospel express it well: “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life”. We are to listen, believe and live accordingly. This is our task, and the Spirit of God alive in us will help us accomplish it. Wishing you a good weekend I encourage you to reflect and maybe discuss that thought with your family members or even friends. Fr. Tad Such powerful words – no one had ever spoken in this manner before. The absolute authority with which Jesus spoke moved many people to follow him and listen closely to his teachings. To listen closely to the teachings of Jesus is every Catholic’s responsibility today. It is easy to hear the Scriptures proclaimed each time we attend Mass, but it can be more difficult to listen with a receptive ear and a willing heart, and harder, still, to put those lessons into practice. Stewardship is a Way of Life: Ministry Fair coming February 7-8 “Once one chooses to become a disciple of Jesus Christ, stewardship is not an option.” ~Bishop John McRaith One of the most fundamental Stewardship vehicles within a church setting is Liturgical Ministries. How awesome to be able to participate in God’s work! Yet that is what we are called to do in the liturgical setting. Think about the Mass, our most visible act of public worship at the “table of the Lord,” and see if any of these ministries speak to you: Sacristan—sets up the table and prepares the “dishes” for the banquet. Greeter—invites and welcomes others to the “table.” Lector—gives us food for thought by proclaiming (not reading) the Word of God. Eucharistic Minister—distributes the Body and Blood of Christ, the food of life. Monday 8:00 am Maria Mancebo+, Souls in Purgatory+ Usher—manages the collection, the seating, emergencies. Tuesday 5:30 pm Maria B. Guerra (B), Souls in Purgatory+ Altar server—assists the priest at the “table.” Wednesday 8:00 am Joaquim Mancebo+, Souls in Purgatory+ Crab Feed—February 21 Enjoy “all you can eat” crab, salad, pasta and table wine between 5:30 and 9:30 pm. Bar service will be available. Thursday 5:30 pm Bill Nichols+, Souls in Purgatory Friday 8:00 am Joaquim Mancebo+, Souls in Purgatory Tickets are $50/person and the number is limited. Su n d ay Ch ild r en ’s P r o gr a m s Now that we are back from our Christmas Break and we have our children and parents in the parking lot walking to class each week, please be aware of your driving and your parking habits. We want to be sure to keep our families safe from injury when they come to class. Thank you for being aware that our program is in session!! Frequently Asked Questions – First Reconciliation When is First Reconciliation? The First Reconciliation Service will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2015, 10am, Upper Church. Where do we meet and at what time? You will need to be in the Church vestibule 15 minutes prior to starting time in order to allow sufficient time to check in and be seated. How long does the service last? The First Penance Service typically lasts approximately 2 hours. The time commitment depends on how many students are receiving and how many priests are available. We will answer more questions next week. God bless you. Girl Scouts Cookie Sale The St Clare School kindergarten Daisy Girl Scouts will be hosting a Cookie sale on Sunday, February 8th following the 9:00am Mass. Proceeds from the sale will help support the girls' goal of donating Easter baskets for the St. Vincent de Paul Society to distribute to less fortunate children within our community. If you would rather not take home cookies, please consider purchasing a box to be sent to our American Forces serving abroad. Girl Scout cookies are such a welcomed "taste of home" for the soldiers. Art News Our students are very creative! We have explored many great artistic styles this year. Before Christmas break, students learned about portraits created in a realistic style. Students learned the proper way to draw eyes, noses, mouths, hair and ears. Also, students practiced drawing the proper proportions of the human face. With this background knowledge in realistic portraits, we have now moved onto abstract portraits. Most recently, we discussed the art of Picasso and other abstract artists. Along with Picasso’s cubist style, we studied a range of abstract styles. I am looking forward to the second half of the year where we will be starting our sculpture unit. Oil clay, wire and mixed media will be our primary focus for this unit. Ky Hulton, Art Teacher First Trimester Middle School Honor Roll Congratulations to our top scholars! Scripture Readings for THIS Sunday First Reading: Deuteronomy 18:15-20 Psalm: 95 Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:32-35 Gospel Reading: Mark 1:21-28 According to Moses, the people decided they didn’t want to hear God’s voice directly any more. It was much too frightening. Why couldn’t God send human teachers, prophets, instead? God agreed, but with a warning. The people had better listen to those teachers, because they spoke in God’s name. That arrangement, though, had its own problems, for them and for us. How do I know this teacher is truly from God? And if the teacher is from God, are all parts of the teaching meant for me? We have the Church and scripture to help us with those questions, but still there are always a few loose ends. That is the powerful significance of the sentence in today’s Gospel: “The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.” The people knew that this Jesus was authentic– truly a teacher sent by God. They knew it by hearing him. Copyright © J.S. Paluch Co. Readings for the Week Beyond the Parish Catholic Professionals Breakfast Meeting Thursday, February 12 7:00 am Mass (Fr. No importa si quemamos aceite, cera o electricidad. Lo que importa es velar en oración. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Llamado Anual Diocesano Ya inició la campaña del Llamado Anual Diocesano con el lema “Llamados a Hacer el Trabajo de Dios, Juntos en Cristo”.
