Nosso monitoramento permanente de trabalhos científicos publicados em revistas indexadas, permitiu a identificação e seleção de artigos da: Revista Ceres, Ciência Rural, Revista de Economia e Sociologia Rural, Acta Scientiarum Animal Sciences, Journal of Animal Science, Small Ruminant Research, World´s Poultry Science Journal, Brazilian Journal of Science and Technology, Animal, Applied Animal Behaviour Science, Livestock Science, Meat Science e International Journal of Agricultural and Soil Science. It was a descriptive and quantitative research using three business segments. The research involved thirty farmers, two producers associations and two milk processing industries, totaling 34 interviews. The results showed that, in the investigated period, the sector suffered significant structural changes regarding technological diffusion, innovation and logistics, resulting in, among others, a decrease in the number of rural enterprises, improving infrastructure and increasing environmental certifications. Therefore, it can be seen that the environment has changed and that the incorporation of technological innovations by the surveyed sectors, as well as upgrading of the infrastructure have focused on improving the production and processing of milk. Research, however, shows that omission of the dry period avoids the negative energy balance after Universidade de São Paulo Prefeitura do Campus de Pirassununga Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia - Departamento de Nutrição e Produção Animal Programa de Pós-Graduação em Nutrição e Produção Animal - Laboratório de Análises Socioeconômicas e Ciência Animal 6 calving with its potential negative effects on metabolic disorders, infectious diseases, and fertility. On the downside, no dry period (NDP) causes a loss of milk production per cow compared with a conventional dry period (CDP). The objective of this research was to make an economic comparison between CDP with a sixty day dry period and NDP. Data on milk production per cow and on replacement rate, being the possible result of improved health, were taken from five farms involved in a research project on the effects of NDP, both from the year before and the year after switching from CDP to NDP. These data show that the replacement rate was on average 37% in the CDP situation while it was 24% in the NDP situation. Milk production was on average 13% lower in the NDP situation while fat and protein content of the milk were 0.21% and 0.42% points higher. A whole farm dairy linear programming model maximizing labor income (returns to family labor and management) was used to determine the technical and economic results for the situation with CDP and NDP. Results were calculated for three scenarios (one with milk quota and two without milk quota), representing differences in possibilities for increasing the farm size. Results show that under each scenario NDP is more profitable than CDP. The increase in labor income varies from 20% to 42%. This means that the negative effect of a lower milk production per cow is outweighed by the positive effect of a lower replacement rate and higher milk components. Sensitivity analysis shows that under a milk quota scenario NDP always results in a higher labor income than CDP irrespective of the change in replacement rate and milk production loss. Under the scenarios without milk quota a replacement rate of 34–35% or a milk production loss of 19–21% with NDP would result in a comparable labor income. The conclusion of this research is that NDP gives better economic results than CDP in a dairy quota situation for a broad range of replacement rate reduction and milk production reduction. In a situation without dairy quota, the replacement rate should be at least 3% points lower and milk production should be not more than 19% lower in the NDP situation to end up with better economic results. We used 12 crossbred Holstein x Zebu cows assigned to three 4 x 4 Latin squares. The four treatments consisted of different levels of oregano: oregano free-control diet (0%) and diets added with 0.8, 1.6, and 2.4% oregano. Diets were formulated to meet the requirements for maintenance and milk production of 15 kg day-1. For economic analysis, we employed two economic indicators, net present value and internal rate of return. The total cost per animal and per liter of milk produced has increased with the inclusion of oregano. The inclusion of oregano was not effective for both productivity and profitability, with prices equal to R$ 0.87, 0.97, 1.09, 1.22, and R$ 0.78, 1.03, 1.28, and 1.52 of milk and concentrate, respectively for each level of inclusion. The internal rate of return was more advantageous when not adding oregano in the diet, indicating the viability of using oregano up to 0.8% inclusion to the diet of dairy cows under the conditions of this experiment. The net present value demonstrated that this investment is interesting for all discount rates used in the diet without the addition of oregano, pointing out that, in this treatment, the activity was feasible for any opportunity cost. The MI account for heifer age, birth BW, pre-breeding BW, nutrition level, and dam size and age, and is found to be inversely related to dystocia occurrence. On average there is a 2.2% increase in the probability of dystocia with every 1 point drop in the MI, between the MI scores of 50 and 70. Statistically, MI does not directly alter second pregnancy rate, however dystocia does. The presence of dystocia reduced second pregnancy rates by 10.67%. Using the probability of dystocia predicted from the MI’s in the sample, it is found that on average, every 1 point increase in MI added 0.62% to the probability of the occurrence of second pregnancy, over the range represented by the data. Relationships among MI, dystocia and second pregnancy are nonlinear and exhibit diminishing marginal effects. These relationships indicate optimal production and profitability occur at varying maturities which are altered by animal type, economic environment, production system, and management regime. With these captured relationships any single group of heifers may be ranked by profitability given their physical characteristics, and the applicable production, management and economic conditions. Conducting this study required the construction of a theoretical model that was capable of supporting the specification of the adjusted econometric model using vector autoregression with identification by the Bernanke process. The findings show that the main determinant of beef cattle growth and Brazilian beef exports is increased animal stock. Furthermore, productivity has a positive, albeit more modest, effect on beef production and exports. The results show that the increase of the number of cattle reduces costs to the farmer and retail beef prices. Growth, once, the solution to create more wealth, more jobs, more prosperity and happiness appears not to be anymore an efficient paradigm to solve these problems. The objective of this introductive presentation is to show at what extent goats could be a part of the solution to face them, keep people in rural areas, improve food security and eradicate poverty. To achieve such ambitious objectives, more innovation and technology will be required. But innovation will not be based on the old top– down model. Innovation in goat farming has to be based on partnership and co development with all the actors and trans disciplinary approaches have to be enhanced. Dubeuf, J.P. More and more projects are submitted for donors who have still few references and data to evaluate if these proposals could be successful or not. A study has been initiated to scale up successful practices. It has been based on Knowledge Harvesting and comparative analysis of several projects around the world. Discussions and focus groups were organized as parts of a seminar during the 11th Universidade de São Paulo Prefeitura do Campus de Pirassununga Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia - Departamento de Nutrição e Produção Animal Programa de Pós-Graduação em Nutrição e Produção Animal - Laboratório de Análises Socioeconômicas e Ciência Animal 8 International Conference on Goats. The general characteristics of goat activities and for each commodity and key success factors have been identified and described. Proposals were elaborated and debated to go forward and propose operational tools to support project donors and designers. A project and investment typology will be built and a goat value chain tool kit will be developed during a write shop. The discussions have enhanced the importance of a cost-benefits analysis and planning return on investments within the project. Scavenging chicken production is a profitable enterprise that contributes to poverty reduction especially among the resource challenged rural communities in most parts of the developing world. It is particularly suitable to smallholder farmers and landless peasants due to low capital investment, high cost efficiency, flexible production systems and low production risks. It has also a symbolic significance within the context of socio-cultural as well as religious functions and economically empowers the rural youth and women. Chicken meat and eggs provide a readily available, high-quality source of proteins, vitamins and micronutrients which are particularly essential for children, pregnant women and nursing mothers. Moreover, meat and egg from scavenging chicken present one of the most environmentally efficient animal protein production systems. The major challenges of the scavenging chicken production in Africa include high chicken mortality due to predation and regular outbreaks of diseases notably Newcastle disease; imbalanced nutrition due to poor quality and quantity of feed materials; lack of organised marketing system and low performance related genetic potentials. The growing demand for scavenging chicken products in urban areas, identification and promotion of ethno-veterinary medicines, developing locally made and appropriate housing structures, selection among the scavenging chickens, organising farmers to increase bargaining power and shortening the marketing chain are considered as the major opportunities for the improvement of scavenging chicken production in Africa. The significance of indigenous chickens for farmers in African countries combined with many consumers’ preference for their eggs and meat suggests that these genetic resources are promising options for food security in the rural communities. Indeed, there is no proficient feed miller unit which can provide high quality feed according to the needs of the farmers. This is due to a lack of information on nutrition and relevant management tools or people trained as poultry farm managers. With the aim to alleviate poverty and hunger in Togo, an inter-university project [Catholic University of Leuven (KUL) and University of Lome (UL)] as a model for poultry development was being run from June 2006 to May 2012. Specific objectives of the project are 1) to provide insights and disseminate guidelines and information on adapted methods to improve poultry production and 2) to focus on development of new technologies in poultry production and implementation of research on better poultry nutrition, feeding and management practices. The global fisheries sector has been characterized by three main trends over the last 2–3 decades; fish stocks have been overexploited and supply from wild fisheries is stagnating; fisheries management has improved slowly with the aims of achieving biological sustainability and rent maximization; and supplies from aquaculture have grown continuously. In this paper, the impact of improved fisheries management on aquaculture growth is studied assuming perfect substitution between farmed and wild fish. We find that improved fisheries management, ceteris paribus, reduces the growth potential of global aquaculture in markets where wild fisheries constitute a large share of total supply. The aim of the model is to help pig managers of multisite systems in making shortterm decisions (mainly related to pig transfers between farms and batch management in fattening units) and mid-term or long-term decisions (according to company targets and expansion Universidade de São Paulo Prefeitura do Campus de Pirassununga Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia - Departamento de Nutrição e Produção Animal Programa de Pós-Graduação em Nutrição e Produção Animal - Laboratório de Análises Socioeconômicas e Ciência Animal 10 strategy). The model skeleton follows the structure of a three-site system that can be adapted to any multisite system present in the modern pig industry. There are three basic phases, namely, piglet production, rearing pigs, and fattening. Each phase involves a different set of farms; therefore, transportation between farms and delivering of pigs to the abattoir are under consideration. The model maximizes the total gross margin calculated from the income of sales to the abattoir and the production costs over the time horizon considered. Production cost depends on each type of farm involved in the process. Parameters like number of farms per phase and distance, farm capacity, reproduction management policies, feeding and veterinary expenses, and transportation costs are taken into account. The model also provides a schedule of transfers between farms in terms of animals to be transported and number of trucks involved. The use of the model is illustrated with a case study based on a real instance of a company located in Catalonia (Spain). as those breeds with few flocks and restricted geographical distribution are at higher risk. This was especially evident for the naturalised breeds. Spatial distribution of breeds was highly correlated with environmental controls and two distinct clusters were found. Spatial distribution of breeds was highly correlated with environmental controls. Naturalised sheep breeds in Brazil tend to be more localized than commercial breeds which may mean they are at greater risk. Hair and wool sheep tend to occur in specific environments. Flocks in the center west and northeast tend to further away from the midpoint for the breed, making germplasm exchange, and therefore avoidance of inbreeding and their conservation, more difficult. The localization of all flocks of purebred sheep (commerical and naturalised, hair and wool) in Brazil was spatialized in ARCGIS along with climatic (Thermal Humidity Index, precipitation, solar radiation, relative humidity) and physical environmental controls (altitude, pasture type). Data were analysed using analysis of variance, logisitic regression and cluster analyses. Distance matrices were constructed using longitude/latitude and those from environmental controls and these were correlated using Mantel test. Santa Ines and Dorper were the most popular breeds with a countrywide distribution. Over 80% of most breeds occurred within 500 km of their midpoint which has implications for their conservation and vulnerability McManus, C.; Hermuche, P.; Paiva, S.R.; Moraes, J.C.F.; Melo, C.B.; Mendes, C. Tail biting is a serious animal welfare and economic problem in pig production. Tail docking, which reduces but does not eliminate tail biting, remains widespread. However, in the EU tail docking may not be used routinely, and some ‘alternative’ forms of pig production and certain countries do not allow tail docking at all. Against this background, using a novel approach focusing on research where tail injuries were quantified, we review the measures that can be used to control tail biting in pigs without tail docking. Using this strict criterion, there was good evidence that manipulable substrates and feeder space affect damaging tail biting. Only epidemiological evidence was available for effects of temperature and season, and the effect of stocking density was unclear. Studies suggest that group size has little effect, and the effects of nutrition, disease and breed require further investigation. The review identifies a number of knowledge gaps and promising avenues for future research into prevention and mitigation. We illustrate the diversity of hypotheses concerning how different proposed risk factors might increase tail biting through their effect on each other or on the proposed underlying processes of tail biting. A quantitative comparison of the efficacy of different Universidade de São Paulo Prefeitura do Campus de Pirassununga Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia - Departamento de Nutrição e Produção Animal Programa de Pós-Graduação em Nutrição e Produção Animal - Laboratório de Análises Socioeconômicas e Ciência Animal 11 methods of provision of manipulable materials, and a review of current practices in countries and assurance schemes where tail docking is banned, both suggest that daily provision of small quantities of destructible, manipulable natural materials can be of considerable benefit. Further comparative research is needed into materials, such as ropes, which are compatible with slatted floors. Also, materials which double as fuel for anaerobic digesters could be utilised. As well as optimising housing and management to reduce risk, it is important to detect and treat tail biting as soon as it occurs. Early warning signs before the first bloody tails appear, such as pigs holding their tails tucked under, could in future be automatically detected using precision livestock farming methods enabling earlier reaction and prevention of tail damage. However, there is a lack of scientific studies on how best to respond to outbreaks: the effectiveness of, for example, removing biters and/or bitten pigs, increasing enrichment, or applying substances to tails should be investigated. Finally, some breeding companies are exploring options for reducing the genetic propensity to tail bite. If these various approaches to reduce tail biting are implemented we propose that the need for tail docking will be reduced. This study aimed to develop a validated scoring system to assess the quality of life of dogs kennelled in rehoming centres. Objective animal-based measures of welfare and quality of life, identified from the scientific literature, were included in the scoring system to indicate negative and positive quality of life. Each item was scored using a binary system to minimise subjectivity in scoring. Dogs were recruited from 13 rehoming centres into four different treatment groups: group NS consisted of dogs that had newly arrived at the shelter and received a standard husbandry routine; group NE consisted of dogs that had newly arrived at the shelter and received an enrichment programme; group LS consisted of dogs that had been in the centre for more than 30 days and received a standard husbandry routine; and group LE consisted of dogs that had been in the shelter for more than 30 days and received an enrichment programme. Inter-observer reliability of each item was established and internal consistency of the entire score was assessed: seven unreliable items were removed and the scoring system was refined. 26.7% (ICC1 = 0.267) of the variation in quality of life scores was explained by rehoming centre group membership, and rehoming centre groups could reliably be differentiated in terms of quality of life scores (ICC2 = 0.832). Therefore, quality of life scores varied between rehoming centres but other factors must exist to explain the remaining 73.3% of the variation in quality of life scores. The addition of an enrichment programme and later recruitment onto the study increased quality of life scores by 0.035 ± 0.027 (SE) and 0.086 ± 0.027 (SE), respectively. These increases represent an 8.27% and a 20.33% improvement on the overall (across all treatment groups) mean QoL score (0.423). Evidence of good content, construct and criterion validity was established, however, internal consistency was found to be poor, indicating that the reliability of the score could be improved. Tameness may have reduced the stress of living in human proximity and improved welfare in captivity. We selected Red Junglefowl (ancestors of all domestic chickens) for four generations on high or low fear towards humans, mimicking an important aspect of the earliest period of domestication, and tested birds from the third and fourth generation in three different social tests. Growth and plumage Universidade de São Paulo Prefeitura do Campus de Pirassununga Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia - Departamento de Nutrição e Produção Animal Programa de Pós-Graduação em Nutrição e Produção Animal - Laboratório de Análises Socioeconômicas e Ciência Animal 12 condition, as well as size of eggs and offspring were also recorded, as indicators of some aspects of welfare. Birds selected for low fear had higher weight, laid larger eggs and generated larger offspring, and had a better plumage condition. In a social dominance test they also performed more aggressive behaviour and received less of the same, regardless of whether the restricted resource was feed or not. Hence, dominance appeared to increase as a consequence of reduced fear of humans. Furthermore, egg size and the weight of the offspring were larger in the less fearful birds, and plumage condition better, which could be interpreted as the less fearful animals being better adapted to the environment in which they were selected. the time rabbits spent eating (8.30% vs. 6.55%), self-grooming (6.39% vs. 5.47%) and time spent resting (81.1% vs. 84.1%). In conclusion, rabbits housed in collective pens displayed a more complete behavioural pattern, despite resting more; they were more bold toward humans, but more fearful in a new environment than rabbits from cages. In the tested conditions, pen size and stocking density within collective systems exerted only a weak effect on behaviour, fear and stress levels of meat rabbits. The effect of pen size (small vs. large) and stocking density (12 vs. 16 rabbits/m2) in collective pens was also evaluated. The rabbits kept in collective pens rested more than those in bicellular cages (82.1% vs. 77.6% of observed time; P<0.01), spent less time feeding (7.8% vs. 10.9%), allo-grooming (0.65% vs. 1.58%) and more time moving (0.81% vs. 0.35%) (P<0.01). The percentage of rabbits sensitive in the tonic immobility test was lower in rabbits kept collectively compared to those in bicellular cages (76.6% vs. 93.8%; P=0.03). In the open field test, the rabbits kept in collective pens moved less (40.4 s vs. 57.2 s; P<0.001) and explored the arena for a shorter time (345 s vs. 371 s; P<0.001) than rabbits housed in bicellular cages; instead, these rabbits stood still for a longer period of time (82.1 s vs. 38.7 s; P<0.001). The rabbits kept in collective pens displayed a higher hair corticosterone level (15.7 ng/g vs. 6.7 ng/g for rabbits from the cages; P<0.001). Within collective housing systems, stocking density had no effect whereas increasing pen size numerically reduced Trocino, A.; Filiou, E.; Tazzoli, M.; Bertotto, D.; Negrato, E.; Xiccato, G. TIME-BUDGET CONSTRAINTS FOR COWS WITH HIGH MILKING FREQUENCY ON FARMS WITH AUTOMATIC MILKING SYSTEMS Adequate lying times and feed consumption are essential for the welfare and performance of dairy cows. The time budget of cows housed in barns with an automatic milking system (AMS) might be constrained in several ways. Cows with a high milking frequency might also have to visit the AMS at night, possibly interfering with their night-time lying behavior. Moreover, competition for access to the AMS might cause some cows to spend more time waiting in front of the milking unit, resulting in a lower milking frequency. In the present study, the individual total duration of stay and time spent per visit in the feeding, lying and waiting area, as well as lying behavior, was therefore investigated in the daytime and throughout the night in relation to milking frequency. A total of 138 focal cows (day of lactation: 1–200) housed on 4 Swiss working farms with an AMS were automatically tracked for 48 h. Individual lying times were recorded over 7 days with data loggers. The daily milking frequency was calculated from the AMS records and included as a continuous explanatory variable in linear mixedeffects models. Time spent in the waiting area at night increased with increasing milking frequency. In addition, cows with a relatively high milking frequency had shorter daytime lying bouts, and spent less time in the lying area per visit during the daytime as well as at night. The same individuals also visited the feeding area for shorter times during the day, and on average remained longer per visit in the waiting area at night. The daily time budget of cows with a relatively low milking frequency was not adversely Universidade de São Paulo Prefeitura do Campus de Pirassununga Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia - Departamento de Nutrição e Produção Animal Programa de Pós-Graduação em Nutrição e Produção Animal - Laboratório de Análises Socioeconômicas e Ciência Animal 13 affected. Cows with a relatively high milking frequency may face some trade-offs in their timebudget allocation, since the increased time spent by them in the waiting area at night as well as their shorter lying bouts might affect their welfare, health and performance. Nevertheless, the overall daily time budget for lying and feeding, and hence the welfare of cows with both a relatively high or low milking frequency, suffered no obvious adverse effects. Therefore poultry producers are continuously looking for new and innovative tools to apply in poultry production in order to economise rearing costs and save rising energy concerns. Changes in the light regimen, intensity, duration and wavelength have a profound effect on the behaviour, physiology and production performance of poultry. Moreover, bird welfare is a major controversial issue and the adaptation of a lighting programme with a proper lighting tool could impart a possible solution for the betterment of poultry welfare. Light emitting diodes (LED), due to their various beneficial characteristics over traditional incandescent and fluorescent bulbs; are gaining popularity with poultry farmers. Therefore, it can be suggested that the use of LED in poultry housing is advantageous due to its energy efficiency and long life as compared to the conventional light sources, and with the added benefit of its various colours and higher productivity. Eighty male New Zealand White rabbits were divided into two groups of 40 animals and subjected to either halal slaughter without stunning (HS) or gas stunning using 61.4% CO2, 20.3% oxygen and 18.3 % nitrogen (GS). Analysis of the sticking blood revealed that both slaughter procedures caused a substantial increase in the levels of catecholamines, hypercalcemia, hyperglycemia, lactic acidemia and an increase in enzyme activities. The ultimate pH of the Longissimus lumborum muscle did not differ between treatments. GS exhibited higher lightness and cooking loss, and lower glycogen and MFI than HS. This indicates that both GS and HS can be significant stressors although the amount of stress may be below the threshold to negatively affect rabbit meat quality. Justification for tail docking in these management systems is to reduce tail injuries and their sequelae and improve performance, but limited evidence exists to support these claims. The primary objective of this study was to determine the effect of tail docking on performance, carcass traits, and health parameters after tail docking in feedlot cattle raised in slatted-floor feedlots. Three separate trials were performed. Trial 1 consisted of 140 Angus-cross (370-kg) yearling steers that spent 144 to 160 days on feed (DOF). Trial 2 consisted of 137 Angus-cross (255-kg) weaned steers that spent 232 DOF. Trial 3 consisted of 102 Holstein steers (370 kg) that spent 185 to 232 DOF. All steers received an epidural following surgical preparation of the sacrococcygeal area and postoperative intravenous flunixin meglumine. Approximately two-thirds of the tail of DK calves was removed and an elastrator band was placed near the tail tip for hemostasis. Performance parameters collected included daily gain, final weight, feed intake, and feed efficiency. Carcass data included HCW, subcutaneous fat thickness, LM area, KPH percent, marbling, USDA yield grade, and USDA quality grade. Morbidity, mortality, incidence of lameness, and incidence of tail lesions were recorded. Across all 3 trials, there was no significant effect (P < 0.05) of treatment on performance parameters, carcass traits, or health parameters. In all 3 trials, tail tip injuries occurred in 60 to 76% of undocked (CN) calves, developed while living in the slatted-floor environment, compared to 100% of DK calves, whose injuries were a result of the tail docking procedure. We were unable to identify a performance or significant health advantage to tail docking. However, tail tip injuries still occur in cattle raised in slatted-floor facilities. Because of the animal welfare issues associated with tail docking and tail injuries, we recommend pursuing alternative solutions to reducing the incidence of tail tip injury in feedlot cattle housed in confined slatted-floor facilities. Silva, M.G.; Dias, M.M.; Silva, S.P. This study examined collaborative arrangements between intensive livestock farms in Denmark with surplus manure and farms requiring crop nutrients, in order to manage the manure resource at landscape scale and comply with environmental regulations. The extent of collaborative arrangements for manure among Danish farms was explored at national scale using registry data. This showed that in 2009, 50% of all farms in Denmark, managing 70% of the area, were involved in manure exchange, indicating that collaborative arrangements are widespread. Based on this analysis, a sample of 1500 livestock farmers who had provided manure to others was selected for a survey to determine the nature of the manure arrangements in terms of which farmers make partnerships with, and how the arrangements function in practice. Multivariate analysis (multiple correspondence analysis and cluster analysis) of 644 respondents was used to identify specific types of manure partnerships. The vast majority of respondents knew their partner before they established the arrangement, either through family, neighbours or their local or professional network. These different social relations played an important role in defining four types of partnerships, differing in e.g. burden sharing of manure transportation and spreading, frequency of communication and transport distance. The four types identified provide additional information about decision-making on manure allocation, which to date is mainly based on spatial-economic models. Asai, M.; Langer, V.; Frederiksen, P. Information on incidences of camel (Camelus dromedarius) and their population current status in Palestine is so scarce. This survey aims at investigating the Palestinian camel’s current status, and constraints of camel’s population in the West bank Governorates. The survey also tackles the productivity and production status, camel production constraints; marketing constraints and the major camel diseases were also discussed. The gaps in camel veterinary services were another target for this survey. A total of 35 households were interviewed on the significance of the dromedary camel and constraints associated to camel raising, production in the area using a single-visit-multiple-subject approach along with a semi-structured questionnaire. Our finding showed that the interviewed households owned camels for milk and meat production purposes. The major contributions rendered by dromedary camels keeping in our study were meat production first, then milk production and finally the transportation, while the major constraints associated with camel production in the area were pastureland shrinking and subsequently the shortage of natural green feed. Camels in the West Bank Governorates areas feed mainly on poor-quality perennial natural vegetation of low nutritive value. Camels were given supplementary feed such as the dried hey, barley, and other remaining of crop harvests. The second major constraint was the absence of veterinary services and the prevalence of disease. The living Camels’ and their products including milk are marketed from primary markets or pastoralists directly. In a few cases milk and almost all slaughtered camel meat are immediately sold in butchers’ shop or abattoirs terminal butchers and markets. Camels are very rare used as working animals. Most of the time camels are reconditioned to gain body weight at various transaction points for a year or more before they are sold again. Because of larger capital requirements, small traders are not able to hold bulk more than 50 camels at most at a time, when compared to cattle, goats and sheep traders who usually bulk hundreds of cattle or thousands of goats and sheep.
