Slover Jr. Dana Wilkinson Mission Statement The Figge Art Museum actively serves the public by promoting appreciation and creation of visual art through education, and by collecting, conserving and exhibiting art. As a vital, responsive institution, the Museum brings art and people together, expands the knowledge and love of art, and enriches the life of the community through the power of art. Steve Sinner, local artist and Figge donor, leads a Thursdays at the Figge Art Talk in the exhibition, Branching Out: The Art of Wood, in which included a piece of his work. 2 Letter from The Director Dear museum supporter: Executive Director Sean O’Harrow stands before a work of Haitian art in the Figge collection. In January 2010, the Figge aided in the Haitian earthquake efforts by donating admission revenues to the Red Cross. The past 12 months have proven to be a significant year for the Figge Art Museum, and its supporters and the public. The museum celebrated its fifth anniversary during the country’s worst recession since the 1930s. At the same time, the Figge has seen its finest year ever by setting a number of records for public attendance and participation. In FY2009-2010, the museum saw an overall total of 69,187 people enter its doors and/or participate in its programs. This is 8.43% more people than last year, and the most ever recorded in the history of the museum. This is also over 10% more than the total combined attendance for the museum and the restaurant in the first full year that our facility opened (an important milestone because so many people visited the museum and participated in programs during our first year, and we have always aimed to outperform this initial success). One measure of the effectiveness and popularity of our programs and exhibitions is the attendance of our members. This year saw a massive jump in the number of members choosing to visit on repeated occasions; the museum recorded 4,973 member visits, which is over 46% more than last year’s total. And as everyone in business knows, a loyal customer base is the secret to a successful organization! This year, we experienced an enormous amount of success with our community initiatives. Almost 13,000 elementary and secondary school students took part in our outreach programs during the academic year that coincided with our financial year. This is over 18% more than our last year’s record number served, and multiples of what it had been in prior years. This is evidence that what we are providing the public, and in this case our schoolchildren, is relevant to our community’s educational needs. 3 Now, all of this success needs to be backed up with sound financial management, and I would like to inform you that this has indeed been the case. For another year running, the museum performed very well financially. In FY2009-2010, we essentially broke even. This is always the aim of a non-profit and what makes running such an organization so challenging. The goal always must be to maximize resources by offering the most possible to the public and break even in the process (hence the term “non-profit”). For this most recent year, we managed to offer more and better programming, increase our attendance across the board, set records in all categories, balance the budget and at the same time, reduce our adjusted operating expenditure by 1.9% on the previous year. This is nothing short of miraculous, particularly considering the horrendous financial climate that resulted in reduced programming and public services at peer institutions across the country. I would like to conclude this report by saying I am proud of the performance of the Figge during the most recent financial year, a period that has proven so damaging to many communities around the world, and I credit this success to the Herculean efforts put in by its staff, its board of directors and its supporters. Without these people, the residents and visitors in our region would not be able to experience the great cultural and educational offerings provided by the Figge Art Museum, and so on behalf of the institution, I would like to thank everyone for their generous support and for making all of this possible. Sean O’Harrow, PhD Executive Dirrector Community Support The Figge Art Museum gratefully acknowledges the many individuals and organizations whose contributions supported our exhibitions, events, programs and publications during the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2010. During the course of his sixty-year career as an artist, Bloom produced a considerable body of work ranging from large murals to intimate studies, sculptures carved in wood to lithographic prints and easel paintings. His interest in depicting local, American subject matter reflects his life-long commitment to Regionalism, a movement popular during the Great Depression. As an artist who experienced the economic turmoil of the first half of the twentieth century, it comes as no great surprise that work features prominently throughout Bloom’s career. This exhibition offered a glimpse into the lives of working men and women in rural small-town America during the late 1920s through the early 1940s. Curator of Education Ann Marie Hayes-Hawkinson introduces artist Arthur Geisert at Thursdays at the Figge “College Night” on February 25, 2010. Geisert spoke about his work in the exhibition Visions of Iowa: Arthur Geisert Country Road ABC. Paper Trail: A Decade of Exhibitions from the Walker Art Center July 18, 2009-January 3, 2010 Branching Out: the Art of Wood October 10, 2009-February 14, 2010 The transformation of gnarled and twisted logs, roots and burls into vessels of great elegance and refinement demands a level of skill and artistry that for much of the twentieth century was undervalued and underappreciated. Denigrated for their utilitarian function wood-turned vessels were regarded as objects suitable for everyday use rather than works of art. In the past three decades, however, the field of wood art has experienced a dramatic revival. Artists have supplemented the traditional technique of lathe turning by radically altering and modifying surfaces. These range from carving motifs in relief, to applying concealing finishes, such as paint, gold leaf or beading, incorporating inlay into the structure to burning and sandblasting the wood for textural effects. Products of the creativity and skills of the artist, the works in this exhibition celebrated the beauty of wood and challenged our perceptions of art and art-making. In the Footsteps of Masters (UIMA) January 23, 2010-May 23, 2010 11 Exhibitions Visions of Iowa: Arthur Geisert Country Road ABC February 27, 2010-June 6, 2010 This exhibition featured Arthur Geisert’s illustrations from his upcoming ABC book entitled Country Road ABC. A master etcher, Arthur Geisert has produced twenty-two books, many of which have been recognized by the national press and exhibited at numerous museums including the Art Institute of Chicago and Cedar Rapids Museum of Art. Inspired by the inhabitants of a small and isolated farming community of Bernard Iowa, Geisert’s latest project offered an intimate and vivid glimpse into the lives of Midwestern farmers during a year’s cycle in farming. Local inhabitants participated in the project by critiquing the images and providing detailed and accurate descriptions of farming equipment and practices. The exhibition provided the Figge with a unique opportunity to introduce a younger audience to the process of creating a book and the traditional techniques, such as etching, required to illustrate it. Highlights of the 2010 operating year include: •Increase in admission and membership revenue of 13% over prior year. •Revenue generated from store sales and facility rentals continues to gain momentum, up over 50% from the prior year. •Revenue generated from contribution sources, i.e., grants, sponsorships, and other donations was at the previous year’s level; this is very positive given the difficult fund raising environment. •Expenses, excluding the impact of our cost sharing arrangement with the University of Iowa, rose a modest 3% from the prior year. This was mainly a result of having all vacant positions filled. The Museum’s ability to raise and earn revenues in amounts sufficient to cover operating expenses will continue to be a challenge in the coming years. As the Museum plans for its future, successfully accomplishing its goals will depend on its ability to raise funds. Key initiatives in meeting this challenge will be expanding the visitor experience, growing the Member and donor base, and building a larger endowment.
