Gebietes Mesola mit seinen wichtigsten Merkmalen, darunter den Wald Gran Bosco della Mesola und seinem Dünenhirschen, dem Cervo delle Dune. Der erste
Saal stellt die Beziehung zwischen der „Delizia Estense“ und ihrem Gebiet dar. Der
Besucher entdeckt anschließend (Saal 2) eine Sammlung von Nachdrucken aus
dem Herbarium von Filippo De Pisis, einem berühmten Maler aus Ferrara des 20.
Jahrhunderts. Der dritte Saal entwickelt das Thema der Fauna und Flora während
der vier Jahreszeiten in Gran Bosco della Mesola, wobei die Steineiche im Mittelpunkt steht. Im weiteren Verlauf des Rundgangs

Castello di Mesola
Work began on the construction of the Mesola Castle in 1578, by the will of Alfonso II, the last Duke of Este,
who wanted to leave his mark by building a luxurious court residence, or delizia, equal in size and magnificence
to the older Estense Castle in Ferrara. Halfway between a fortress and a luxury villa, Mesola Castle is circumscribed by nine miles of fortified walls and features four imposing towers, crenellated walls and large windows.
It still stands today in a landscape characterized by the River Po, surrounded by a halo of octagonal porticoes.
At the height of its splendour, the entire façade of the castle was decorated with frescoes and coloured glazed
ceramic. It was designed to be the fulcrum of a Renaissance city constructed to oppose the dominion of Venice
over the Adriatic, but the ambitious plan failed when Alfonso II died without heirs in 1597.
Die Errichtung vom Schloss von Mesola begann im Jahr 1578 auf Wunsch von Alfonso II, des letzten Herzogs von Este. Dieser

Größe der ältesten Estenser Burg in Ferrara gleichkam. Neun Meilen Ringmauer, vier mächtige Türme, Mauern mit Zinnen,
große Fenster und ein Bauwerk halb Festung halb Prunkwohnsitz: umgegeben von einem Kranz aus achteckigen Arkaden hebt
sich noch heute das Schloss von Mesola in einer Landschaft ab, die vom Fluss Po charakterisiert ist. Auf dem Höhepunkt seines
Glanzes zeigte sich das Schloss mit Freskendekor auf der gesamten Fassade und einem mehrfarbigen Keramikkranz mit Glaseinsätzen. Das Schloss sollte das Zentrum einer Renaissancestadt werden, welche die Macht von Venedig an der Adria brechen
sollte. Doch das ehrgeizige Vorhaben scheiterte, als Alfonso II im Jahr 1597 ohne Erben starb.

Several architectural constructions across the region bear witness to the
great land reclamations undertaken from the Este era to the present day.

Torre Abate
Built in the 16th Century, this construction is characterized by five basins,
over which rests a concave building with a rectangular floorplan. The flow
of water was originally controlled by a system of locks conceived by Leonardo da Vinci, but it fell into disuse in 1604 when the Porto Viro canal was
dug by the Venetians to protect their lagoon.

Datable to the first half of the 18th Century, it was built to drain the Canal Bianco into the sea and prevent the backflow of seawater at high tide. From the banks you can enjoy an excellent view of the small sandy islands and the mouth of the Po di Volano.

The Gran Bosco della Mesola nature reserve, with its 1058
hectares, represents one of the last and best conserved
woods on the plains, a reminder of the ancient forests that
once extended along the Adriatic coast. Presumably originating in the Middle Ages on the delta dunes formed by the
branches of the Po di Goro and the Po di Volano, today it is
the most extensive wooded area around Ferrara.
Das Naturschutzgebiet Gran Bosco della Mesola stellt mit
seinen 1058 Hektaren einen der letzten und am besten erhaltenen Wälder in der Ebene dar und erinnert die alten Wälder,
die sich einst entlang der Adriaküste erstreckten. Der Wald

deer, badgers, foxes, waterfowl, herons, ducks, woodpeckers,
bee-eaters, birds of prey, amphibians and many species of
invertebrates are also present.

Near the small town of Santa Giustina you can find the
wood of the same name, the eastern-most survivors of the
Este’s Mesola estate. Today you are free to roam around by
bike or on foot.

The dunes are a complex of sandy banks formed between the end of the Bronze
Age (10th century BC) and the beginning of the Iron Age. They bear witness to the
position of the ancient coastline of the Adriatic Sea. Look in at the small Visitors
Centre and take a guided tour, which is also suitable for the visually impaired.

The Po Delta Park, with its numerous visitors centres, is an extraordinary jigsaw of natural wonders. It is divided into “Stations”, areas
characterized by a specific landscape, and natural, artistic and cultural features. Mesola is situated in Station 1, along with Volano and Goro.

In the fertile, sandy and water-rich lands at the mouth of the
Po, roughly 40% of the asparagus produced in the Emilia-Romagna region is grown. With its refined and much sought–after flavour, asparagus is nutritionally richer in fibre than other
vegetables, it is also rich in vital minerals and contains limited
quantities of fats, protein and sugars. In addition to asparagus,
among the typical products of this region are carrot, radicchio,
butternut squash, Ferrarese watermelon, black and white (bianchetto) truffles and mushrooms.
Auf den fruchtbaren, sandigen und wasserreichen Böden der
Po-Mündung konzentrieren sich zirka 40% der Spargelproduktion der Emilia-Romagna. Dank seinem feinen Geschmack ist er
in der Küche sehr begehrt. Aus ernährungswissenschaftlicher
Sicht ist der Spargel reicher an Ballaststoffen als andere Gemüse und ist außerdem arm an Fetten, Proteinen und Zucker. Die

• 320 g Carnaroli rice
• 20 green Mesola asparagus
• 1 shallot
• 100 ml of white wine
• meat stock
• 1 knob of butter
• 40 g grated
Grana Padano cheese
• salt and pepper to taste

Instructions Ausführung:

Gently fry the shallot, add a little white wine and evaporate. Wash, peel and cut the asparagus into small pieces
and add them to the shallot; season and par-fry.
Schalotte anrösten, etwas Wein hinzufügen und verdunsten lassen. Spargel waschen, trockenen, schälen, in kleine
Stücke schneiden und zur Schalotte hinzufügen. Salzen,
pfeffern und bei mittlerer Hitze garen.
2 Add the rice, toast for a few minutes and add the rest of
the white wine; once the wine has evaporated, add the
(previously prepared) meat stock, a little at a time.
Reis hinzufügen, einige Minuten anrösten lassen und mit

zubereitete) Fleischbrühe hinzugeben und garen lassen.

Turn off the heat and stir in the butter and cheese. Leave
to rest for a few minutes before serving.

The D.O.C. Bosco Eliceo Wines, the Wines of the Sands, are produced from
grapes grown on sandy banks among the holm oak woods in a particularly
humid and salty environment.

In the spring, between April and May, the renowned annual Mesola Asparagus Fair is held,
queen of the local fairs. At the stalls surrounding the Castle you can taste not only the IGP-certified
green asparagus, but also other products from the delta, including the wines of the sands, strawberries,
rice and butternut squash, in addition to excellent quality cured meats and cheeses. The fair extends
through all the streets of the town, which also plays host to itinerant shows, fireworks and guided tours
of the area. The asparagus is the star attraction on the menu in the local restaurants and food stalls.

Across the SS 309 Romea State Highway in front of the Abbey,
the cycle path leads to Pontemaodino. Continue on past Italba
and the fossil dunes at Massenzatica to the FE20 Destra Po
route, which will take you back towards the Estense Castle.

The Benedictine settlement,
founded between the 6th and 7th
Centuries, is located on a wooded island between two branches
of the river, and from the 11th Century, protected by
the sea, it became a flourishing monastic centre. In the
basilica you can admire frescoes of the Giotto school
and a superb mosaic floor.

From the Castle take the via Biverare around Santa Giustina Wood. After the town of the same name, you will come
across the beautiful Torre Abate and its lake. Head towards
the Great Mesola Wood. Tours available. Reclaimed lands,
drainage canals and tree-lined avenues surround the magnificent Pomposa Abbey.
Von der Burg aus fährt man die Via Biverare, entlang dem Wald
von Santa Giustina. Vom gleichnamigen Ort aus geht es zum
pittoresken Torre Abate mit seinem kleinen See; von dort fährt
man weiter Richtung Gran Bosco della Mesola. Möglichkeit zur
Besichtigung desselben. Trockengelegte Böden, Ablaufkanäle und
Alleen umgeben die prächtige Abtei von Pomposa.

Detour: at Gorino there is a pontoon bridge over the
Po di Goro that leads to Gorino Veneto. From here you can
proceed to Chioggia-Venezia, crossing the Venetian Delta.

From the Estense Castle at Mesola, the route follows the
longest cycle path in Italy, the Destra Po: 120 km from
Stellata di Bondeno to the sea, along the right-hand bank of
the Po river. It follows the Po di Goro, first towards the north,
and then southwards for over 10 km in the Po Delta Park.
The cycle path passes first through the town of Goro, which
faces the Sacca di Goro, home to tasty clams and mussels,
then the village of Gorino, the last strip of the Delta, where
boat trips to the lighthouse can be taken.
Vom Estenser Schloss von Mesola folgt die Rundfahrt einem der
längsten Radwege Italiens, dem Destra Po: 120 km von Stellata di
Bondeno bis zum Meer, den rechten Damm des Flusses Po entlang.
Man folgt zunächst dem Po von Goro Richtung Norden, anschließend fährt man für mehr als 10 km nach Süden im Po-Delta-Park.
Der Radweg führt zunächst zur Ortschaft Goro, die entlang der
gleichnamigen Bucht liegt; die Bucht von Goro ist für die schmackhaften Venusmuscheln und Miesmuscheln berühmt. Weiter geht es
dann durch den Ortsteil Gorino, der letzten Landzunge des Deltas,
von der die Boote für die Ausflüge bis nach Faro ablegen.

From spring to late autumn numerous motorboats depart from
the ports of Goro and Gorino Ferrarese, following extremely evocative itineraries along the Po di Goro river to the Isola dell'Amore
and the nature reserves around the Goro lighthouse, or out to sea
in fishing boats, where you can experience fishing and cooking the
catch aboard. The boats weave their way through the reed bed at
the mouth of the Po di Volano until the Sacca di Goro, and also
along the Po di Venezia and Po di Maistra in the Venice region and
the Comacchio Lagoons.
Vom Frühling bis lange in den Herbst legen von den Häfen Goro und
Gorino Ferrarese zahlreiche Motorboote ab, die den äußerst faszinierenden Wegen entlang dem Po von Goro bis zur Isola dell'Amore und zu den

Birdwatching
The Po Delta is home to large populations of birds, including many
rare and threatened species who find refuge here on the migration
routes from Europe, the Mediterranean and Africa. Birdwatching is
possible here in every season, but spring and autumn are undoubtedly
the best times, due to the amount of different species be seen.
